EMILY DICKINSON
The American poet, Emily Dickinson, was born December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, the daughter of
a prominent lawyer and granddaughter of one of the founders of Amherst College.
In later years she became an eccentric recluse, withdrawing from society into the seclusion of her father’s house.
It wasn’t until after her death in 1886 that her poetry really became known to the world. She called her poems
her “letters to the world,” and with great secrecy dedicated her life to writing them.
It is remarkable that someone so reclusive wrote about the universal subjects of love, nature, life, and
immortality. Her poems, few possessing any title, are filled with great originality, imagination, and a deep
spirituality of nature.
