Living with Michael Jackson
Timberlake, Usher and
Bieber are just a few
of today’s stars still
repurposing the King of Pop
Four years after the tragic death of
global superstar and troubled singer
Michael Jackson, it’s hard to say if
anyone has truly claimed his throne as
King of Pop. But that hasn’t stopped
today’s music stars from trying.
Jackson’s aesthetic – the epic music
videos, the thrilling dance sequences,
the glittery gloves – continue
to manifest themselves in the
performances of today’s stars. Here
is how Justin Timberlake, Usher and
Justin Bieber still borrow from MJ.
Justin Timberlake
The music video was still in its infancy
when Michael Jackson released the
video for “Thriller” in late 1983. The
14-minute masterpiece set the standard
for the platform, taking on a narrative
framework and production values at the
time reserved for feature films. (There
was even a special theatrical screening
of “Thriller” so it would be eligible for the
Academy Awards.) Costing $800,000, a
budget unheard of at the time, it was
more ambitious than any other music
video before it. No wonder MTV chose it
as its first world premiere music video.
Michael Jackson Died
4 Years Ago, But His
Aesthetic Lives On
Justin Bieber
Every precious child star has to grow up
eventually. Jackson was just 5 years old
when he got his start as lead singer of the
Jackson Five, Once he broke off into a solo
career, his videos got edgier as he asserted
himself as a full-grown adult. In 1983’s
video for “Billie Jean,” Jackson danced
around a gritty, street scene as he is trailed
by the paparazzo and the cops.
Usher
Usher loves to borrow from Michael
Jackson, from his outfits to his dance moves
– moon walk included. His video for “Yeah”
is also a clear modern-day riff on a Michael
Jackson classic.
Usher may be in the club, but that shot of
his silhouette in front of flashing green laser
lights is straight from Jackson’s 1979 video
for disco hit “Rock With You.”

Moonwalk
Author: Michael Jackson
Description
The #1 New York Times bestseller! Michael Jackson’s one and only
autobiography – his life, in his words.
With original Foreword by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a new Introduction
by Motown founder Berry Gordy, and an Afterword by Michael Jackson’s
editor and publisher, Shaye Areheart.
“I’ve always wanted to be able to tell stories, you know, stories that came
from my soul. I’d like to sit by a fire and tell people stories – make them see
pictures, make them cry and laugh, take them anywhere emotionally with
something as deceptively simple as words. I’d like to tell tales to move their
souls and transform them. I’ve always wanted to be able to do that. Imagine
how the great writers must feel, knowing they have that power. I sometimes
feel I could do it. It’s something I’d like to develop. In a way, songwriting
uses the same skills, creates the emotional highs and lows, but the story
is a sketch. It’s quicksilver. There are very few books written on the art of
storytelling, how to grip listeners, how to get a group of people together
and amuse them. No costumes, no makeup, no nothing, just you and your
voice, and your powerful ability to take them anywhere, to transform their
lives, if only for minutes.”

Rather than featuring one continuous narrative, the film is a collection of short films
about Jackson, several of which are long-form music videos from Jackson’s Bad album.
The film is named after the dance technique known as the moonwalk, which was one
of his trademark moves. The name of the dance move was dubbed by the media, not by
Jackson himself; however, he did choose the title of the film himself. Moonwalker was a
success at the box office, making a total of $67,000,000 worldwide.

Billie Jean (English lyrics) fragment
She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene
I said don’t mind, but what do you mean I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
She said I am the one, who will dance on the floor in the round
She told me her name was Billie Jean, as she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
People always told me be careful of what you do
And don’t go around breaking young girls’ hearts
And mother always told me be careful of who you love
And be careful of what you do ‘cause the lie becomes the truth
Billie Jean is not my lover
She’s just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son
For forty days and for forty nights
The law was on her side
But who can stand when she’s in demand
Her schemes and plans
‘Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice
(Do think twice)

Michael Jackson (1982)

Thriller (1982). It was written and
composed by Michael Jackson and
produced by him and Quincy Jones. Originally disliked by Jones, the track was almost
removed from the album after he and Jackson had disagreements regarding it. There
are contradictory claims to what the song’s lyrics refer to. One suggests that they are
derived from a real-life experience, in which a female fan claimed that Jackson had
fathered one of her twins. Jackson himself, however, stated that “Billie Jean” was based
on groupies he had encountered. The song is well known for its distinctive bassline
and Jackson’s vocal hiccups. The song was mixed 91 times by audio engineer Bruce
Swedien before it was finalized.
Y mi madre siempre me dijo: “Vigila a quién amas

Awarded numerous honors the song and corresponding music video propelled Thriller
to the status of best-selling album of all time. The song was promoted with a short
film that broke down MTV’s racial barrier as the first video by a black artist to be aired
in heavy rotation. Also, Jackson’s Emmy-nominated performance on Motown 25:
Yesterday, Today, Forever, in which Jackson premiered his “moonwalk” also helped to
popularize the song. The song was also promoted through Jackson’s Pepsi commercials;
during the filming of one commercial, Jackson’s scalp was severely burned. Covered by
modern artists, “Billie Jean” sealed Jackson’s status as an international pop icon.
Living with Michael Jackson
Living with Michael Jackson is a documentary, in which
British journalist Martin Bashir interviewed Michael Jackson
over a span of 8 months, from May 2002 to January 2003. It
was shown first in the UK on 3 February 2003 and in the US
three days later on ABC, introduced by Barbara Walters.
Martin Bashir put the proposal to Jackson as a way to show
the world the truth about him and make nothing off limits. Jacksons decision to
make the documentary was made on the suggestion by his close friend Uri Geller.
It later emerged that Geller had turned down another bid for the interview by
journalist Louis Theroux. The interview was very unusual, as it had been extremely
rare for Jackson to allow such access to his personal life, or to talk so freely about his
traumatic childhood. Nevertheless, he did show some reserve when asked to discuss
other personal issues, such as the plastic surgery he has had.
Jackson felt betrayed by Bashir and complained that the film gives a distorted picture
of his behaviour and conduct as a father. He claims that Bashir, in the final version of
his interview, used only that material which supported Bashirs opinion of Jackson,
which was not a favorable one.
Jackson filed complaints with the UKs Independent Television Commission and the
Broadcasting Standards Commission.
Jacksons lawyers claimed in a British High Court case against Martin Bashir and
Granada TV that the documentary was a breach of contract and breach of confidence.
The proceedings were put on hold when Jackson was charged with 10 felony counts
in late 2003, but the proceedings could continue after since Jacksons acquittal.
However this is unlikely following his
death.
Ann Kite, a public relations consultant
hired by Jacksons advisers to
counter negative publicity, called the
documentary a PR-disaster.
