Yr5 Summer Term Newsletter 2013 – 2nd Half Dear Parents and Carers, We hope you all had a fun and relaxing half term break. Our final half term in year five is packed with exciting opportunities and our major project is ‘The Circle of Life.’ Equality Week Our first week back after half term was Equality Week. This provided an opportunity for the whole school to: celebrate people’s differences; think about breaking down stereotypes and to focus on what people CAN do, rather than what they can’t. The week was a great success. The children participated in some Paralympic sports, completed day-to-day tasks whilst wearing goggles which simulated a variety of visual impairments and a question and answer session with Mr Nash. The Highwayman We will finish the year by looking at Alfred Noyes’ poem ‘The Highwayman.’ Children will explore the poem through drama and we will explore the use of figurative language. (Similes, metaphors etc.) Maths Maths will continue each day, taught in two sets. Mrs Thompson and Mrs Brookes’ set will focus on probability, triangles and algebra. Miss Mills’ set will be looking at number patterns and calculating averages. They will also be revisiting written methods for division and consolidating their understanding of inverse operations. Blogging Year Five have just begun to add blogs to our school website. We hope you will be able to have a look and will enjoying reading them. The Circle of Life For our Brilliant Beginning, the Year 5 classrooms will be transformed into an art studio come florist! Children will be given time to appreciate, explore and compare a wide variety of plant life, making detailed sketches of them to ensure careful observation. Our Core value for this project will be Aspiration and our powerful learning attribute will be problem solving. We will revisit and then continue our work on Peer Mediation: How can we solve problems and help others to solve conflicts? Children will be learning about the parts of a flower and plant reproduction. Having practiced explanatory writing, they will then be able to write about their learning. Children will move on to learn about changes during puberty and will begin to discuss adult sexual relationships. PSHE lessons will explore how to deal with embarrassment and how to cope with change. You will be notified via your child’s homework diary as to when DVD programmes relating to this project will be shown. Children will be given options and choice about their Fantastic Finale. They will be sharing their learning about the importance of bees with Year One. Whether they choose to do this through a story, through drama, through art, or using Velcro and tennis balls (collecting pollen which sticks to their bodies) will be entirely up to them! We’ll be checking numbers for the BSO trip in July and confirming with those of you who offered to come along with us. Finally, we would like you to remind children that any school property, including borrowed PE kit and Michael Morpurgo books, must be returned to school as soon as possible. Let’s hope the sun shines for our final half term! Yours sincerely, Mrs Brookes, Miss Mills, Mrs Thompson, Mr Nash and Mrs Crouch.
