Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends, Milestone anniversaries make reminiscing irresistible. For 25 years, Chicago Children’s Museum has built a community where play and learning connect. As we plan for the future, we certainly have many reasons to be proud. Serving over 750,000 visitors a year, Chicago Children’s Museum is one of the city’s most popular cultural institutions, a long journey from the 27,000 visitors we served in our first year. By looking at our past, you can see the foundations of today’s museum. Elements of the 1980s-era exhibit Amazing Chicago, a mini-metropolis, can be seen in Kids Town and our new Skyline exhibit. The beloved Recycle Arts Center closed long ago, but its spirit is felt in Kraft Artabounds Studio workshops and numerous drop-in programs. Programs such as Neighborhood Festivals, School Visits, and Free Family Night have been with us for decades and show no signs of slowing down. These changes make it clear that our history is one of growth, from a small space in the Chicago Cultural Center (then the main library), to Lincoln Park, to North Pier, and our current home on Navy Pier. We recently embarked on a new journey, toward the creation of a brand new, world-class museum in the heart of downtown Chicago. Building on our mission, vision, and experiences, the new museum will reflect what is most beloved and magical about childhood, while incorporating the most up-to-date research on the fundamental links between play and learning. In June, we were thrilled to gain City Council approval for our plans. Chicago Children’s Museum has grown over the last 25 years due to the incredible support of our visitors, partners, donors, and staff. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into our past, present, and future, and, as always, we thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Gigi Pritzker Pucker Chair, Board of Directors Jennifer Farrington President and CEO © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E. Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 1 CHANGING EXHIBITS 25 Years Ago In 1982, Express-Ways Children’s Museum opened at the Chicago Public Library with a staff of six people and Getting to Know Hue, an exhibit exploring color, light, literature, and music. Shades of Getting to Know Hue can be seen in CCM’s exhibits to this day. Developing our own exhibits and experiences is one of the best ways to showcase how educational theory and philosophical frameworks can be transformed into fun. Block Party, one of our favorite changing exhibits, was designed with the tenets of the ReggioEmilia approach to early childhood education in mind. A variety of tactile experiences and creative role-playing opportunities provide plenty of inspiration for children to role-play both alone and with other children. Of course, the kids don’t really care about theory and frameworks. They’re just thrilled to once again be in charge of their own pint-sized festival. They serve up ice cream cones, dance on stage, and create meals with such exotic ingredients as felt and cardboard. All of this happens while they learn math, spatial, and social skills. Traveling exhibits are another way to expose visitors to new experiences and ideas. This year, Chicago Children’s Museum was the only place in Chicago where kids could explore and practice math and reading skills with everyone’s favorite monkey, Curious George, and the popular How People Make Things exhibit gave kids a chance to use real tools and machines to create everyday objects. Curious George was sponsored by the Sprint Foundation. © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E. Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 2 PERMANENT EXHIBITS 3 Years Ago In 2005, we released Standards of Excellence in Early Learning, a two-year study of best practices in early childhood programming and exhibits. The study helped to solidify our belief that for young children, learning is a social activity, in which the whole family can be a powerful influence. This philosophy can be seen in exhibits such as Block Party and Tot Lot. Part of our popular Kids Town exhibit, Tot Lot allows pre-walkers to interact with older children while exploring a sensory environment designed just for them. Not incidentally, Tot Lot allows families with children at different stages to stay together, while each child engages in age-appropriate activities. Almost 60% of families visiting Chicago Children’s Museum have at least one child five or under. This year, we cut the ribbon on Skyline. Literally building on years of successful exhibits, from Amazing Chicago to Under Construction, Skyline inspires even the youngest architects and engineers. In Skyscraper Challenge, families can build a skyscraper together and then relive the experience online at home. The Construction Zone encourages children to build objects from chairs to houses, and in the Trump Tower Time Lapse, visitors can see Chicago’s newest skyscraper go up before their eyes. In addition to helping kids see connections between their work and the science of building, Skyline allows caregivers to view and reflect on the learning process as it happens. Skyline was created with a prestigious National Science Foundation grant and is supported by Case Construction, a brand of CNH, part of the Fiat Group. © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E. Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 3 DEVELOPING COMMUNITY 3 Years Ago In 2005, we published our first book, The Skin You Live In, by Michael Tyler and David Lee Csicsko. This vibrant picture book explores race and identity in an engaging, age-appropriate way for young children. With almost 30,000 copies in print, The Skin You Live In has sparked conversations in homes and schools around the country, and served as the basis for facilitated workshops and performances at the museum. 8 Years Ago Passport to the World began in 2000, showcasing the arts and traditions of six Chicago communities: Mexico, Nigeria, Ireland, South Asia, Puerto Rico, and Native America. Thousands of performers and visitors later, Passport has expanded to twelve communities. Through their relationships with Chicago Children’s Museum, communities have formed partnerships with each other, resulting, to the delight of visitors, in exciting, collaborative events. Science is the focus of Wonder Kids, a new, multi-year collaboration between CCM and the Museum of Science and Industry designed to get children excited about science. Sponsored by the Allstate Foundation, Wonder Kids kicked into high gear with Spring into Science, a day-long science event, held at Chicago Children’s Museum on the first day of spring. My Museum, one of our most popular permanent exhibits, invites children to explore selfidentity, community, and culture in a child-focused way. A new addition to the exhibit this year, My Community Matters explores the meaning and importance of community in an audio/video installation created by students through a partnership with Street-Level Youth Media, an organization that offers urban youth hands-on experiences in media and emerging technologies. This year, we welcomed Chicago’s Filipino community to our ever-expanding roster of Passport to the World partners. For three days in June, visitors experienced music, dance, and martial arts performances, cooked and tasted food, and learned about Filipino history, language, and dress. Programs like Passport to the World expose children and families to a rich array of cultures, helping break down stereotypes and promoting strong self—and group—identities. © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E. Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 4 PROVIDING ACCESS 19 Years Ago Free Family Night started in 1989 and was an instant success, attracting 8,000 visitors in its first eight months. That number grew to over 34,000 this year, with families flocking to the museum on Thursdays for Kraft Free Family Night. An additional 18,000 visited on Target First Free Mondays, which, for three years, has been offering literacy programming and free admission to children under the age of 15 the first Monday of every month. These programs help ensure that all of Chicago’s families have access to the remarkable array of resources CCM offers. Kraft Free Family Night ensures that cultural programs, such as Passport and Community Resource Fairs, are accessible to all. Every Thursday evening, families receive free admission and a chance to experience a wealth of innovative programming. Community Resource Fairs take excellent advantage of these increased crowds to offer visitors information, services, and playful activities based on specific themes, such as this year’s Black Farmers Market, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Week of the Young Child events. © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E. Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 5 MAKING CONNECTIONS 25 Years Ago Nineteen eighty-two marked the beginning of The Parker Program, an initiative pairing Chicago’s Francis W. Parker School student volunteers with children with disabilities for focused museum visits. Today, The Parker Program is one of many volunteer opportunities at the museum. This year, the museum welcomed over 200 volunteers and interns, 43 of whom were youth. 20 Years Ago This year, over 45,000 students, teachers, and caregivers experienced one of the themed, facilitated workshops or self-guided field trips included in CCM’s Student and Educator Programs. In 1988, the program added two important components that exist today—pre-and post-visit materials to enhance the experience both on-site and in the classroom, and free museum admission passes for students to share with their families. This year, we expanded our community in new directions, a highlight being the Red Kite Project, a unique theater experience for children with autism. Our art studio was magically transformed into “The Red Kite,” a whimsical, multimedia high-seas ship, where more than 300 children engaged with specially-trained actors to create a multisensory performance using water, paper fans, music, colorful costumes, movement, and video. The play was produced in partnership with Chicago Children’s Theatre, Children’s Brain Research Foundation, The Autism Project, and Oily Cart, a London-based theatre company focused on the needs of children with complex disabilities. We regularly take our community outside the museum’s walls. In addition to participating in numerous neighborhood festivals, CCM To Go, our traveling school workshop program, served a week-long “residency” at the Foundation for Early Childhood Learning in Cicero. Nearly 400 early learners became Dinosaur Detectives in the convenience of their own school—an extraordinary opportunity for these junior paleontologists. All CCM To Go and on-site student workshops are aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards and designed to complement classroom curricula. © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E. Grand Ave., Suite 127 l Chicago, Illinois l 60611 6 EXPORING THE ARTS 13 Years Ago At CCM, it isn’t hard to find an exhausted adult watching a child hard at play, often while lounging on an extraordinary piece of art. What began as a search for public seating evolved into the Art Bench Project, when, in 1995, we commissioned Chicago artists to create one-of-akind benches for the museum’s new Navy Pier facility. The 27 benches that resulted from this project can be found around the museum to this day—delightful, surprising, and unique pieces of functional art. Chicago Children’s Museum began as a response to cutbacks in arts education, and the arts remain a cornerstone of CCM’s programming. In a fully-equipped art studio, and in spaces throughout the museum, children and families have abundant opportunities to create alongside CCM’s arts educators and visiting professionals representing a range of visual and performing arts. This year alone, 15 artists-in residence, including painters, architects, fashion designers, and ceramists, led hands-on, family workshops in the Kraft Artabounds Studio—and many of their works grace the museum’s walls. One such workshop produced a colorful component for the popular summer exhibit, Block Party. Working with professional artists during ArtReach, CCM’s long-running after-school program, students and their families designed large-scale banners representing their own neighborhood blocks for display at the exhibit’s entrance. Now in its second decade, ArtReach continues to provide innovative arts and literacy programming that connects families to resources in their communities—and to each other. ArtReach was supported this year by Deutsche Bank, The Gustafson Family Foundation, and the Donald P. and Byrd M. Kelly Foundation. © 2009 Chicago Children’s Museum l www.chicagochildrensmuseum.org/annual_report.html Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier l 700 E.
