OLD LOG THEATRE – “THE JUNGLE BOOK”
Join us as we visit the Old Log Theater for a
production of “The Jungle
Book.” “The Jungle Book”
is a story of a young boy
lost in the jungles of India,
raised by a pack of wolves,
befriended by the lovable Baloo and protected
by the noble black panther, Bagheera. These
loving animals accept and raise the human child
as one of their own, but not all is peaceful in the
jungle. Shere Kahn, the tiger, and Kaa, the
python, have vowed to destroy Mowgli and be
rid of humans forever.

TRAVELOGUE – IN SEARCH OF RIO’S
OLYMPIC GOLD
Did you know that Portuguese sailors entered
Guanabara Bay on January 1, 1502? They
named the site Rio de Janeiro, which means
“River of January.” Rio de Janeiro is the site for
the upcoming Summer Olympics.
The 2016 Summer Olympics will
be the first ever Olympics hosted
by a South American or
Portuguese-speaking country.
During the 17 days of the
Olympic Games, some 10,500
athletes from 206 countries will be participating
in 306 different events. The Summer Olympics
take place on this date, August 5th and run
through August 21st. GO USA!
Let’s discover more about this city, Rio, and the
country of Brazil. Here are some interesting
facts about Rio and Brazil: Rio de Janeiro has
an estimated population of 6.35 million people.
The climate is subtropical and delightful,
temperatures ranging from 65 degrees to 86
degrees. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the
world in area; it covers about half of the entire
continent of South America. If you like coffee,
Brazil is the place to get some; it is the world’s
largest coffee producer. Lastly, Brazilians
consume large quantities of rice. Almost every
day they eat rice at least once a day, often twice,
usually with beans.

OLYMPIC CARD GAME
Let the games begin! The Olympic
cards include 5 ring cards, 3 medal
cards (gold, silver, and bronze), and a torch
“wild” card. The object of the game is to be the
first player to collect all 5 colors of Olympic rings
or a gold, silver, bronze medal and 2 different
colors of Olympic rings. Remember, the torch
“wild” card can be any card the player wants.
Once this happens, the player yells, “Olympics”
and shows his hand.

OLYMPIC GAMES BINGO
Everyone can “go for the gold” while playing
their favorite game this month. Let the games
begin! A deck of calling cards includes all 32
sports, but each card will
only have 16 of the 32
sporting events. Also,
there is a gold medal behind one of the sporting
events on each card as a bonus free spot. We’ll
have some special Olympic prizes to give away
to all the winners!

FAMOUS LEFT-HANDERS
Did you know that International Left-Handers
Day is August 13th? Are any of you lefthanded? There’s no denying it. Left-Handers
are the odd men out. Sure, lefties make up
about 10% of the population – but, frankly, it
seems like society has forgotten about them.
What causes someone to become a southpaw,
left-handed? Scientists aren’t exactly sure, but
research points to a complex collaboration
between genes and environment. See what
famous people are left-handed as we play a
wheel of fortune.

ICE CREAM CONE PIN
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice
cream! Let’s make an ice cream cone pin! We’ll
use light brown, dark brown, and pink craft foam,
along with a red pompom to make a yummy
looking pin to wear.

PLANTS & ANIMALS:
THE CACTUS
Whether the word cactus brings to
mind a towering, multi-armed
saguaro growing wild in the desert or its more
diminutive relative in a flowerpot basking on a
sunny city windowsill, the cactus is a fascinating
and unique plant. At one time or another, most
people have owned a cactus plant as a
houseplant and enjoyed its relatively low
maintenance needs. In this program, you will
learn about different kinds of cacti, some
interesting trivia, growing tips, and a surprising
dining option.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH – “CASABLANCA”
Today would have been Ingrid Bergman’s
birthday, so let’s celebrate by watching one of her
most well-known movies, “Casablanca.” In World
War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine, exiled American
and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular
nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf, Blaine,
comes into the possession of two valuable letters
of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in
Casablanca, the sycophantic Police Captain
Renault does what he can to please him, including
detaining a Czechoslovak
underground leader, Victor Lazslo.
Much to Rick’s surprise, Lazslo

HONEY BEE DAY
August 20th is World Honey Bee Day, a time to
focus on all the positive contributions the honey
bee has to offer. Oh the humble
honey bee! It pollinates plants and
crops, and it produces sweet
honey to enjoy by itself or in
baked goods. However, that
same bee can give quite a sting when
provoked! Did you know that honey bees pollinate
an estimated one-third of all the food crops we
consume? Let’s discover more about the amazing
honey bee!
