Growing up in the South in areas such as southern Middle Tennessee, we speak our own version of the English language. I can remember hearing folks use what I later figured out are idioms. (An idiom is a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words.) A few that you may have heard or used: “Lit up like a Christmas tree” “Fine as frog’s hair” “Grinning like a possum” “Enough money to burn a wet mule” “Fixin” One of my all-time favorites is “cutting up like a new pair of scissors.” I am familiar with those old sayings, and I know their meaning. America and places like Middle Tennessee are changing, so I am unsure how long people will continue to use what is referred to as Southern slang. Perhaps all that will disappear like most everything else that made the South a wonderful place to live and call home. When I think about what is happening with most churches and why many are struggling, one of those old sayings that I am familiar with comes to mind. “Too many irons in the fire.” The idea behind that old saying, “is having too many projects at once and something is bound to fail” (using English.com). The Lord said, “But seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Why was the Lord so demanding of those who would follow Him? Because He understood human nature and He realized not everything can be first in one’s life. As Christians we must force ourselves to decide what deserves our first priority. Why is it dangerous to have too many irons in the fire? Well, it should be obvious that everything in our lives should not be given equal importance. Think about this, especially those who are members of a local Schedule of Services Sunday AM Worship - 9:00 Sunday Bible Classes - 10:15 Sunday PM Worship - 5:00 Wednesday Bible Classes - 6:30 pm Radio Program (WJJM) - 6:20 am daily Westvue Nues and Vues Rick Rolin, editor A weekly publication of the church of Christ at Westvue 1710 Mooresville Hwy Lewisburg, TN 37091 Continued inside . . . When a church member gives everything in his life equal importance, something will eventually suffer for it. Am I being too judgmental when I say church members will miss church services for almost any reasons? Years ago, the only legitimate excuse for missing Lord’s Day services were having to work (the oxen is in the ditch) or sickness, and it had to be more than a common cold. You name it, and today, church members will use it as a valid reason to forsake the assembly. Think about the Sunday evening services at most congregations including Westvue. Sunday evening church services are not only in decline, but there are congregations that are choosing to abandon evening services altogether. Those congregations have decided it is no longer worth the effort to meet for a second Sunday service. What does the future hold for evening services at Westvue? Based on my observation, as a full-time church worker for many years, it is the easiest service to miss and sad to say, even for the most faithful members. For instance, this past Sunday at Westvue, the morning attendance was 285 and the evening number was 115. Really? Was it necessary for 170 of you to be absent for that service? Another danger created by too many irons in the fire is more subtle. I agree that not every Sunday service will be as encouraging as some. You must admit, zeal and enthusiasm are missing ingredients at some services. Members who would literally fight to keep a mechanical instrument out of the worship service show little concern when members show little enthusiasm for the worship of God. I think I am safe in saying most church members do not assemble with an attitude of indifference. It is not that they have little regard for God and Jesus’ sacrifice made on our behalf. The problem, it is difficult to muster up zeal for worship when you have spent your energy on other things. Paul said, “. . . not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11). It is impossible to have fervor for everything. Thus, what should we do about this dilemma that often confronts Christians living in a materialistic world? Well, if we are serious about living for Jesus Christ, we must be able to accept that not everything can be first in our lives. The Lord Jesus said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His Work” (John 4:34). I am not suggesting any of us will have the single-minded devotion of Jesus, or even the apostle Paul, who as a sinner states his commitment to Christ when he said, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). However, we must be willing to separate wants and desires from the important and necessary. Therefore, as you examine your life as a Christian and your performance as a Christian, do you have too many irons in the fire?
