Winter 2017
Happy New Year!
We are so pleased to be able to share this newsletter with our community to let
everyone know what we’ve been up to here at Calvert Hospice! We are especially
pleased that you’ll find some changes in this newsletter, from helpful tips for caregivers,
to a listing of our Board of Directors and staff members. And we are even more pleased
Tips For Caregivers…....2 (if that were possible!) to introduce our new full-time Director of Medicine and
Palliative Care, Dr. Stephanie Carpenter. We are ecstatic that she has joined our team
and are already benefitting from her passion, expertise, and leadership.

As you can tell, 2017 is already shaping up to be another remarkable year for us as we
bring expert and compassionate end-of-life care to our community. We are not only
increasing the number of families and patients we’re reaching for hospice care, we’re
Generous Donors…...6-7 also expanding our services to include palliative care. Currently, these specialty
consultations are available for patients in the hospital and in our nursing homes
throughout the county, but we will soon be expanding into clinics as well. We’ll be sure
Festival of Wreaths…...8 to share with you the growth of this program and how this support can assist individuals
with either chronic or terminal illnesses to improve the quality of their lives.
Circles of Leadership..10 We are also continuing our educational seminars in partnership with Calvert Memorial
Hospital, including how to access VA benefits, how to better understand how hospice
care can help your family, and how to respond to and cope with receiving difficult news.
We are now offering a new approach to grief support by offering an eight-week

program on “Understanding Your Grief.” This option is in addition to our on-going
drop-in groups and individualized counseling. And our Outreach Coordinator, Tanea
Granlund, continues to conduct customized presentations for any size group. Please call
us or visit our website at any time to find out more about how we can help you and
your families “make the most of every moment.”
Finally, as you’ll see inside, we hope you’ll mark your calendars for April 21st, our
Fourth Annual Culinary Event at Running Hare Vineyard! This is the first of our annual

Tips for Caregivers
Why do caregivers need support? Think about what the airline attendant says
to you during the safety briefing prior to a flight. “If you are traveling with a
child and the plane loses pressure, give yourself oxygen first, and then give it to
the child.” Being a caregiver for a loved one involves the same idea-you must
take care of yourself before you can care for anyone else.
.
The effects of short or long term caregiving can include: sleep deprivation, poor
eating habits, failure to exercise, failure to care for yourself by not receiving
medical care that the caregiver may need which then, in turn places the
caregiver at a higher risk for depression, isolation, alcohol and drug abuse,
among other things.
.Practical tips for the caregiver:







Involve older (adult) children
Take a break
Take a walk
Read a book
Explore work options to be home more
Don’t be afraid to ask others for help
Keep an ongoing list of tasks handy of things that need to be
done so that when someone asks, you have it right there
Planning and Organizational Tips:
 Name and phone number of attorney
 List of current medications
 List of family members/friends and phone numbers
 Handle legal matters (Advance Directives, POA, Wills, etc.)









Eat healthy
Investigate respite options
Online support groups are available
Consider hired caregivers
Hire a cleaning service
Investigate Adult Day Care for a few hours days a week
Meals on Wheels
Look to county Aging Offices for resources
Exercise

List and phone numbers for doctors and/or
other medical professionals
Passwords/account information for accounts
and computer access

Safety in the Home:
 Handrails in the bathroom
 Raised toilet seat or bedside commode
 Hospital bed, walker, wheelchair
 Smoke detectors working
 Non-skid rugs/mats
 Clear paths for walking
 Night lights throughout the house/bathroom/kitchen
Communication in the home:
 Cordless/speaker phone
 Cell phone
 Medic alert system
 Baby monitor
 Bell
Caregiving is “heart” work that can be emotionally and physically exhausting. It is vitally important that the
caregiver recognize signs that they may be experiencing burnout and take a step back to
recharge their battery. Self-care can make all the difference in the word for caregivers. Learn
some stress reduction activities (yoga, deep breathing, meditation), exercise, make sure that
you are not ignoring your own health care needs, get enough rest and try to eat well, accept
help from others, acknowledge feelings that you may be having as a caregiver and seek the
support of a family member, pastor or therapist, if needed.
.
“With love in your heart, you will always do the best that you can for your loved one.”

In Their Own Words
Here are a few comments from the many letters we receive every day.
“Thank you for doing an extraordinary service for my mom. Her final months went the way she wanted, with the help, support
and love of the team from Calvert Hospice. She died with dignity, in her own home, when she was ready! Thank you for giving her
the tools she needed to do it her way.”
“Thank you for all you did for my husband in his final days. You were all very kind and caring. I am happy there is a group such
as yours to be there for the patient and the caregiver. God bless you all.
“Thank you so much for all you did to help make my parents’ transition to eternal life as painless as possible & help ensure their last
days were as good as circumstances could be, plus your support before, during, and after their passing. You are all angels!”
“Our family was so impresses with the professionalism of everyone we met from Calvert Hospice. From the social worker at our first
interview to our primary nurse visiting just hours before my mother passed away; they were all compassionate, knowledgeable, and
very respectful. My mother could not have been treated any better!”
“Hospice was wonderful. They let me be my father’s advocate and I did everything. They just come to check on him and his meds.
When my time or another family member time comes, I’m contacting Hospice. Such wonderful caring people.”
“Burnett Calvert Hospice House was amazing, from the Director to the nurse in charge to all the care workers, they were all
fantastic, they cared for my dad like he was their dad. The house was very comfortable and calming. I will never forget the
memories we made with my dad there and the wonderful care he received. Thank you.”
“My husband’s paramount desire was to leave the hospital, go home and die in his own bedroom. There is no way I could of
arranged for that or cared for him without hospice. Hospice gave us seven more months together and I will always be grateful for
that. My biggest regret is that I didn't read through the entire family packet until days after his death. There is a lot useful
information in it and I wish I’d read it during the first weeks of caregiving.”
Moments of Life: Made Possible by Hospice offers stories in
v video and text that demonstrate all that hospice can do to help
p patients and family caregivers at the end of life. Research
c commissioned by NHPCO found a vast majority of people (96%)
who’ve had a personal connection to hospice through a family member or friend are left with a positive
impression of what hospice care can do. However, most Americans don’t have this personal
experience. Many don’t really understand how hospice works, how it is paid for, the scope of services
offered, or the level of expertise the hospice team brings to every patient. Please take some time to
explore MomentsofLife.org, to see all the ways hospice and palliative care teams make more
meaningful moments possible.

Thank you so much to everyone who made our 1st Annual Festival of Wreaths a
success. The Festival of Wreaths is an opportunity for the community to come enjoy
beautiful wreaths designed by local artists and businesses. We had 70 gorgeous
wreaths donated in 2016!
The Festival of Wreaths also offered two wreath making workshops, kids’ crafts, visits
with Santa, entertainment from two local groups, and some delicious food for sale by
Hardesty Haven Catering and Crumb Snatchers. A special thanks to
Beth Graeme for her dedication to the Festival of Wreaths and the beautiful photographs

Volunteer Training
Looking to Give Back in the New Year? Come Volunteer with Us!
We are so thankful for each and every volunteer who
has given us their time, energy, and passion! At this
time, we have approximately 65 active volunteers who
contributed over 4,600 hours of service last year.
Volunteers work with our patients and families, help in
our office, provide support to our bereavement
programs, and work in our Shoppe for Hospice. They
are such an important part of our mission, and we couldn’t continue to serve our patients and families
without them. There are many ways you can help!
.
.
Our next volunteer training will be held February 23 - 25, 2017. Training covers all aspects of a
volunteer’s role within Calvert Hospice and allows new volunteers to interact with our staff members.
For more information or to register for training, please contact Amanda Peterson, Volunteer Coordinator,
at 410-535-0892 x4003.
Calvert Hospice Team Highlights
We’d like you to meet Dr. Stephanie B. Carpenter, Director of Medicine and Palliative Care for Calvert
Hospice.
Dr. Carpenter received her Bachelor of Science from Howard University, her Master of Science from the
University of Rhode Island, and her Medical Degree from Howard University. She completed her residency
training in Internal Medicine at Indiana University and served as an Associate Professor at Indiana University –
Methodist Hospital prior to relocating to the East Coast. Dr. Carpenter worked for Medstar Southern
Maryland Hospital where she was quickly promoted to Assistant Director of Hospitalist Medicine. Thereafter,
she went on to become the Director of Hospitalist Medicine and Director of Palliative Care Medicine at
Calvert Memorial Hospital.
.
Dr. Carpenter’s interest in Palliative Care and Hospice Medicine was sparked during her Medical School
Education when African American reticence toward end of life discussions was explored. Throughout her
training, she discovered that Physician education was lacking with regard to the end of life spectrum. Dr.
Carpenter made it her mission to seek out opportunities to educate herself to ensure she was able to
properly care for her patients throughout their lifetime and not just during manageable illness.
.
Dr. Carpenter has facilitated and implemented end-of-life education and training in
Eldoret, Kenya, a community who previously had not spoken about death and dying.
Today, practitioners are now having these discussions and assisting patients and
families in navigating end of life decisions. Dr. Carpenter was recognized by her peers
for her work at Southern Maryland Hospital and was sought out to assist other
providers with complicated end of life cases. Currently she maintains her position at
Calvert Memorial Hospital as the Director of Palliative Care Medicine. In this position,
she has the opportunity to educate Healthcare providers, families and patients on the
benefits, appropriateness, and humanity of Palliative and Hospice Care.
.
Dr. Carpenter resides in Upper Marlboro, Maryland with her husband
James and their five-year-old daughter Zaria.
Stephanie B. Carpenter, MD.
