THE YEAR OF FAITH 11 OCTOBER, 2012—24 NOVEMBER, 2013 FIRST HOLY COMMUNION AND THE SPIRITUAL LIFE First Holy Communion will be celebrated throughout our parish churches this weekend. We wish the children well and their families and friends, especially those who will be with them in church. Unfortunately for some, it will be their first communion and their last communion, unless they attend a Catholic wedding or funeral or attend Easter or Christmas services. But why do people stop practising going to church on a Sunday, especially those parents who have put so much into preparing their children for their first Holy Communion? I feel it is something to do with us adults, parents, deacons and priests, for within us we believe in magic. The magic that when a child is christened, receives its first communion and confirmation and that, having received the sacraments, a process of spiritual osmosis will take place. The child will magically become a follower of Christ and have the scriptures and Church’s teachings to guide it throughout its life until it comes to its end. I am afraid this magic is for magicians and has no place in this spiritual life. Many think that to live this spiritual life means that it requires severe forms of asceticism and long hours of prayer. Not so, the spiritual life can be lived in as many ways as there are people. However, if we try and live our lives on a spiritual foundation we gradually notice that the cares and worries of this world will have less and less power over us because our hearts will be changing and that is called “a conversion”. This conversion may be marked by a sudden change in being “God conscious”, or it can take place through a long, quiet process of transformation (practising the faith). But it always involves an inner experience of oneness. We realise that we are in the centre, and that from there all that is and all that takes place can be seen and understood as part of the mystery of God's life within us. We will notice a liberation from our conflicts and pains, our tasks and promises, our families and friends, our activities and projects, our hopes and aspirations. That Spirit is going to feed us today in Holy Communion and if we have the courage to explore our faith we will know that what has been Blessed and Broken today and every day is the very centre and reason for living. Enjoy the journey, I hope I meet you on the way. Fr George Liturgies/Masses THIS WEEK’S READINGS: Luke 10:1-12.17.20. Isaiah 66:10-14. Psalm 65. Galatians 6:14-18. NEXT WEEK’S READINGS: Luke 10:25-37. Deuteronomy 30:10-14. Psalm 68. Colossians 1:15-20. Please read the Gospel during the week and listen as it is proclaimed on Sunday. NEXT WEEK IS SEA SUNDAY, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. The Apostleship of the Sea reaches out to seafarers visiting our ports, offering pastoral and practical support and care. AoS is wholly dependent on voluntary donations to continue its work of bringing the love of Christ to seafarers in the name of the Church, recognising them as our brothers and sisters in need. Sea Sunday is your chance to help AoS make a real difference to the lives of seafarers. Everything AoS does is on behalf of Britain’s Catholic community. The parish will take up a second collection on Sea Sunday for the work of AoS—so please give generously. Its ministry cannot continue without your support. For more information on the work of AoS please visit their website at www.apostleshipofthesea.org.uk Sacrament of Baptism Application forms for parents seeking the Sacrament of Baptism for their child are available at the Parish Office at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 191/193 Winchester Road, Chandler’s Ford, SO53 2DU, or phone 023 8027 3882 (Tuesdays to Fridays).
