Before You Read
Before you read the chapter, respond to these statements. Accept all reasonable responses.
1. Write an A if you agree with the statement.
2. Write a D if you disagree with the statement.

Chemistry in Biology
• Atoms are the smallest particles in
matter.
After You Read
D because subatomic particles
PNe- = protons, neutrons
and
D
electrons are smaller than atoms.
• Chemical reactions occur constantly
inside your body.
• About 70 percent of your body is water.

Consider the characteristics of a living and a nonliving thing. Describe a few ways that the
two are alike and a few ways that the two are different.
Living Things have these characteristics:
Non-living things:
1. Made of cells - cell theory
2. Carbon based - organic
3. These three important parts .
*cell membrane (protection)
*DNA (genetic identity)
*ribosomes (for making proteins)
4. Absorbs energy from it's environment
5. Able to grow, change or mutate.
6. Possibility of death or to go extinct
1. Rocks are good examples
Accept all reasonable responses.
2. They Lack the characteristics of life mentioned earlier.
3. A Virus has many characteristics of life,
but it lacks ribosomes and cannot make it's own proteins.
Therefore it is NOT a living thing and it must hijack a cells
ribosomes to multiply.
4. With artificial intelligence, robots may someday
"come to life"
