OLE NEWS May 2015 FROM THE DESK OF MR. SCHOCHENMAIER Issue # 9 Dear Otter Lake Families, We have nearly made it to the end of the year. Each school term I like to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights from one year. For me, it is a good reminder of all the things we collectively do to bring experience to children or new learning to staff in the form of professional development. Each year I like to mindfully, intentionally hold on to a few big memories. Just like many of you, the fast pace of my life sometimes does not allow for reflection. As I reflect, I’m not sure which memories I will hold on to. Will I hold on to the Deep Portage trip with our 5th graders or packing food with the 3rd graders at Feed My Starving Children? Maybe my memory will be the nature hikes with second graders at Tamarack or something very simple like the day to day conversations with parents at the pick-up door. I invite you to reflect at your home with your children to identify good memories for your kids. What I do know is this, Otter Lake is a great school that intentionally does things to make good memories for kids! On behalf of all the staff here at OLE, thanks for partnering with us and thank you for the great school year. T E R L A K E Phy. Ed. Facts from Mr. O’Connell In May, Otter Lake students will be finishing up the same six Fitnessgram tests we took in the Fall. We practiced the Pacer test once a month starting back in November, so the students will really be able to zero in on their goal for the actual test we took the last week of April. The Pacer test is a test they will continue to take in Middle School and it tests each student’s Aerobic Capacity. The Springs fitness tests give Otter students a chance to compare their fitness level to where they were at in the beginning of the year. Students will be able to add these tests results to their Sportfolio’s and I will also send a copy home for you and your child to view together and look for improvement in the different areas tested. Those areas are: BMI - Total Body Composition, Sit and Reach test - Flexibility, Curl Up test - Core strength, Arm Hang test - Upper Body Strength, Pacer test and Mile or 1/2 Mile - Aerobic Capacity. After testing we will spring into our Track and Field unit. Each gym period the student will try one field event and one track event. Track events consist of hurdles, distance running , sprints and relays. The Field events are running long jump, standing long jump, foxtail throw (discus), and Javelin. We’ll finish out the year with our Baseball/Softball/T -Ball unit. The kids will get a chance to show their knowledge of the rules (we learned and practiced in our kick ball unit). Outside we are going to work on throwing, fielding, hitting, and rules playing a game each class period. Nutritional Tip: If you find yourself hungry and craving sugar or sweets two to three hours after a meal you probably consumed too many carbohydrates that last meal. Whenever you have a problem with hunger or carbohydrate cravings, look to your meal for a clue to the reason why. Taken from - The Zone by Barry Sears. Enjoy this Spring weather as a family and be active together outside! Mr. O’Connell - Physical Educational Specialist HABLA ESPAÑOL? ¡ Hola a todos! As we near the end of the school year and the beginning of summer, it’s important to remember that successful second language acquisition requires practice— year round! Encourage your child to maintain what they have learned this year as well as to learn more over the summer with basic Spanish books (ex. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss), watching a favorite (ex: Finding Nemo) movie with the audio in Spanish, or by playing fun Spanish games at websites like http:/ interactivitiesites.weebly.com/ spanish.html. Duolingo is another fabulous app to use on the iPad or iPhone. There are also many great places that you can visit over the summer with countless opportunities for our child to practice. Some excellent ideas include: Midtown Global Market, Mercado Central, and El Burrito. The Festival of Nations runs from April 30—May 3 this year. Have some fun and learn all about the Hispanic culture right here in the Twin Cities! Thank you for a wonderful school year and I hope you all have a wonderful summer! Señora Boever
