A highlight for our programs annually is a visit to the Royal Adelaide Show. Coastal Choices
ensured that each of their participants who wanted to go, did so and great fun was had by all.
Damien had a ball!

Carol and Brian are Retiring!
Our long-term staff, Brian Rankin
and Carol Pfeffer, are retiring after
29 and 32 years respectively of meritorious service, which commenced at
IDSC (Intellectual Disability Services
Council), now Disability SA. They have
both been very loyal, dedicated and
committed to CBS and will be missed
by clients and staff alike.
We wish Carol and Brian all the best
in their well-earned retirement and
know that they will keep in touch (we
hope!).

Aimee Ricketts, Senior Recreation Officer, Coastal
Choices, advised that all of the
participants rode the
historic Semaphore Carousel. This is believed to be
the largest operating carousel in Australia, has 40 handcrafted horses and is run by Rotary (who were very
welcoming).
Wheelchair users can be strapped in (using similar straps
to our vans) or alternatively, if people can weight bear
and hold themselves up, they can sit on bench seats
instead of the horses.
This was a unique experience for everyone!
David on the Carousel.
Earlier in the year we were approached by
the City of Tea Tree Gully to run their
Young
Dreamers
Program, which meets
every Friday night. The group is based at the
Holden Hill Community Centre and enjoys
regular outings, including Club Slick rock ‘n’
roll, bowling and some other activities
planned around the Fringe Festival, Royal
Show, and other events which are on.
They also enjoy the occasional centre based
activity, e.g. cooking and activities involving
life skills.
Coastal participants Malcolm and David
enjoy using the Sports Ability Kit for sports
days at the Reedbeds Community Centre.

Craig with his ’one man
band’ has been entertaining our programs for
years.
Everyone has a fabulous
time dancing along to a
great range of rock and
blues music.
Justin and Craig.
We have three Independent
Living Skills Programs (held at the
Hillcrest
Community
Centre), which assist participants
to develop skills in shopping and
preparing a variety of healthy
meals. The groups then get to
enjoy their feast.
Included in the menu recently have
been: Spanish meatballs, stir fry
prawns, BBQ fish, steak
fajitas, tuna & corn patties and
country chicken pie.
Pam busy preparing another delicious meal!

Day Options Evaluation
Evaluation questionnaires were distributed to all Day Options clients during September and October
2015. These were predominately filled in by families/carers. There was a total of 85 questionnaires
returned (over 40%) - a great response! All suggestions for improvement will be individually and
confidentially addressed with program staff and/or families/carers.
Some comments received were:
”The programs are good value for money, as the less number of clients to staff ratio means
clients receive quality time and attention while on activities”.
“The outings and daily activities are well suited for our daughter and she is always happy and
kept busy”.
“Staff know how to communicate with me which reduces my anxiety and makes my time at
Choices more enjoyable”.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this important evaluation. If you would like a copy of the full
summary please contact Caroline on 8207 1233.

New Socialize West program – by Lynn Feeney
\
Socialize West program is the long awaited sister program to our current Socialize program
which was started in 2012. Socialize West commenced on 9 November 2015, based at The Station
Community Centre, Trinity Uniting Church, Torrens Road, Alberton. It was full steam ahead as
Caroline (Manager Day Options) and Lynn (Day Options Coordinator) arrived bright and early to help
support staff Squizzy and Sam with picking up the participants and introductions to families/carers.
Everyone was very excited and perhaps a little nervous to be joining the new group (some of the
participants know each other from previous groups) but everything went smoothly.
Stevie-Leigh and Peter doing karaoke.
Everyone headed back to the centre for a welcome party
with music, dancing, dress up, games and last but not least
lots of party food. Pastor Ann from the church joined
the group for a short time to make sure that everyone
was settling in and gave a tour of the facilities which
everyone liked. The group have settled nicely into the
new routine, staff and venue surprisingly quickly and are
already participating in new and old activities such as swimming, cooking, a visit to central market, and a variety of
live music events with much enthusiasm. They also plan to
catch up with the Northern Socialize group at joint events
every now and then to form new friendships and build up
relationships with a wide variety of people. The group will
attend the CBS Christmas BBQ at Holden Hill Community
Centre on 18 December, we look forward to seeing them
there. The program is running with 6 participants and
two staff at the moment but at full capacity will have 12
participants and four staff. Please refer to program
vacancies for further information on the group.

SALA Exhibition Such and Much
The official opening of our 7th SALA exhibition Such and Much, by well-known Adelaide identity,
Peter Goers OAM, was held 5/8/15, at the Eastwood Community Centre. It featured exciting and
diverse artworks from 21 artists who attend CBS Art Programs conducted by Hans Kreiner and Tim
Lackmann. It was good to see most of the artists present. Around 30% of the art was sold, with full
proceeds going to the artists. This was the 20th art exhibition which CBS has held or participated
in.
Congratulations to all of the artists:
