DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
From the President’s Office
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Another year has come and gone. We hope that you enjoy a restful summer,
and we look forward to a new and exciting year come August! To our current
Seniors and families who will be moving on: We thank you for the opportunity
to serve and partner with you in the education of your son(s). This is not a
goodbye. We want you to stay in touch, and we hope that you will come back
often to visit.
Mark DeMarco, ’78
Speaking of “not” goodbyes…

This year we bid farewell to our Principal, Brother Robert. He is a true
Brother in every sense of the word and to the vocation in which he was called.
It has been my privilege to work with him these past five years, for our administrative styles
complemented each other well. He has never let me down. He has always been extremely
professional, hard-working, and gracious with myself, parents, students, colleagues, and the extended
De La Salle family. He is one of the most well-read people I have ever known. He has a remarkably
brilliant mind and always brought creative new ideas to the team.

a loss to our school community. However, we were blessed to have the opportunity to work with him
and to have him as one of the school’s leaders.
Brother Robert, we wish you the very best in the future. I know that, whatever the future holds, you
will excel and continue to be successful. We will miss you, but this isn’t goodbye, as we know you will
keep in touch with this school and the entire De La Salle family here.
Thank you for the loyal and faithful service you have given to the De La Salle School Community.

DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL
From the Principal’s Office
Dear Parents, Students, Alumni, and Friends of De La Salle,
As we come to the end of the school year, I am reminded how blessed we are
as the De La Salle community. I never tire of sharing the notion that what
we are about as a school is nothing less than building young men into
becoming servants and leaders on behalf of a world sorely in need of those
who want to bring a kinder, more just, and compassionate face to the future.
Brother Robert J.
Wickman, F.S.C.
Isn't this why we continually remind ourselves that our Lasallian Mission on
Winton Drive is God’s work? Lasallian Catholic education is a gift that
Principal
doesn't just develop the intellect; it cooperates with God’s plentiful grace to
form people whose minds, hearts, and souls are oriented toward the needs of
others and the uplifting of all. The 2,000-year Gospel message of Jesus, and the vision of St. John
Baptist de La Salle lived now for over 335 years through the work of the Christian Brothers and
their Partners-In-Mission, creates a union with our students and their families that is
transformative and life giving.
Our society is under much stress and great challenge. Whether it be in the political, economic,
cultural, religious, or moral dimensions of life, challenge seems to be the central category through
which we encounter life in the 21st century. Challenge can only be met by a vision that calls for
faith and solidarity. I see the building up of the qualities of compassion, competence, and
character throughout society as essential to any vision that hopes to contribute to human
flourishing. We claim this vision as our own at De La Salle High School. When we act on this
vision with clarity, consistency, and credibility, then the promise of young men transformed takes
on energy and becomes reality.
The end of a school year gives us all an opportunity to reflect on how well we have shared in and
contributed to our partnership in Lasallian Mission. Not perfect, for sure, has been our work on
behalf of the young, but I believe faithfulness and authenticity have been key to our efforts. To
what have we been faithful? How have we been authentic? Our faithfulness is centered on
hearing God’s call, working with God’s grace, and acting to do His will. We are authentic to the
degree that we have been honest with each other, attentive to the demands of the mission
entrusted to us, and willing to serve as “works-in-progress,” flawed as we are, for the values and
witness our world needs for a future of hope and confidence.
The end of this school year is a particularly poignant one for me. As you know, I announced in
October that this would be my last year at De La Salle and also my last in school administration.
The Brothers have asked me to return home to the East Coast to take up new work in providing

oversight and support of the boards of trustees for the 20 schools we canonically sponsor. As I have
explained, getting ready to turn 65 next September has given me an opportunity to think through and
pray about how I might continue to contribute to the Lasallian Mission in realistic and sustainable
ways. The new work to which I have been assigned seems to be just the kind of service I might
perform for the next 8-10 years. While I will miss deeply the day-to-day rhythms of school life, I
know that it is time to have some “lighter duty” and serve in a different way. I ask for your prayers as
I make this transition.
I have had 13 wonderful years in California. While the New Yorker in me has
never gone away, I learned from you and the Brothers that “California
dreaming” is a nice complement to the “hustle and bustle” of life in the “Big
Apple.” For this chapter in my life, I will always be grateful.
“For this
chapter in my
life, I will
always be
grateful.”
My 9 years as Principal of De La Salle have shown me how great a school can
be. I have had the great privilege of serving with numerous administrators,
faculty, staff, and coaches who make real St. La Salle’s desire that we touch
the minds and hearts of the young. While a large and complex place, De La
Salle continues to have that “family spirit” as school and home live a vibrant
partnership. I will leave De La Salle in early July knowing that the good that has been our history for
50 years will continue to develop. In fact, I know that the best years for De La Salle lie ahead.
As I did in my October letter, I wish to again thank Mr. DeMarco for his trust in me and for the
many kindnesses he has extended as we worked closely to lead our school to fulfill its mission.
And, finally, thanks to each and every one of you for your commitment to the work of Lasallian
education in our little corner of Concord. Even when the days were long and the challenges great, the
light of friendship, solidarity, and trust burned brightly for me. I wish you well.
God Bless!

As we approach the end of the school year,
there are a number of items that you should be
aware of and that you should note on your
calendars:
AP TESTS begin on Monday, May 2. Please
check the calendar for the date of each AP
test, if your son is taking any AP classes this
year. Students are receiving final
information and preparation in their classes
for these exams. Students must be on time
and ready when the exam begins. Students
may choose to return to class or leave for
the day after the AP exam is completed for
the day.
ACADEMIC AWARDS will be presented on
Tuesday, May 24 at 7:00pm. We are looking
forward to this very special evening when
we honor students from the 9th-11th grades
for academic excellence in all subject areas
offered at De La Salle. You will receive an
invitation in the mail if your son is slated
to receive an award.
FINAL EXAMS are scheduled for May 27,
May 31, and June 1 for Freshmen,
Sophomores and Juniors. (See schedule on
the next page.) Students should plan ahead
to spend a reasonable amount of time
preparing for these exams. Activities should
be limited in the week or so before the
exams to give sufficient time for
preparation. If you have a concern about
your son’s standing in a class, please feel
free to contact your son’s teacher. I
encourage you to check your son’s academic
progress on PowerSchool at this time, as
well as over the next few weeks. Remember

FINAL GRADES: Final grades will be sent during the week of June 6. Students will be able to see their
final grades as well as final exam grades on PowerSchool as soon at they are posted. Grades are due
to the office on June 3. We will be closing down the parent/student portal for viewing during
final exams (beginning May 27) and until grades are posted on June 3 to allow the faculties
from both DLS and CHS appropriate time to get final assessments graded. Final Transcripts
for Seniors will be sent by the end of June.
2016-17 CLASS SCHEDULES will be visible on PowerSchool by mid-July. Final placement in Honors
and AP courses is determined by the respective departments based upon second semester grades
received in June. Letters of appeal for an honors course may be sent to Mrs. Mattos, who will forward
them to Department Chairs. Students have been adjusting their course selections with me since the
beginning of April, as has been needed. Changes to schedules for next year should be made
whenever possible by May 6. There will be very few changes made to student schedules after
that date. Since students had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with their Counselors, the classes
chosen should have been accurately and carefully chosen.

SUMMER SCHOOL IS REQUIRED for make-up of any semester F grades earned during this school
year. If your son is in danger of receiving an F for the second half of this year, take care of enrollment
in summer school NOW for any places offering summer school! Have your son see his Counselor
now regarding the course(s) and credits he needs to make up. He will also need to get an approval
signature on the concurrent enrollment form from me. Your local public school district offers VERY
LIMITED summer school courses in many areas, due to budget issues. DVC and LMC are also
options, but class choices are limited, and students need to see me to get a concurrent enrollment
form. There will be summer school available at both Bishop O’Dowd and Salesian High School.
Brochures are available for some of these programs at local sites, on the bulletin board outside the
Registrar’s Office, or from me directly. Our online summer school options may be the best choice for
most students. (See below.)
Students who earned D grades may wish to retake courses in summer school. Colleges and universities will
not accept D grades in entrance-required courses, i.e., core courses: English, Math, Social Studies,
Science, etc. Your son may also need to retake a course to meet prerequisites for a course he plans to
take next year. Please see the separate section about special online summer school make up
possibilities.
SUMMER SCHOOL ONLINE MAKE UP: Our Director of Online Learning, Mr. Donald Van
Bomel, has several venues and options available for online make-up courses. Please contact him
directly at (925) 288-8160 or [email protected] for more information about the options for
online course make-up. Students can also go see Mr. Van Bomel in the Student Services building on
the second floor to obtain information and direction. Please note that for Biology make-up, we will
have a summer class on campus, which will satisfy the UC/CSU requirement for lab sciences.

SENIOR ALERT/FINAL COLLEGE ADMISSION STEPS
HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT: You must send a final high school transcript to your chosen
college before your acceptance is final. Seniors must attend their College Advisory period during the
first week of May to complete this request and other tasks required to wrap-up their college admissions
process. (If you are later accepted from a waitlist and choose to go to that school, make arrangements
with Mrs. Szczepanski to have your final transcript sent to that school at that time.)
PLACEMENT EXAMS:
COMMUNITY COLLEGES-DVC MATH AND ENGLISH ASSESSMENT—Diablo Valley
College requires all entering students to take a Math and English assessment for placement and
advising purposes. Any student who plans to attend DVC in the fall of 2016, who did not take the
assessment in March at DLS, must make an appointment to take these assessments at DVC by
either calling 925-969-2132 or by going to http://www.dvc.edu/assessment. Information on steps
to enrollment at DVC is available in the College Center. Check individual college websites for
steps to take for other community colleges.
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA—Seniors who will attend a UC campus MUST take the
Analytical Writing Placement Exam on Saturday, May 14 (unless you have been exempted).
Students should have received information from UC about registering for the test. Students who
already meet any of the following criteria are exempt: a score of 3 or higher on an AP English
exam, at least 680 on the SAT Writing Test, or at least 30 on the ACT Combined English/Writing
test. See notification letters for testing locations; information is also available at http://
www.ucop.edu/elwr/
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY—Seniors who will attend a CSU campus MUST take the
ELM (math) test and the EPT (English Placement Test) at CSU East Bay (or another CSU campus
of choice) by May 7 to be sure that their enrollment at CSU is secure. If you have not registered
for this test date, you may be able to take it on a walk-in basis; check with the registration site to
learn about this possibility. Waiting to take the tests on a later date will jeopardize your enrollment
status at most CSU campuses. Check with the CSU you will attend for their specific policies. You
should have received information from your campus about registering for the tests. Students who
have scored at least 500 on the critical reading section of the SAT or 22 on the ACT English
section, and 550 on the math section of the SAT or 23 on the ACT math section are exempt.
Information on these placement tests is available at https://www.ets.org/csu/about.
PRIVATE AND OUT-OF-STATE COLLEGES—Students attending a private college or out-ofstate public school should check with their chosen college about placement tests that may be
required.
REGISTER FOR ORIENTATION, ACCEPT FINANCIAL AID OFFER, APPLY FOR
HOUSING—As you make plans to head off to college, remember to read and respond to everything
that your college sends you. Finalizing housing and financial arrangements, registering for orientation
(the sooner the better in most cases), and getting needed vaccinations, etc. are all an important part of
getting off to a successful start.
JUNIORS
Come to the East Bay College Fair at St. Mary’s on May 7, from 1-4 p.m., with workshops
beginning at 12:15pm. Representatives from over 150 colleges from throughout the U.S. will be there
and workshops about various aspects of the college admissions process will be offered. Be sure to register

ahead of time at www.stmarys-ca.edu/ebcc and print your badge so that colleges you’re interested in can

JUNIORS’ COUNTDOWN TO COLLEGE SUMMER “TO DO” LIST:
1. Research Colleges: Visit websites and check out reference books—Fiske Guide to Colleges, The Insider’s
Guide to Colleges, or the Best 377 Colleges from Princeton Review are recommended; these and others are
available for check out from the College Center or for purchase on Amazon or at your local bookstore.
Make use of Naviance to research and keep track of colleges, as well.
2. Create a College List: Begin to formulate a list of colleges to which you will want to apply. Consider
a variety of schools in regard to selectivity of admissions, keeping in mind that the admissions process
is very unpredictable, and it is important to have a number of options. Solid college choices that you
really like and have a strong chance of admission are more important than ever. Next fall the College
Counselors will meet with you to refine your list.
3. Visit colleges on your list that you haven’t seen yet. REMEMBER: It’s recommended that you visit
colleges during the summer to get a sense of the school, but if you’re interested, you will want to go
back again during the school year to get a true feeling of the atmosphere. Students who return to
DLS as Seniors without having visited schools will be severely behind in the college search
process.
4. Spend your summer productively! Work, volunteer, take a class, participate in a summer program,
or get an internship.
5. Write down your ideas and make an outline for your essay/personal statement; the UCs and most
private schools require at least one.
6. Develop a personal résumé – a list of school and community volunteer activities, leadership, work,
and honors and awards. This will make your college applications easier to fill out & save you time in
the fall. There is a link to a résumé builder on the “About Me” tab on Naviance.
7. Log into your Method Test Prep portal, from the link on your Naviance home page, to get extra
help preparing for SAT or ACT tests in the fall. This is a program that DLS has subscribed to and paid
for, in order to make test preparation available for all Juniors and Seniors. If you have forgotten your
username and/or password, stop by the College Center to retrieve it.
When you return in August, the College Counselors will begin the Senior College Advisory Program, which
will include a weekly group session for every Senior in order to work on the college application process.
SUMMER JOBS/PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS: Students looking for a summer job should check
out the Jobs Board outside the College Center or Schoology posts. There continues to be information
in the College Center and notices posted on the bulletin board outside the attendance office about precollege programs. Also check out the Summer Programs list on the Counseling page of the DLS
website (on a link on the page titled College Information for Juniors) and under Enrichment Programs
on the Colleges tab on Naviance.

Remember, students should take both the SAT and
the ACT. While the UC system no longer
requires SAT Subject Tests, some campuses
recommend them for some majors and highly
selective private colleges still require them.
Students should check with the Subject Test
policies of the colleges they are interested in and
may want to take 2 or 3 SAT Subject Tests of
their choice. Sophomores who are strong in
Biology may wish to take the SAT Biology
Subject test in June. This is the only SAT test
recommended for Sophomores. If students have
questions about registration for this test, they
may stop by the College Center.
A Note to DLS Parents of Incoming
Freshmen
Summer School for conditionally accepted
incoming freshmen only will begin July 11 and
end August 5. All students who are
conditionally accepted for the fall of 2016 are
required to attend. Keep this in mind as you
plan your summer vacation. Summer school
curriculum offers classes in English and Math,
with the Math class including a week of
instruction on science measurement and
process. If you have questions about summer
school, please contact Mr. Donald Van Bomel
Jr. at 925-288-8160.
ADVISING THE STUDENT-ATHLETE:
Students who are thinking of participating in
NCAA Division I or II athletics should start the
certification process by the end of their Junior
year. Interested students may apply online at
www.eligibilitycenter.org. Be sure to request a
transcript to be sent to the NCAA through
Naviance. If you have questions about how to
do this, stop by the College Center. SAT or ACT
test scores must also be reported to the NCAA,
directly from Collegeboard or ACT. Once the
Eligibility Center receives the scores and
transcript, it begins the certification process,
which is completed when the student graduates
from high school. A minimum GPA and test
score are required in order to play college sports.

While the close of the school year may be coming
into sight, and even with all the hustle and bustle of
May, a De La Salle education and all the activities
experienced throughout the year would not be
possible without parental support of the De La Salle
Annual Fund. Gifts to the Annual Fund allow our
school to create and expand learning opportunities
through enhancements to the classrooms, upgraded
technology, increased professional development
opportunities for our faculty, and financial assistance
for families in need, all while working to keep tuition
increases to a minimum.
TELEPHONE MESSAGES
Classroom instruction will not be interrupted
to deliver messages to students. Make all
arrangements with your student for after
school activities, transportation, appointments,
etc., before the school day.

ATHLETICS
Pass to Play at Muir Orthopaedics
De La Salle Sports Medicine encourages all
athletes to attend the Muir Orthopaedic
Specialists Pass to Play event Saturday, July
30 from 9:00-3:00. The physicals will consist
of orthopaedic, neurocognitive and cardiac
evaluations. The cardiac portion is a new
component for the event and individuals will
have an EKG, review of personal and family
history with a physician and an
echocardiogram (if needed) all on the same
day. This addition enables the physicians to
rule out any abnormalities, which may not be
seen from routine exams.

RETREAT REGISTRATION: Sophomores, Juniors and their parents are encouraged to take
advantage of the early registration opportunity for Junior retreat and Senior Kairos retreats for the
2016-17 school year. Junior Retreat is an overnight retreat focusing on Christian values and the
journey of becoming a Man of Faith. Kairos is a four-day, three-night experience challenging Seniors
to integrate their faith into their relationships with God, others and themselves. Through open and
honest sharing in small groups, the “Spartan Brotherhood” is strengthened and solidified.
These retreats fill up very quickly. We strongly encourage students to register now for these two retreats
to ensure that they get the retreat date that best fits their schedule. Contact Ms. Nadine Ghammache
to register (925-288-8185; [email protected]). A $50 deposit is due to hold a spot. Financial
assistance is available.
Registration is also open for our Father/Son Retreat – November 12-14, 2016 and Parent (either Mom or
Dad)/Son retreat – February 4-5, 2017. These retreats give parents and sons a great opportunity for
quality time together and to truly appreciate and celebrate the parent-son relationship. The cost for the
weekend is $250.00, and financial assistance is available.
Our Baccalaureate Liturgy for Seniors and their families will take place in the Hofmann Student Center
at 6:00pm on Friday, May 20. Students are to wear liturgy attire and sit with their families.
Our Kairos End-of-the-Year Breakfast for all Seniors who attended Kairos this year will be held on
Saturday, May 21 at 9am in the gym (prior to graduation practice at 11am). Kairos participants must
RSVP in the Campus Ministry Office by Monday, May 15.

Graduation Party Supplies: Stock up early on party supplies for your graduation
party! We carry DLS plates, napkins, balloons, signs, banners, etc. We also
offer a ribbon lei that the boys can wear after the ceremony. These items run
out quickly, so don’t delay!
Graduation Gifts: Speaking of graduation, we have the perfect gifts for graduation!
A poster or flag would be perfect for their dorm wall at college. Or perhaps a
blanket for their bed! A desktop crystal cube with an etched Spartan head or a
De La Salle Spartans necktie would make nice gifts, as well!
Mother’s Day: Celebrate mom with our brand new Mom t-shirt! Many
other great items such as jewelry are available for moms so shop early.
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8!
Book Return:
As the school year comes to an end, it is time for our students to be
accountable for their textbooks. All textbooks must be returned
immediately after finals.
Seniors must return or pay for lost/damaged books by Thursday, May
19 to receive their graduation tickets.
Diplomas and/or transcripts may be held if book accounts are outstanding.
Underclassmen must return or pay for lost/damaged books by Wednesday, June 8 - no returned books
will be accepted after that time – you own them - and will be billed accordingly.
A few other reminders:
1. Book accession numbers must match the student’s name in the system.
(Simply having a student’s name written inside, does not indicate that book was assigned to them.)
2. All books distributed to students are the property of DLS High School. Do not return any
books to CHS.
3. All books must be returned clean (no pencil/pen marks or papers left in the books).
4. Books that are left in the locker room, classroom, or garbage bins cannot be scanned!
5. Books that are not returned OR returned with any ink, highlighter or damage will be charged
accordingly.
Please call the Bookstore at (925) 288-8127 if you have any questions regarding return of
textbooks.
Book Distribution 2016-17:
It is mandatory that students come to collect their textbooks in the Hofmann Center on one of the
following days/times. Students must pick up their own books. Freshman parents are welcome to accompany

INFORMATION UPDATES AND
SUMMER MAILING
INFORMATION UPDATES & AGREEMENTS:
As you may recall, DLS requires ALL parents and guardians to update the data we have on
file for each student. This ensures that we have the most current information available
before they attend school in August. This “Information Updates & Agreements” process
includes reviewing data, contact information, and other agreements that parents must
acknowledge before their son can begin school. This is mandatory for all families;
parents and guardians must complete this process before their son starts school.
The deadline is Monday, August 1, 2016 by 3pm.
The information will be available online.
SUMMER MAILING:
Every July, we send parents a packet of information related to back-to-school activities— a
“summer packet” mailed to you in the middle of July. This year, instead of mailing you the
hard packets, we will have all of the information that we normally mail to you—including
the forms that require a response from you—available on our website. Having the material
available online will give you instant access to information, regardless of where you might
have put your packet. For those of you who prefer paper copies or who do not have a
computer, we will have a limited number of packets available for you to pick up at the
Main Office. (We are not mailing any packets this year.)
We will be sending you a postcard with additional information about how to access this
information on or about June 15. We will also email and call you to let you know when the
information is available—for the summer “packet” and the aforementioned Information
Updates & Agreement process starting in July.
Keep your eye on your mail starting mid-June for the postcard!

For the past few years, De La Salle High School has operated in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
environment, with students using laptops, tablets, and smartphones in their academic classes.
Beginning with the class of 2019, De La Salle has transitioned to a Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL)
environment, which will continue with our incoming Class of 2020. Next year, students in grades 11 12 will continue with the BYOD model; devices are recommended but not mandated. For students
taking classes at Carondelet High School, a device is highly recommended.
Please check out the our Parent Technology Resource page at the De La Salle website:
http://www.dlshs.org/parents/parent_technology_resources/index.aspx.. You’ll find updated
information about technology at DLS and resources/articles for helping your son manage technology
and academics. This year I was excited to present to our parent community at two evening events.
Parent education on managing technology with your son will continue next year, as well.

For the last year and a half, De La Salle parents,
students, and faculty took part in a survey with
BrightBytes, an educational research
organization, in order to learn more about our
students' school and home technology use for
learning. For that reason, we are again reaching
out to ask you to take part in the CASE
questionnaire. The CASE framework looks at
success indicators for technology use in four
domains: Classroom; Access; Skills; and
Environment. Your participation is essential in
helping us form a more complete picture of
technology use for learning in your students'
lives. Please know that all of your responses will
remain anonymous to protect your privacy. A
comprehensive report on the survey findings will
be shared once we have completed our study.
