The Two Sides
Over the next few weeks:
NEED
Analyze the north and the South's strength and weaknesses
in fighting the civil war. Why?
LEARN
You will learn through reading, guiding notes and class
discussions.
DEVELOP
APPLY
EVALUATE
You will develop your learning through creating maps, writing
activity that personifies a border state.
You will apply your new knowledge by creating a series
of graphs labeling the resources of the North and the
South.
You will be evaluated through your work, participation
and quiz at the end of the section.
The Two Sides
To understand the conflict leading to the civil war, you need CONTEXT.
School = Federal
Government (USA!)
Classroom=State
Government
=
=
In my classroom, I set the rules!
In a school the Administrators set the rules!
What happens when you go to another class?
When you are at lunch or outside of the
classroom do you listen to classroom rules or
school rules?
Example: If you live in the United States of
America you have freedom of speech. It is a
federal law that all states have to listen to and
abide by.
Whose rules do you follow, mine, or that teacher?
Each state has different laws and if you are in that
state, you must obey them.
Example, in Arizona it is legal to have a loaded
firearm in the car. In California however, that is
AGAINST the law without a special permit.
However, what happens if the principal comes in and says
something different? Who do you listen to? Why?
The Two Sides
Let’s make a map!
Maps should include:
Union States
Confederate States
Mississippi River
Border States
Compass Rose
Capital Cities
Topic: Road to Civil War
Essential Question:
Dividing Factors
Politics, economics, culture divided the north and south
Industrialization
The process in which a country changes from farming to manufacturing (factories)
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln wins the election as the leader of a new political party-The
Republican Party. Against slavery.
Secede
1861-Seven states left the Union and formed the Confederacy. Virginia, North Carolina,
Tennessee and Arkansas. Capital- Richmond, VA.
Union
Border states Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware stayed in the Union. Very
important because of their location.
Key Locations
Missouri controlled parts of the Mississippi River. Kentucky controlled Ohio River.
Maryland had important railroad lines.
Border state
Lincoln had to be careful in what he said so he would not upset the border
states. He needed the border states to remain in the Union.
North Advantages
larger population, more industry, more resources, better banking system, more
ships, strong Union Navy, larger railroad system, Abraham Lincoln.
North Disadvantages
To get the south back to the Union and invasion must occur, many believed the south
had a good chance.
Topic: Road to Civil War
Essential Question:What caused the United States to go into a Civil War?
South Advantages
white population supported the south, troops fighting on their own land,
superior leadership- Robert E. Lee.
South Disadvantages
small population, few factories, fewer resources including the railroad.
North’s Goal
Wanted to bring the southern states back then end slavery. They would do this by:
Blockade in the south, gain control of the Mississippi River, and capture the
Confederate Capital.
South’s Goal
Wanted recognition as an independent nation to continue slavery. They would do this
by: holding on to as much territory as they could, have Britain and France put pressure
on the North to end the war, threatened the lands surrounding DC.
America at War
Americans fought other Americans
Most soldiers were farmers- average age was 25
Confederate Army (Rebels) 112,000 soldiers
Union Army (yankees) 187,000 soldiers
Both predicted the war would end quickly.
Describe how the United States went to war with itself. 5-7 sentences
