OUR MISSION:
The question then becomes: Why? Why would it be
important to shock yourself back to reality each year
(or more often as needed)? The reason is we have a
tendency to forget. We love and mean our wedding
vows when we stand up on the altar before our spouse,
the pastor, the crowd, and God. Love courses through
our veins and passionately erupts in a heart-felt “I Do,
I WILL!” Yet over the years the adrenaline of that day
disperses and we take that love for granted. As such,
those warming their marriages on the embers of that
flame from 40 years ago will often grow cold. A new
fire must be lit and maintained often. They don’t start
on accident either.
In that same way, the shock and love of the cross can
fade from our hearts unless we are intentional to reflect on it. My hope, prayer, and admonishment to you
this year is remember the horror of the cross and the
beauty of the one that hung there. It was not nails that
held him there but the unflinching love for a sinner like
me. I can NEVER repay him for that, but giving him my
life and my future seems to be a start…
Savannah, MO 64485
Mel Gibson, as any director does, takes a couple of
liberties with the story of the last week of Jesus life
(androgynous devil character, evil 40-year old babies,
small demon children running after Judas) but the soul
of the story and evil that was put on Christ is held very
accurate. Scourging was one of the worst things you
could imagine. To be whipped is bad enough, but to
take pieces of bone, metal, glass, and other things, and
work them into a whip was meant to rend flesh from
bone and send a message. Oftentimes, bones and
organs would be visible from such a beating with the
scourging yielding death from the actual trauma of the
event or the severe infection that would result later.
The image of the gruesome act is hard to bear. Then to
speak of the horror of the cross hurts on many levels.
