This is a high interest, motivational reading program that incorporates computerized
instruction/skill development, direct instruction and video. The success of the program is built upon the focus of the individual student’s need. This program has proven results to increase student’s reading levels by as much as two grade levels a year.

This twelve week reading class seeks to explore the “old” heroes and their stories and
journeys that still live on in the culture today. Odysseus, Jason, Beowulf, and King
Arthur are heroes whose stories provide opportunities for students to address comprehension and vocabulary skills while also pondering the characteristics of a hero.
Math Strategies 8
Students needing additional resources will be pre-registered for this course
by administration.
This course will guide students who are behind in math to become more accurate and
efficient in math operations. Students will spend time working on adding, subtracting,
multiplying and dividing with whole numbers. Different strategies will be taught and
practiced to increase proficiency in these four math operations.
Band
Eighth grade band is for students who have had two or three years of concert band
prior to registration. Band will meet every day, and will perform four formal concerts
during the months of December, February, March and May. Students who are in choir
will alternate every other day with band. Students who have not had a beginning
band experience will need to find lessons outside of school BEFORE joining 8th grade
band.
Choir
In this course, students will have the opportunity to develop their individual voices, to
strengthen and deepen their knowledge of music, and to think and act as contributing
members to the overall success of a large-group ensemble. Students will rehearse
and perform music of many different styles and cultures. As students progress from
grade to grade in the choral program, they will learn many essential skills beyond
singing.

Students will study design, modeling and robotics. Students will be studying robotics and
automation using Fischertechniks. The students will be using Inventor Cadd software to
create their robotic arms.
High Potential—Science Discovery
Students will construct experiments to solve problem scenarios using inquiry skills. They
will use technical writing skills to document their methods and report their findings. In
addition, students will work toward designing their own scenario using the scientific
method with an emphasis on documenting findings and drawing conclusions.
High Potential—Passport to Spain
Broaden your knowledge and examine your perspective of the Spanish-speaking cultures
of Spain and Latin America through the Spanish language, literature, music, dance, food,
film, religions, customs, people, poverty and art.
RH Option 1
Explore Life
Students will combine various components of physical education, art and media. They will
discover ways to enhance their future through physical health and nutrition. They will also
be using media to document their results in multiple formats such as photo, audio, video
and graphics. The intent of this class is to practice, promote, and analyze positive life-long
choices.
Consuming and Conserving Energy
Students will study several aspects of energy and water consumption and how to conserve both. Students will also be looking at events that are happening (natural and manmade) and how they can better the environment.
Fit 4 Life
Students will learn to appreciate the importance of being physically active throughout
their lives, learn how to set appropriate goals to reach their desired level of fitness, participate in regular aerobic activities, weight training, cardiovascular games and classroom
lessons. Emphasis will be placed on increasing muscular strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, healthy eating habits and maintaining a healthy body composition or body
mass index.

Techie Teens
Students will explore different computer programs utilized within our Project Phoenix
classrooms. They will also provide technical assistance to classes that have implemented
Project Phoenix, as well as research and recommend additional options to be used in
future Project Phoenix classrooms. Come be a part of our school’s future in technology!
History Stories
This course will examine U.S. history after the Civil War with a particular focus on Reconstruction and the Civil Rights movements in the 1950’s and 60’s. Students will learn about
this time period through engaging historical novels. Daily vocabulary will also be a focus.
Students will also create a video using Movie Maker that relates to a topic that will be
covered in their regular U.S. history class.
