Context: Since 1927 (Charles Lindbergh), Time Magazine has published its “Person of the Year.” Each year, the
honor is granted for a different reason. Sometimes the portrayal is negative and sometimes it’s positive; each time,
the selection is based on world events. In 2011, Time assigned the honor to a type of person – rather than an
individual (the Protestor).
Below are examples and excerpts from Time Magazine’s Man/Person of the year. Read at least three.
Prewriting: As you read, highlight/take notes that answer the following questions:

What does the magazine cover say about the individual? (A positive or negative portrayal?)
•
Why was this person chosen? (Use the quote provided as a guide.)
•
Which specific characteristics led this person to becoming Person of the Year (POY)?
•
Can multiple POYs be grouped together? How? Why?
In a single complete essay, in DBQ format, please address the question:
What does it take to be person of the year?

Have a clear, complete thesis which answers the question and provides thorough support from Time.

Analyze, in detail, these documents and/or the historical implications of this era.

Groups of people/types: Discuss similarities between individuals/types. Why were they chosen?
