A One-Week
Experience
for Students
in Grades 2-8
A prerequisite for attendance is a letter of recommendation (on the
enclosed form) from school personnel (G/T Coordinator, Guidance
Counselor, teacher) stating that the student will benefit from the program
in one of the following areas:
Academic
* Achievement test scores
demonstrate performance
higher than grade level
 Student potential
Arts
* Student product
* Student potential
For more information, please contact your school’s G/T Coordinator.
Participants’ course choices are assigned on a first-come, first-served
basis, according to the date the application and deposit are received.
Students may attend the morning, afternoon, or both sessions.
The experiences are designed to allow the student an opportunity to explore a chosen
topic in depth. Parents are encouraged to let their child make the choice of activity (as
fits with the teacher’s recommendation). There are no tests or grades, and the settings
are meant to be informal work or laboratory sessions. The interaction between staff,
professional educators and curious, eager young minds adds excitement to the sessions.
Students should select courses based on their grade level during the 2016-17 school year.

and integrate the talents, skills and creativity of each individual participant.

Why It Happens!

We will take a look at science experiments that have to do with
the water cycle and weather! The
week will be filled with the how
and why of weather.

Garrison
Let’s journey into the colorful word
of Eric Carle, author of the Very Caterpillar and many other wonderful
children’s books. We will create our
own magical creations using color
and imagination.

Magic Kingdom Creations – Olivia Garrison
All you need is faith, trust, and pixie dust as
we explore the wonders of Walt Disney
World’s the Magic Kingdon! Come along as
we spend the week adventuring through Fantasyland with Peter Pan, fighting through Tomorrowland with Buzz Lightyear, and soaring
on our magic carpets through Adventureland
with Aladdin and Jasmine! Who wouldn’t
want to spend the week at the most magical
place on earth?
Seuss Takes the Stage – Angela Kelley
Kids will learn about Dr. Seuss’ life and
explore his writing style. They will write a
book, make a back drop and costumes and
even perform!

Do you like to think “out of the box”? Work
with a small group to creatively solve scientifically-based challenges through the week
that can showcase your building skills, artistic
abilities and a little bit of acting. You will play
team-building games and problem solve instant challenges that will keep you thinking
and creating.
Fantastic Forensics – Lisa Dow
Have you ever wanted to become a CSI?
Come join the team to solve the mysteries
of the crime scene. You will learn the techniques used by forensics teams.

Travel around the world and indulge in
different food, art and education across
many cultures. This course will focus on all
parts of the world and will employ activities
such as cooking and arts and crafts to help
young explorers discover what is happening
around the globe.
Mini Musical Mania: Aladdin (Backstage)

Do you want to join us on a magic carpet
ride with Jasmine, Aladdin, and Jafar? This
summer, Project Explore’s Mini Musical
Mania is going to put a spell on the audience
with our version of Disney’s Aladdin! *It is
recommended you attend both sessions for
the full theater experience.

ALS stands for American Sign Language. ASL
is a beautiful hands on language that uses
facial expressions and specific hand movements to create meaning through signs and
fingerspelling. This course will touch on the
history of ASL, applications, job opportunities, and time spent signing!

the witches from the Wizard of Oz
(Onstage) – Amy Billings
North? East? West? Which witch is wicked??? Join us this summer in Mini Musical
Mania to explore the story of Wicked. We
will use script, music, and movement to tell
our version of this story to our audience.
Students will practice theater skills such as
blocking, memorization of lines and learning
to project for an audience. Come join the
fun!! *It is recommended you attend both
sessions for the full theater experience.
Settlers of Catan – Chelsea Cheney
Join the game! Settlers of Catan is an incredibly fun and strategic board game in which
players expand their empires by building
roads, settlements, and cities. Tilt probability
in your favor, embark on trade negotiations
with other players, and work your analytical
and systems thinking skills. (All while scheming to cut off or destroy others’ empires.
Muahahahaha!!!)
A Time To Escape – Mary Graham
Escape room is a new type of game. Want to
know how it works? What goes into creating
an escape room that will attract people to
enter and find out how to escape? Come and
we will create an escape room of our own
and then test it to be sure it has the right
amount of mystery to keep it interesting and
yet allows you to find your way out.

at different book each day (in restaurant
style) and do an activity with that story. In
addition, we will do a bit of story book surgery where we will dissect the story to see
what it’s about. If you love books, this is the
class for you!
Bead Bonanza – Erika Bernard
Are you interested in creating your own art? In
this course we will be using handmade and
other beads to create keychains, jewelry, wind
chimes, or anything else you can think of!
Make a gift for yourself, a friend,
or a loved one!
Everyday Science – Olivia Garrison
What better way could you spend your day
than by making things glow in the dark? Join
us for this course as we tackle fun and interesting science experiments! Our experiments will involve things we use everyday,
such as making floating soap. You don’t
want to miss out on this exciting week!
Cruising Through the Week

Students dive into the cruise life of a child by
studying various places, mapping out their
trip, making towel animals and island food,
and playing cruise ship games.
Digi-Blocks – Nancy Watson
All aboard the Digi-block train!! Pack and unpack Digi-blocks to add, subtract, multiply,
divide, slide count, estimate, explore area,
perimeter and decimals! Digi-block trains
cement number sense in fun visual ways.

Let’s Get Out of the Box – Valerie Black
A mini version of Destination Imagination. The
class will explore the building properties of
common objects and use these explorations to
problem solve instant challenges. Team building skills will add to the fun in working as a
group to discover creative solutions.
Chemical Reactions – Lisa Dow
Safety goggles...check… Solutions…check…
Chemical concoctions...check. We will light the
fire of curiosity as we use chemical reactions
as the force behind a "rocket". We will use
sodium borate to experiment with the different properties of polymers, demonstrate the
properties behind dextrose chemical reactions, and so much more! You will become
actual Scientists and Chemists, using real lab
equipment to have fun with experiments.

Have some fiber fun with this string art project! In this class you’ll paint or stain pine
boards, add nails in a design you choose, and
string colorful thread around the nails to create a finished project. By the end of the week
you’ll be taking home several unique pieces of
art to keep or give to family and friends!
The Labyrinth – Mary Graham
Throughout Greek and Roman Mythology the
labyrinth has always been a fascinating maze
requiring higher level thinking skills and logic
necessary to find your way. In this workshop
you will learn about the inner workings of
mythological labyrinths and then create one of
your own.
Pro vs. Con Debate – Halina Herzog
This class will explore the art of debate. We
will learn all the techniques of building a solid argument and then we will debate.
Nifty Neurons: Learning about the Brain
and Debunking Myths – Marta Herzog
Have you ever heard that there are as many
cells in the brain as stars in the universe? Put
on your lab coats and learn more about the
amazing brain. This course will consist of various interactive activities that will focus on
learning and debunking myths focused on
current and previous topics in neuroscience
and psychology.
Mini Musical Mania: Wicked: The Story of
the Witches from The Wizard Of Oz
(Backstage) – Lori Hudson
Lots of work goes on behind the scenes of a
production! In the class, we will do the preparation necessary to put on our performance
at the end of the week. Students will help
create a set and costumes for Wicked. Bring
your paint clothes and your creativity to
class! *It is recommended you attend both
sessions for the full theater experience.
