RESILIENCE: Strengthening the efficiency and security of energy networks
http://resilience.euporias.eu
ABOUT
Overview: RESILIENCE examines wind energy production on a seasonal time-scale. The prototype provides robust
information of the future variability in wind power resources based on probabilistic climate predictions. It gives the
likelihood of wind speed falling in the upcoming months in each of the following three categories: normal wind (average
level of wind speed for the region), below normal wind (low wind speed for what is usual in the region) and above normal
wind speed (high wind speed for what is usual in the region). The objective is to raise awareness of recent advances in
seasonal climate predictions, while developing a tool that addresses the needs of specific users and provides effective
solutions to visualizing probabilistic information.
Focused sectors: Renewable energy
Prototype producers: Barcelona Supercomputing Center
Main stakeholders: EDF Energy; Vortex; EDP Renewables; EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG
BENEFITS
Information provided by seasonal wind predictions can potentially benefit multiple user profiles in the wind energy
sector, from operations and maintenance teams to grid operators and energy traders.
OUTCOMES
Information tailored to the needs of the energy sector is obtained after post-processing and calibration of wind data.
Probabilistic predictions are graphically represented in a way that is both readable and engaging by users. The most
visible output is the visualization tool Project Ukko, accessible in www.project-ukko.net. It consists of a global map with
a data overlay designed to enable viewers to quickly spot global patterns and trends in future wind conditions, and then
drill into detailed prediction breakdowns on a regional level.
EUPORIAS was funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under Grant Agreement 308291.
