TSTC was created to help boys and girls in the North Houston area excel in the sport of youth track & field. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt Texas Nonprofit Corporation. In its short life, we have produced several Athletes recognized in the Elite Youth Ranking, District and Regional Champs and a Junior Olympic Medalist. The club averages about 50 athletes per season (ages 6 – 18) and is smaller than most Houston based clubs. However, bigger is not always better and our size allows coaches to give athletes individual instruction and guidance. The leadership fosters teamwork, mutual respect, encouragement and a fun family atmosphere. Mission and Objectives First and Foremost, we place the emotional and physical well-being to the athletes ahead of all other considerations. We are here to help the individual athlete enjoy our sport rather than simply promote the club. We want a fun and enjoyable experience for all our kids, no matter what level they achieve. We encourage athletes to set goals for themselves so they can experience success when they achieve those goals. And, we challenge them to be their best. Our mission is to promote the development of youth track & field and to provide long-term growth opportunities to athletes through their association with the sport. Our objectives are to: To challenge our youth through track and field, and to strive for excellence in every life endeavor. To teach fundamental track and field principles that will equip youth athletes with the skills to compete on a national level. To develop the minds and bodies for future leadership athletic training and discipline. To develop a spirit of competitiveness that will foster a desire to always strive for excellence. Our Motto DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, DISCIPLINE. PARENT AND ADULT PARTICIPATION TSTC is a 501(c)(3) Texas Non Profit Corporation organization that promotes sports for youth run entirely by volunteers. These volunteers are parents much like you. Because this is all done on a volunteer basis, your help support, and cooperation is critical for this program to be a success. To promote cooperation and to ensure that a few individuals will not be doing all the work for many, we sincerely hope and Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. All Rights Reserved. 5|Page encourage each parent/guardian to participate in helping to accomplish the various functions of the club (i.e. coaching, timers, data entry, clothing sales, fundraisers, etc.) The number of participants in the Texas Stallions Track Club’s Program will vary from season to season. Parent and adult participation IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL. It takes approximately one adult for every 3 athletes to coach and administrate the TSTC's Programs. During competitions with other cross country teams, USA Track and Field programs, and post season programs, additional adult participation may also be necessary. WE EXPECT YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STALLION PROGRAMS. There are many opportunities (job descriptions) available. EXPERIENCE IS NOT A REQUIREMENT, NOR IS IT NECESSARY, FOR MOST OF THE POSITIONS. There are many types of jobs, which require adult support in order to make each season successful. These jobs are both on and off the course. We expect adults to be part of the TEXAS STALLIONS TRACK CLUB team by fulfilling and taking responsibility for the many available positions. The TEXAS STALLIONS TRACK CLUB must have the COMMITMENT OF THE PARENTS AND ADULTS representing the athletes. We depend and RELY on you to VOLUNTEER. CHILD WELFARE The Texas Stallions Track Club is sensitive to inappropriate behavior toward children. The Amateur Athletic Union and USA Track and Field requires that all individuals in direct contact with your children fill out a volunteer application sheet and undergo a background check. We may be performing random screenings of references and information. All of the information given will be processed and maintained in a confidential and professional manner. CODE OF CONDUCT AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct which is detrimental to the club may result in an athlete’s and/or parent’s dismissal. Fees will not be refunded. While not desired, the athlete may suffer because of misconduct by the parent. All Board Members, Parents, Coaches, and Athlete’s will govern themselves according to the Texas Stallions Track Club, Amateur Athletic Union and USA Track and Field Rules, Regulations and Guidelines. Parent Responsibilities I will support my athletes by being present at meets, and practices as much as possible. I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all athletes, coaches, and officials at every meet, practice or youth sports event. I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my child ahead of any personal desire to win. I will insist that my child participate in a safe and healthy environment. I will support the club by volunteering to help with meets and fundraising events. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. All Rights Reserved. 6|Page I will provide support for coaches and officials working with my child to provide a positive and enjoyable experience for all. Parental interference with coaching will not be tolerated I will demand a drug and alcohol free sports environment for my child and agree to assist by refraining from their use at all youth sports events. I will remember that the events are for the children and not for adults. I will do my best to make youth sports fun for my child. I will ask my child to treat other athletes, coaches, fans and officials with respect regardless of race, sex, creed or ability. I will promise to help my child enjoy the youth sports experience within my personal constraints by being a respectable fan, providing transportation or whatever I am capable of doing. I will not interfere with the coaches at practice and track meets regarding the events that the coach selects for the athlete. If necessary, I will discuss my athletes training/coaching program with the coaches following practice. Appointments with the athlete’s coach are highly recommended. I will address any concerns with a Coach or Board Member in an appropriate time, place and manner. I will not speak ill of the Club and/or create dissention among Club members. This type of behavior will not be tolerated. Violation of this rule will result in immediate dismissal from the club. Fees will not be refunded. If my athlete is selected to participate in a relay, including as an alternate, my athlete is required to participate in all scheduled meets, including post-season. If we are not able to fulfill this requirement, we will notify the coaches as soon as this is a possibility. I understand my athlete may be replaced on the relay. I will ensure my athlete arrives at least one (1) hour prior to the start of their first event and check in with a Stallions coach at each meet. I will not allow my athlete to enter into an unsanctioned meet or road race during the season unless the coaching staff has given prior consent. Violation of this rule will result in immediate dismissal from the club. Fees will not be refunded. I understand that I am not permitted on the track or in practice areas during practice or meets. I will refrain from coaching or instructing athletes during practice sessions. Coaching is the exclusive responsibility of the Stallions coaching staff. I will notify the coach through the Stallions hotline (832-415-0568) if my child will not be able to participate in a scheduled practice or event. Notification should be given as early as possible. I understand that if my child qualifies for a meet, I am obligated to ensure my child’s participation. I understand Out of town travel will entail additional costs at the parent’s expense. I understand that if my child does not participate in a meet, the club will be reimbursed for the meet fee. I understand that I will be required to remain at all practices and events or have a representative 16 or older not participating as a member of the Texas Stallions Track club accompanies my primary, sub-bantam, or bantam athlete. I understand that the Texas Stallions will not accept responsibility for other minor children. All siblings/spectators must be with a responsible person 18 years or older not participating in the Texas Stallions Track Club. I understand that there is a $150 fundraising requirement per athlete. I have the option to buyout at the time of registration. Several fundraising opportunities will be provided to families. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. All Rights Reserved. 7|Page I understand that failure to participate in at least 50% of regularly scheduled practices, which my athlete will not be allowed to compete in the upcoming meet. This includes post-season meets such as District, National Qualifier, and the Junior Olympics. The only exception to this rule, will be for emergencies or prior approved coordination from the Head Coach and/or Assistant Head Coach. I understand that if my athletes miss more than 50% of practices in the post-season, the athlete’s participation in the club will be terminated. I understand that if I am in accordance with AAU and USATF Rules and Regulations, I must have approval to compete with another club. I understand that all monies paid to the Texas Stallions Track Club are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Athlete Responsibilities Athletes have the responsibility to: Exhibit good conduct at all practices and meets. Athletes should conduct themselves in a responsible manner, showing respect for all coaches, team parents, and track officials at all times. Any acts of severe misconduct will be addressed by the executive board; which could lead to dismissal or non-participation of activities. Enjoy the basic rights of citizenship recognized by law for persons of their age and maturity. Texas Stallions shall foster a climate of mutual respect for the rights of others. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Comply with USATF/AAU rules. Any athlete who violates USATF/AAU rules shall be subject to disciplinary measures designed to correct the misconduct and promote adherence by all athletes who are members of Texas Stallions Youth Track Club. Wear proper attire to practices and meets. Sweats and warm-ups for practices, and uniforms for meets. The attire may vary according to seasonal changes. Be sure to label all garments, shoes, etc. Lost items are the responsibility of the athlete. Ensure upper torso and private areas are covered during all club events (practices, meets, etc…). We are in mixed company and age groups, please be respectful. Remain in a designated area during track meets as determined by coaches. Profanity and vandalism (destruction of personal or private property) will not be tolerated by this organization. Any athlete found guilty will be disciplined by the board. Every athlete is required to arrive to practice on time. Participation is mandatory. Coaches will not delay scheduled activities or extend practice to accommodate late arrivals. Participate in at least 50% of all regularly scheduled practices. No athlete will be allowed to participate in training activities without completing the Stallions warm-up routines. Be respectful to coaches, officials, teammates and competitors on other teams. Inappropriate language will not be tolerated. Excellence is but simple…practice, practice, practice. PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION As we are a family organization with children, and teens of both gender, we have to be mindful to be respectful and courteous at all times not only in what is said, but in conduct. During team events, please keep PDA’s to a minimum and demonstrate high standard of decorum. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. All Rights Reserved. 8|Page ABILITIES AND LEVELS OF CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETES The TEXAS STALLIONS TRACK CLUB does not pre-qualify young athletes with regard to their physical or mental capacity to participate and perform in this organization. The only requirement is that they meet age and medical requirements established by the USA Track and Field and/or Amateur Athletic Union Track and Field/Cross Country Program. The TEXAS STALLIONS TRACK CLUB’S coaching staff will determine from the beginning and will continuously re-evaluate throughout the season the athlete’s development and physical abilities for seeding purposes. Some general standards, which will be observed to determine an athlete’s qualifications, are as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Attendance and timeliness at practices and meets. Focus on instructions of coaching. Dedication and determination on carrying out coaching procedure. Commitment to team spirit. Camaraderie and interaction with other athletes and adults in the program. Respectful attitude for cross country etiquette. Obeying and observing rules. Having proper attire and equipment at all times for warm-up, warm-down, cross training, plyometric, special event training and meet competition. 9. Maintenance and care of uniforms, equipment, and facilities. 10. Maintaining acceptable academic standards. 11. Performance level in competition. These are a few of the standards that will be used to determine how the athlete is seeded, in addition to those already described elsewhere in this handbook. THERE WILL BE COACHING STAFF SKILLED AND READY TO WORK WITH THE ATHLETE’S LEVEL OF CAPABILITIES. Willingness to participate, in and of itself, is a very acceptable level and standard for membership in the TEXAS STALLIONS TRACK CLUB. COMMUNICATION We strive to keep our club members informed. 1. Email-We will primarily communicate with team members via email. Announcements about practices, meets, changes in schedules, and important information will be sent via an email distribution list. When you complete registration forms, please include an email address. This will be the primary method of communication throughout the season. If you want information sent to more than one email address, that is fine, too, include as many email addresses as you need. The sooner you register, the sooner you will be added to the email distribution list and receive team announcements. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. All Rights Reserved. 9|Page Dedication, Determination, Discipline 2. Website-www.texasstallions.org-Important information about practices, forms for meets, announcements of upcoming events etc, will always be displayed on the team website. Please check the website often so you are up-to-date on upcoming events and changes as the season progresses. There is a public and team member view to the website, please ensure you are registered. 3. In Person-We will make announcements of upcoming practices and events at the end of practice. But, all of this information will be repeated and presented in greater detail via email and the website. While coaches and board member contact information will be provided, please rely on the email and website for the most current and up-to-date information. Please call or text us after all other resources have been exhausted, as we are all volunteers and have jobs and families to tend to. If you must contact us send an email or call/text us between the hours of 5pm – 8pm only. 4. Social Media—Last minute changes will happen for practices and meets. We will use Facebook @TexasStallionsTrackClub and Twitter @txstallions, along with the other methods listed above to keep you informed. As parents we always want to do what is best for our children. You know your kids better than anyone else. In the event that there is information about your child that would be beneficial to the coach, please let them know. HOWEVER, one cannot expect a conversation with a coach to take precedence over the practice. The coaches are limited in the time they have with the runners. Without the full attention of the coach the practice turns to chaos. If you need to talk to the coach, PLEASE wait until the end of practice, or make some other arrangements. MEMBERSHIP Membership in the TEXAS STALLIONS TRACK CLUB is open to youth ages 6 – 18. Membership is contingent upon: 1. Applicant’s acceptance into Amateur Athletic Union and/or USA Track and Field. 2. Receipt of Membership Fee. The Membership Fee is two-part, Registration and Fundraising. Fees and fundraising levels will be set per season and will be prescribed in a separate handout entitle Membership Fees and Fundraising Requirements. Typical membership fees includes dues, uniform, Association membership, Secondary Insurance, one meet entry fee, Spirit Pack, team award and party. However, this may vary from season to season and will be clearly outlined in Statement of Membership Fees and Fundraising Requirements. Families that register more than athlete are eligible to receive a discount on membership and fundraising requirements. Registration also requires 2 copies of the athlete’s birth certificate and 2 head shot photos. Fundraising is discussed in more detail below. 3. Receipt of Required Documents. 2 copies each of Athlete Birth Certificate, Photo, and a signed Parent Acknowledgment. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. All Rights Reserved. 10 | P a g e 4. Late Fees & NSF Fees: There is a Late Fee of $15 for all payments not received by their posted deadline unless otherwise stated. There is a $35 NSF Fee on all returned checks and electronic payments. Failure to pay fees in a timely manner will result in your athlete not being able to participate. Registration in future seasons will be restricted until all payments are brought current. The Texas Stallions Track Club reserves the right to withhold uniforms, meet entry, spirit packs, etc…. until all fees have been received. Parents/Athletes are responsible for timely payment of all fees in order to obtain a uniform. Membership fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Athletes will not be allowed to run in any meet until all membership fees are paid in full and paperwork is submitted. This includes past due fees for returning members. Financial Hardship. Depending on the years fundraising efforts, sometimes there are monies available for financial hardship. Please see a board member for additional information. Registration Limits. The Texas Stallions believes in a small team environment and generally limits registration based on coaching support, age division and gender participation to try and have a balanced environment. We find that the kids have more fun and therefore perform better when they have friends their own age on the team. However, registration is filled on a first come first serve basis, giving returning members priority. PAYMENT PLANS: In some cases the club may allow fees to be paid in installments with a minimum deposit of $50 + $5 processing fee. After deposit you have 60 days or until 9/18 for Cross Country, 1/5 for Indoor, or 3/30 for Outdoor or whichever is sooner, to complete payment of membership fees. No new payment plans will be allowed after the dates above during each season. Division Levels and Events There are several youth divisions within the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), USA Track and Field Association (USATF), and Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (T.A.A.F.). Athletes compete in divisions based on the year the athlete was born or their age as of 12/31 of the current competition year. These age divisions provide young athletes the opportunity to compete with other athletes of similar ability. The age divisions for competition year are as follows: AAU Division Primary/8-Under Sub-Bantam/9 years Bantam/10 years Sub-Midget/11 years Midget/12 years Sub-Youth/13 years USATF Division Primary (8 & under) T.A.A.F. Anyone who reaches his /her nineteenth (19) birthdays on or before the last day of the National Championship Meet is not eligible to compete in any qualifying meets. All athletes must run in the correct age group. FUNDRAISING The club has a couple of year-round fundraising opportunities throughout the year. All families are required to participate in funding efforts. Parents and athletes must raise an in accordance with their membership plan. Parents may opt out by paying a buy-out fee equal to the same per athlete fundraising fee in lieu of participation of fundraising events. Families that register more than one athlete will receive a 66% fundraising discount for each athlete after the first one. For example a family registering 2 athletes during outdoors will be responsible for $200 in fundraising instead of $300. Monies received from fundraising efforts will be used to purchase training equipment, storage space, and training for coaches, etc… If sufficient funds are raised, the board may elect to award travel grants and/or college scholarships to athletes. All fundraising obligations must be met by September 30 for Cross Country, April 30 for Indoor/Outdoor registration, unless otherwise stated during the season. The board has decided on the following annual fundraisers: Meet/Club Sponsorship. You can sale advertising on the team website and/or banner through the clubs sponsorship packages. They range from $100 - $2,000 with different benefits at each level. See sponsorship brochure on team website. Please see our sponsorship brochure. ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program: Sell 2-year subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine for $40 and the Club KEEPS 75% of the profits upfront – that's $30 for every sale! This fundraiser can be used to cover registration as well as fundraising fees. Members will need to sell 12 subscriptions for 100% coverage. Form can be found on our web site. Fiesta Super Sports Club. The Fiesta Super Sports Club is a redemption program that runs from January through May every year. On each score card is a list of products that are part of the program. From then on, every time you shop at Fiesta or any other store and purchase items from that score card list, you remove the proof of purchase labels, box tops, etc. and turn them in to our fundraising coordinator. At a set time in April and May, our fundraising coordinator then turns in all the labels collected from each team member for a check! It's that simple! The previous year’s scorecard can be found online. As soon as the new scorecard is available, it will be posted. The labels don’t change much from year to year, so start saving now. Any labels turned in during Cross Country or Indoors will be counted toward your fundraising requirement. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook ©Copyright 2012. Texas Stallions Relays. The Texas Stallions hosts an outdoor track and field meet in April. Participation in the meet is a mandatory fundraiser for the Outdoor Participants. Season Obligations: o Indoor - $50 1st Athlete, $20 each additional athlete o Outdoor- $150 1st Athlete, $50 each additional athlete o Cross Country- $75 1st Athlete, $40 each additional athlete For additional information on any of our fundraising programs please contact Ms. Brenda Walker at 832-415-0568 x107 or email [email protected]. PRACTICES Practices days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings and Saturday Mornings. It is not necessary to attend all practices, but if an athlete does not train for their competition, they may not perform at peak levels. We recommend that athletes attend all practices and follow all instruction. Failure to participate in at least 50% of practices will result in the athlete being unable to compete in the upcoming meet. A calendar of practices will be published on the clubs website, and should be available in the weekly newsletter. The athletes will be sore following the first 2 weeks but as they condition that soreness will leave. All practices begin promptly at their designated starting times, you should try to arrive 10 minutes early prior to the workout. Practice times may change during daylight savings time to ensure safe running condition for our athletes. Practices begin with a short warm-up run and 10-15 minutes of dynamic warm up drills. After the warmups, we will proceed to conditioning the athletes by doing workouts designed for them to achieve their goals. The duration and type of running varies. If your child is late to practices, they will have to stretch with the late crew, at a designated area on the field. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL YOUR CHILD BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE WITHOUT HAVING A PROPER WARM-UP. Also your child will not be allowed to leave the practice without doing a “cool down lap”. If you have to leave the practice before the scheduled finish time, please allow enough time for this important portion of the practice. It is in the best interest of your child that he/she adheres to this rule. During hot weather, loose shorts and tops are fine for practice. When the weather turns cooler, please make sure that the athlete has some warm clothes (sweats, jacket, pants) to put on after practice. This is Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. All Rights Reserved. 13 | P a g e very important. Also, please send along a bottle of water to help keep the athlete hydrated during and immediately after practice. Our practice schedule has a rotating format, please be sure to check the calendar, the locations may vary from day to day. Once we start practicing you will be notified of the upcoming practice locations a week ahead of time in the newsletter and on the web site www.texasstallions.org. There will be no practice if it is raining significantly, but we may run through light or off-and-on drizzle in some cases. Please do not call one of the coaches or board members before practice, if it is a close call we’ll probably head to the practice sight and decide at the last minute. Use your judgment as to whether you want to drive to the site in these cases. Where possible the site, Twitter, and Facebook pages will be updated, as well as our hotline. At all practices and meets, athletes and their parents are expected to abide by usual standards of good behavior. No use of alcohol, profanity, taunting, fighting, or verbal abuse will be tolerated. Any person violating any of the above will be asked to leave immediately and further action may be taken. The practice schedule and location will be posted via the Stallions Web Site. It is recommended that you check it regularly. Most Saturday Practices begin at 10 am. Weekday Practices are generally Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:30pm during Daylight Savings Time. During Non-Daylight Savings we generally have organized Saturday morning practices and on your own workouts during the week. We recommend athletes eat an afternoon snack, but not within an hour of practice start time. Light Dry snacks are okay if you must such as peanut butter and crackers. Athletes should have the following at each practice: o Water Bottle and/or sports drink: Each athlete should bring a water bottle to every practice. It is very helpful if the water bottle labeled with their name. o Running apparel: When it’s warm, this will consist of shorts (NO BASKETBALL SHORTS) and a t-shirt. When it is cooler, this can be the “compression garments” long sleeve top and full length bottoms. It is helpful if the bottoms are the kind that has zippers or snaps up the legs. This makes it easier for kids to remove the sweats without removing their shoes. When it is raining, athletes should have a waterproof coat and pants. When it is cold, athletes should plan on running the entire workout in their sweats and should have hats and gloves. When it is dark, athletes should bring a headlamp that will stay on their heads when they run. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. All Rights Reserved. 14 | P a g e o Warm-ups: Every athlete should wear sweats (top and bottom) to every practice. These will be worn through our dynamic stretching routine and warm-up run. The coaches will instruct the athletes when to remove their sweats. Our coaches believe that it is very important for proper muscle care for all of our athletes. If it is a hot day, please wear light-weight sweats. o Training Shoes – NO BASKETBALL SHOES OR CASUAL SHOES. Athletes wear running shoes during practice. Spikes are only worn for meets, NOT for practices. Local running stores such as Fleet Feet, have employees skilled at finding the right shoe for your child and offer a price discount of 10% for athletes and coaches of the Texas Stallions Track Team, just ask! o ATHLETES AGED 10 AND UNDER: PARENTS MUST REMAIN AT PRACTICE OR LEAVE A RESPONSIBLE NONPARTICIPATING PARTY OVER 16 AT ALL PRACTICES. DURING CROSS COUNTRY, IF THE ATHLETE IS 10 OR YOUNGER, A PARENT MUST EITHER RUN WITH THEIR CHILD’S GROUP OR WALK THE COURSE SO THEY ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AND WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF ALL ATHLETES. Athletes must follow directions of the coaching staff during practices and meets. Profanity, horseplay, abusive language, or fighting is not allowed. Members unwilling to participate in workouts will be dismissed from the track or practice area and will not be allowed to return until coaches have spoken with the parents. Repeated misconduct is grounds for dismissal from the program. Fees will not be refunded. IMPORTANCE OF WARM-UP, STRETCHING AND COOL DOWN Everything we do has a reason. It is essential we instill in our kids the importance of proper warm-up and stretching before a practice or race, followed by a proper cool-down. For the body to operate at peak levels and stay injury free, our athletes need to follow this procedure before and after each race and at every practice session. Instructions on the proper technique of warm-up/cool-down will be given at every practice. Parents, please help support our efforts to instill this in our athletes. 1. Upon arrival at the course for practice, your child should run the required amount of distance WITHOUT being told. 2. Do not leave practice without your child doing at least 1 cool-down lap. 3. On meet days, remind your child that they need to warm-up, stretch, and cool down for their race. 4. At the meets, coaches may be busy, so have your child get in the habit of doing the stretches themselves, or with the other kids in their age group preparing for the same race. Track and field itself is comprised of various competitive athletic contests based around the activities of running, jumping and throwing. The name of the sport derives from the venue for the competitions: a stadium which features an oval running track surrounding a grassy area. The throwing and jumping events generally take place within the central enclosed area. Outdoor Track and Field Competition Outdoor track and field competitions are held at a track and field stadium where there are outer ovalshaped running track and an area of turf within this track – the field, where most field events are held. Developmental meets begin in late March and occur most weekends through mid-June. Championship meets begin in mid-June and culminate with the National Championship at the end of July. Most meets are on Saturday, and typically start between 8am and 9am and end between 4pm and 6pm. Championship meets cover 2 -4 days and will span over weekdays. The complete schedule will be made available as soon as possible. The developmental meets are held at various locations across the Houston Metropolitan area. However, the black squad may travel to meets outside the area to ensure better preparation for the championship meets. Meet entry fees are typically $5 for athletes and spectators each week and are not included in membership fees. Runners should arrive at the meets by 30 minutes before start to sign in and get their bib number and/or wrist band, which is required at the finish line. Meets start with a team warm-up. Athletes in 12 & under can compete in up to 3 events and athletes 13 & older can compete in up to 4 events. All meets, except championship meets run on a rolling schedule, meaning that one event will start right after the next. No firm schedule is posted and events can run early or late. Therefore you need to be present the duration of the developmental meet to ensure you make your race and to support your team mates! The facilities bear similarities with their outdoor equivalents. Typically, a central area is surrounded by a 200-metre oval track with four to eight lanes. Some tracks are banked at the turns to allow athletes to run around the radius more comfortably. Sometimes, there is also a second running track going straight across the field area, parallel to the straights of the main circuit. This track is used for the short sprints and hurdle events. The Stallions offers indoor competition for Middle and High School only, due to developmental meet availability. Typically the meets we attend are hosted by colleges that offer open events for high school and/or club athletes. Meets will begin early January and may require travel. Meet entry fees are typically $15 per event entered. Details are provided once events are selected. The meet announcer makes the calls for each event check-in. It is your responsibility to get to your event. Once arriving at the check in bull pen, do not leave the area. Post Competition Athletes should do their cool-down runs after race events. Athletes should drink fluids after competing. Championship Meets Details for championship meets will vary from year to year and season to season. Details will be provided when available. Some basic information you need to know. Meet Fees range from $15 - $45 per meet. You must check-in a minimum of 1 hour prior to the posted time schedule, failure to do so will cause your athlete to be scratched. Also, each athlete is typically issued a bib number and wristband. These must be kept for the duration of the meet. There will be a fee to replace them, and failure to have them at event time will cause your athlete to be scratched. MEET/PRACTICE ATTIRE Club Uniforms. The competition uniform that was provided is the only one allowed for use during the meets. If tights are worn, then the competition shorts MUST be worn over them. Only black, red or white body armor/undergarments that are visible may be worn. Training Shoes. The most important piece of equipment needed is a good pair of training shoes. Running shoes (Not basketball shoes or cross-training shoes) are required for all athletes during practice sessions. YOUR ATHLETE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE WITHOUT PROPER SHOES. INJURY CAN OCCUR WEARING IMPROPER FOOT WEAR. Shoes for Competitive Events. Athletes may compete in running shoes; However Competition Spikes are encouraged for meets (unless otherwise noted). Please consult with a coach before purchasing to ensure the right type is acquired. Sweats/Athletic Wear. Warm-up sweats are recommended for all practices and meets. Other athletic wear must be approved by the coaching staff. MEET ETIQUETTE Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. All Rights Reserved. 19 | P a g e At any meet, everyone is requested to observe certain rules of etiquette. When the track or field is not open to the public, do not enter unless requested to be there. When crossing the track or course, be aware of races in progress. Treat the track/course as if it were a busy roadway. NEVER “poor mouth” other competitors. Taunting and baiting is prohibited. DO NOT pace (run along-side) any runner during a race. This will result in the disqualification of that runner. Keep all non-club members (brothers, sisters, friends, relatives) under supervision. We expect our athletes (and parents) to behave in a sportsmanlike manner. You are a reflection of our club, so please act accordingly. You belong to a club that is well respected in the Conference. BE PROUD OF IT! LIFESTYLE ISSUES Sleep Good sleep habits are crucial to the success of your athlete’s training. Adequate sleep (8 – 10 hours per day) is essential to permit regeneration. Also adequate sleep, especially the hours before midnight are necessary to allow recovery from exercise. Nutrition Proper nutrition is essential to the success of your athlete’s training. Athletes should eat a variety of nutritious foods and avoid unhealthy choices. Also, most diets do not provide the minimum daily recommended vitamin intake. Therefore it is strongly encouraged that all athletes take a daily multivitamin. The nutritional status of the athlete greatly determines the effectiveness of the training and the ability to handle training. Let’s not get carried away. Certain guidelines are important. If you serve your child a balanced meal and stay away from the fatty fast food restaurants, you’ll go a long way in allowing your child to perform at his peak level. It is important to get your child on a proper eating program that is balanced in protein (10-15%), carbohydrates (55-65%), and fats (25-30%). Here are some general suggestions for the diets of athletes. Choose a balance of the traditional four food groups (fruits and vegetables, dairy, meats, and grains). Avoid excess amounts of highly process and refined foods (such as sugars, oils, and flours). They are not recognized by the body as foods and are difficult for the body to process. The diet should be fairly low in fats and simple carbohydrates. It should be rich in vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, and protein. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. All Rights Reserved. 20 | P a g e Sufficient protein should be present in meals to prevent extreme insulin fluctuations due to the rapid digestion of carbohydrates. Simply cooked meals or raw foods are nutritionally superior to complex preparations. Ideally, several small meals scattered throughout the day is most effective for the athlete. Breakfast is extremely important, and should contain some protein rich food. Eating a variety of foods increases nutritive value of the diet, and enhances immune system function. Some examples of good foods the night before a meet might be: Protein: Chicken, fish, beans, dairy, eggs. Carbohydrates: Potatoes, pasta, bread, vegetables, frozen yogurt. Fats: Butter, margarine. Try CHICKEN PARMESAN, or SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS, with milk as a drink. Frozen yogurt is a great desert. HIDE THE SOFT DRINKS Hydration Sufficient water is crucial to maintaining efficiency in nearly all body functions. It is equally important to adaptations from training. Following are some basic guidelines for athlete’s hydration needs. Athletes should drink approximately one gallon of water a day as a minimum. This water is best taken in small servings scattered throughout the day. Increased water intake may be necessary during hot or dry weather, especially when windy. Air travel tends to dehydrate the body quickly, so increasing water intake prior to such trips is advised. Intake of coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks should be limited or eliminated. These act as diuretics and act to dehydrate the body. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. INTERNET/PHOTO USE POLICY The website of the Texas Stallions Track Club includes news articles and a photo gallery displaying our athletes during track meets, practices, and other events throughout the season. These sections of our website are strictly used to feature our athletes and their accomplishments as well as recognize our Junior Olympians for sponsorships and recruits. We feel this is an important way to keep our families and friends informed and our community involved. Every effort will be made to protect the individual identity of all children involved in the Texas Stallions Track program. No personal information, such as phone numbers and addresses will be placed on the website. We also publish media releases to showcase our athlete’s accomplishments so they have tools to boost their scholarship applications and encourage business sponsorship. For these reasons we are asking for your permission to use yours/your child’s photographs on the Texas Stallions website and media releases. CLUB TRAVEL Travel to out of town meets entails additional costs not included in the membership fee. The club arranges hotel accommodations for out of town meets. The club will make every effort to have all members stay at the same location. Payment for individual rooms is the responsibility of the parent. If the member chooses not to stay at the club’s hotel, the member is responsible for making their own accommodations. The club tries to raise funds to offset athlete and coaches costs to away meets. It is essential that all members support the clubs fundraising efforts. It will typically cost $10,000 - $20,000 to support athlete’s travel and lodging for a week at the Junior Olympics. If the parent or legal guardian cannot travel with the child, a coach must be notified. It is the responsibility of the parent to find a suitable chaperone and provide a signed waiver to the chaperone and Stallions staff. It is the parent’s responsibility to provide for the athlete’s needs for the trip. The chaperone is expected to fulfill the responsibilities of the parent. Coaches will not act as chaperone’s to away meets. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. Interval Training - A type of training during which an athlete runs a given pace for a given distance and time, and then takes a specified amount of rest before another bout of intense running. The “interval” commonly refers to both the running bout and the rest period. The rest period can either be constituted by complete rest, or simply a lowering of intensity. Javelin - a track and field throwing event where a spear-like javelin is thrown for distance. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. It's important in long distance races to have the proper pace; slow enough so the runner doesn't tire out before the end of the race, but fast enough to win. Pentathlon - a combined track and field event that consists of 5 different events. Pins/Spikes- Either term can be used to refer to the small metal implements that are screwed in to the holes in the bottom of the spikes (the shoes). Longer pins/spikes are used for softer track surfaces. Most tracks and track meets have a limit on the length of pins/spikes that are allowed since longer spikes can tear up the track surface. Many meets will inspect and measure the length of the pins in the shoes as part of the check-in process before the competition begins. Pole vault - a track and field jumping event where a long pole is used to propel the jumper to great heights. Race walk - A type of race in which the athlete must have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, and the advancing leg must be straight. Sandpit - an area in a jumping event (i.e. long jump or triple jump) where the athlete lands. Scratch line - The line indicating the center point of a relay race's exchange zone. Sector- Designated landing area for the throwing events in which all thrown implements (discus, hammer, javelin, shot) must land to be considered fair. Set Position - The still position runners must assume immediately before the starting device goes off. Shot put - a field throwing event where a heavy ball is thrown for distance. Spikes- Lightweight specialty shoes with holes in the bottom for the insertion of metal pins. The number of holes and the type of pins used vary by event, conditions and rules. Spikes are used for competition and sometimes in training and should be worn only on soft surfaces (such as a track or track surface) to prevent wearing down the point on the pins which would reduce the traction that they offer. Split - A time measured at certain intervals of a race, used to judge the pace of a runner or group of runners. Sprint - A full-speed run over a short distance. In Olympic events, the 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters are considered sprints; the finishing kick of a distance race can be described as a sprint. Staggered start - Used in races that are run around a curve, a staggered start places runners at different points corresponding to the lane in which they are running. The runner in the outside lane starts at a point ahead of the next lane and so on. The distance between starting points is determined by the length of the race and the size of the track. Starting blocks - Two blocks mounted on either side of an adjustable frame that provides a runner with a rigid surface against which to brace the feet at the start of a race. First used in Olympic competition at the 1948 London Games. Steeplechase - An obstacle race containing hurdles, water jumps, and other hazards. Tail wind - A wind traveling in the same direction as a runner or jumper. Take-off board - The spot before the foul line from which long jumpers and triple jumpers take off. The board is 4 feet long and 8 inches wide. Jumpers may step on, but not beyond, the board. Throwing circle - The circle from which a discus, shot put or hammer is thrown. The diameter of the circle is 7 feet for the shot put and hammer, and 8 feet, 2 1/2 inches for the discus. Toe board - A board, in the form of an arc, which the shot-putter must not step. Texas Stallions Track Club Parent Handbook, Rev 2/13. ©Copyright 2009 - 2013. All Rights Reserved. 30 | P a g e Trail leg- In the hurdling events, this is the second leg to come across the hurdle. The trail leg is bent at the knee. Trainers- These are the general all-purpose running shoes that athletes wear for warming up and less intense training sessions when spikes are not needed. They are heavier and provide more cushioning and support than spikes. Distance runners sometimes prefer to wear them in a half-size larger than their regular size to allow room for the feet to swell during longer distance runs. For most other athletes, their regular size for all of their non-athletic shoes should provide the right fit. Trial - An attempt in a field event. Triathlon - a combined track and field event that consists of 3 different events. Triple Jump - a track and field jumping event with three distinct phases to the jump including a hop, a step, and a jump. Walk - A race in which the athlete must have one foot on the ground at all times and the advancing leg must be straight.
