‘An Evening of Entertainment 2016’
Alright? How you all doing? So! … A bit of gossip
as to what has been happening in my world for the
months of August / September. (It’s Dan from
reception by the way.) For a while I’ve been
thinking of different ways of how to raise money
for a charity and as my previous employment for
many years consisted of me working in the
entertainment business, on holiday parks abroad
and throughout the UK, I thought, why not bring
some money back into CCAMHS by hosting an evening of
entertainment, with a programme of ‘Butlins’ styled entertainment.
The event was held at the Amy White Theatre in
East Cowes on Saturday 3rd September and as far
as the reviews go, it was a success! We quizzed
the brains and knowledge of the CCAMHS team
with a ‘Big Fat Quiz of the Year’, Children’s
entertainment such as; Kids gameshows, party
dances -You can’t beat a bit of the ‘Agadoo and
Chu Chu Ua!’ and Prize give aways. We had the
Female vocal sounds of Becky Savage, to which
we had a bit of a boogey to and a prize raffle with
the star prize of a holiday in a lodge, to Lower
Hyde Holiday Park. Exciting stuff!!
In total we managed to raise …*Drum roll
please* …Wait for it!…Waaaait for it!
A
WHOPPING £553!!! We are still making up our
minds as to what to spend the money on for
CCAMHS, so if you do have any ideas, please
let us know! A HUGE Thank You to everyone that
come along on the evening and to those who
bought raffle tickets beforehand. I’ll definitely be
holding another event next year, so keep your
eyes peeled for more information!
“If you miss it! You’ll miss out!”

Anti-bullying week 14-18th November
Anti-Bullying Week in England is coordinated by the
Anti-Bullying Alliance and this year takes place from
the 14th-18th November.
Anti-Bullying Week shines a spotlight on bullying and
encourages all children, teachers and parents to take action against
bullying throughout the year.
The theme this year is 'Power for Good' with the following key aims:
 To support children and young people to use their Power for Good –
by understanding the ways in which they are powerful
and
encouraging individual and collective action to stop bullying and create
the best world possible.
 To help parents and carers to use their Power for Good – through
supporting children with issues relating to bullying and working
together with schools to stop bullying.
 To encourage all teachers, school support staff and youth workers to
use their Power for Good – by valuing the difference they can make in
a child’s life, and taking individual and collective action to prevent
bullying and create safe environments where children can thrive.

JARGON BUSTER
Q: What is emotional regulation?
A: “Emotional regulation” is a term used to describe a
person’s ability to effectively manage and respond to
an emotional experience. People use emotional
regulation strategies to cope with difficult situations.
Most of us use a variety of emotion regulation
strategies and apply them to different situations in order to cope with the
demands of our lives and our environment. Some of these coping
strategies are healthy and helpful but some are not.

GETTING MENTAL HEALTHY: GETTING ACTIVE
If you keep active, you are:
 less likely to be depressed, anxious or tense
 more likely to feel good about yourself
 more likely to concentrate and focus better
 more likely to sleep better
 improves your physical health
 more likely to find life interesting and fun
 more likely to improve relationships if you are sharing an activity.
Don’t worry about not doing enough – get started by building a bit more
physical activity into your daily life now. Even a small change can boost
your morale, give you a sense of achievement and help you to feel
better in yourself.
Activity should:
 Be enjoyable – if you don’t know what you might enjoy, try a few
different things
 Help you to feel more competent, or capable. Gardening or Art/Craft
and projects can do this, as well getting you more active.
 Give you a sense of control over your life – that you have choices
you can make (so it isn’t helpful if you start to feel that you have to
exercise). The sense that you are looking after yourself can feel good.
 Help you to escape for a while from the pressures of life.
 Be shared. The companionship involved can be just as important as
the physical activity.
Where Do I Start?
1. Write a list of hobbies interests you have or you think you would
enjoy. Start making time each day for your hobby/interest and build
it up gradually. Switching the TV and electronic devises off will help
you get started.
2. Instead of using the car or public transport, start walking, cycling or
jogging to school, your friends house or to the shops.
3. Take your dog for a walk

the added benefit of supporting a good cause.
Invite a friend to join you and consider outdoor activities for further
benefits to your mental health.
If you can’t afford a gym session, visit one of the free outdoor gyms
on the Island. These are located at St. Mary’s Hospital, Ventnor

UPDATE ON CCAMHS GROUPS
There are lots of groups running at the CCAMHS clinic at the moment.
Timid to Tiger group:
We finished our most recent 10-week group for parents of
children with anxiety in July and are looking forward to
running the next group in November. We are always so
impressed with parents’ and carers’ thoughtful and
supportive approaches in this group.
Self Esteem group:
This 7-week group aims to help young people understand
what self esteem is, how it develops and how to improve it.
Our next group began in September and is another roaring
success!
Skills for Life group:
We hope to run our next Skills for Life group for adolescents
in the New Year 2017 and are looking forward to it.
Facing Your Fears group:
Our Facing Your Fears group for 13-17 year olds with
anxiety began again in September. This 6-week group is
based on cognitive behavioural therapy approaches to
overcoming anxiety and gives young people a chance to
share ideas and support each other to overcome fears. The
group have been working really hard together—well done!
Relaxation group:
Our first 4-week group focused on helping young people
to learn relaxation skills ran in June. This appeared to be
a helpful group to the young people who attended so we
hope to run the group again within the next academic
year.
Activities group:
We ran our first Activities group over the summer for young people who
want to use increased activity to boost their mood. The group was a
definite success so we hope to run it again in 2017.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...KATIE BIRTS
Q. What is your job title?
A. Clinical Psychologist
Q. Describe a typical day doing your job
A. I am fortunate to have a very varied role
within the team as the Clinical Psychologist
linked to the Primary Mental Health arm of
CCAMHS. A big part of my job is offering
therapeutic sessions to children or young people, either individually or
with their parents. I also run some of the groups here at CCAMHS both
for parents and for young people. Additionally, I deliver training
workshops, offer advice and consultation to other professionals and
provide supervision to other members of the team. And last but not least
of course, I am one of the editors of the CCAMHS newsletter.
Q. Name one of the best things about doing your job
A. I think one of the best things about doing this job is getting to work
alongside the hard working, creative and supportive CCAMHS team, a
team who are truly dedicated to supporting the children and young
people of the Isle of Wight to achieve positive emotional health.
