RIDASCREEN®FAST Soya (R7102)
The soybean (Glycine maxima) from the
legume family consists of about 35 %
proteins and is therefore a great plant source
of protein for human consumption. Soya is
often used to produce oil, but also to produce
soy sauce, soya milk, tofu, miso, and tempeh
or soya lecithin as an emulsifier.
Nowadays, more and more soya products
reach the supermarket. Parallel to this more
and more soya allergies are appearing
worldwide. This fact and the laws make a
measurement of soya traces in food essential.
Soya belongs to the so called “Big 8”
allergens and following the food labeling
directive soya has to be labeled as an
ingredient if used in food worldwide.
Gly m1 to Gly m6 are described as allergenic
proteins of soybeans.
The main storage proteins are
ß-conglycinin (Gly m5) and the thermostable
glycinin (Gly m6). ß-Conglycinin represents
the major allergen in children. Glycinin and
ß-conglycinin can trigger anaphylactic
reactions in allergic patients.
If anyone of the mentioned proteins are
detected e.g. by ELISA, soya allergic people
must avoid such soya containing foods.
The new sandwich ELISA, RIDASCREEN®FAST
Soya (Art. No. R7102), extended the
R-Biopharm portfolio of ELISA test systems for
the detection of allergens in food products.
This commercially available ELISA test kit is
suitable for the detection of typical allergenic
soya proteins not only in untreated food but
also in strongly heated food samples.
Specificities of RIDASCREEN®FAST Soya:
• detects different relevant soya proteins like
ß-conglycinin (Gly m5) and thermostable
glycinin (Gly m6)
• also suitable for processed, strongly heated
samples (e.g. sausages, bakery goods,
soups, sauces, margarine, ice cream,
beverages)
• Limit of detection (LOD):
0.31 mg/kg (ppm) soya protein
• Limit of quantification (LOQ):
2.5 mg/kg (ppm) soya protein
• Cross reactivity:
0.0017 % beans and 0.0003 % common
tare but not to peanut, lentil, pea, lupine
• Test duration: 30 min
• reliable determination of soya proteins in
strongly heated samples (in hydrolyzed and
fermented samples soya protein can not be
determined using this sandwich ELISA
system, therefore for these types of samples
a competitive ELISA has to be used)
Example results measured with the RIDASCREEN®FAST Soya (R7102):
Waffle pastry (soya declared on package)
5946 mg/kg soya protein
Noodle snack (soya declared on package)
7.1 mg/kg soya protein
Soya sauce (fermented)
< 2.5 mg/kg soya protein

EnzytecTM Color SO2-Total (E3200)
General features
The analysis of Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is
one of the most common tests in
oeonological laboratories. The now
available EnzytecTM Color SO2-Total
test (Art. No. E3200) is a new
addition to the product line of
colorimetric tests. The range of
products from R-Biopharm is now
complete for wine laboratories and offers
advantages to customers including reducing
their order and administration costs.
The assay is based on a colorimetric reaction.
The total sulfite content in wine is measured
at a pH value where all sulfite is liberated
from its binding partners (e.g. acetaldehyde).
This enables the reaction with a specific
color reagent. The amount of this chromogen
is stochiometrically related to the amount
of sulphite present in the sample, and is
measured on a spectrophotometer at 340 nm.
So the principle is the same as for all other
SO2 colorimetric assays, except that the
chromogen is not the usual DTNB (dithio
nitrobenzoic acid) which is measured at
420 nm. By measuring at 340 nm, less
interferences from the sample color are
observed.
EnzytecTM Color SO2-Total
Art. No. E3200
Manual application
The practical test procedure is similar to all
other enzymatic or colorimetric tests.
The absorbance values measured for the
samples cannot be converted into concentrations with the usual Lambert-Beer formula
because the extinction coefficient of the
chromogen is not known. For this reason, the
test is calibrated via the standard which has
exactly 300 mg g/l SO2. The optical density
measured for a sample is compared to the
standard and allows calculation of the
concentration.
Application on biochemistry analysers
The test can also be performed on biochemistry
analysers. An application note for biochemistry
analysers can be ordered by your local
distributor.

Information from R-Biopharm Rhône,

Kits for Mycotoxin Detection
The R-Biopharm group has a range of test kits
available for the analysis of mycotoxins in a
variety of matrices. Different kit formats make it
possible to analyse for aflatoxins, ochratoxin A,
deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, fumonisins, T-2
and HT-2 irrespective of how well equipped
the laboratory is.
R-Biopharm Rhône has developed a number
of methods for the analysis of an array of
cereals, nuts and also more complex samples
such as coffee and cocoa powder. By using an
immunoaffinity column such as DONPREP® or
any of the EASI-EXTRACT® range in conjunction with HPLC or LC-MS/MS, it is possible to
clean-up samples and inject the toxin directly.
Methods are normally developed in response
to EU directives, a recent example being T-2
and HT-2 analysis in oats, an area where only
limited data is available but maximum levels
looking to be proposed.
Multi-toxin immunoaffinity columns have also
been developed in response to requests from
the industry for quicker, more cost effective
methods of analysis.
This range includes:
RBRP73/RBRP73B DZT MS-PREP®
RBRP112/RBRP112B AO ZON PREP®
RBRP43/RBRP43B EASI-EXTRACT® T-2 & HT-2
To compliment these products and offer our
customers the complete solution, R-Biopharm
supplies both liquid and crystalline standards
as well as reference materials.
For laboratories that perhaps do not have
access to high-tech HPLC or LC-MS/MS
machines, a range of screening tests in the
form of lateral flow dipsticks and card tests
are also available. These allow users to
analyse samples quickly and easily yet be
assured that they are keeping in line with
current legislation. RIDA®QUICK lateral flow
dipsticks are available for screening for
aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol, fumonisin and
zearalenone (evaluation only with
RIDA®QUICK SCAN).
The interpretation of results (RIDA®QUICK
Aflatoxin, DON, Fumonisin) is easy; a visible
test band appears for positive samples however
no test band is visible for negative samples. The
RIDA®QUICK range can also be read quantitatively using RIDA®QUICK SCAN equipment.
It has been stated that the EU Member States
should, with the active involvement of feed
business operators, increase monitoring for
the presence of mycotoxins in cereals and
cereal products intended for human consumption and animal feedingstuffs. With such
a variety of kit formats available, designed to
help businesses carrying out such monitoring, there is no reason why this year’s risk
cannot be tackled quickly and easily.

test kits for mycotoxin analysis.
