Great Summer Bins to Borrow NEW Kamloops Child Care Resource and Referral 2 Sun safety and children Since children spend a lot more time outside than adults, they need to be protected from the sun‘s rays, no matter how old they are. By teaching your child SunSense while they‘re young, you'll be protecting them now and reducing their risk of developing skin cancer in the future. How to protect your child Keep babies out of direct sunlight. Use clothing that covers their arms and legs add a hat and slap on a little sunscreen. Keep them protected in a covered stroller, under an umbrella or in the shade. This can also help prevent dehydration and sunstroke. Try to keep toddlers and children out of the sun, between 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are at their strongest, or any time of the day when the UV Index is 3 or more. Send your kids to school or play in protective clothing, such as a large t-shirt and a wide-brimmed hat (this provides more protection than a baseball cap). Don‘t forget to cover their shoulders and necks as these can get easily burned. Provide shade in your kids play area. Trees or a large umbrella work well. Always apply sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher to your kids at least 20 minutes before they go outside. Reapply often and don‘t forget their nose, ears, cheeks and tops of their feet. If they‘re playing in or near water, make sure the sunscreen is waterproof and re apply often. Also make sure they have dry clothing after playing in water as wet clothing can lose up to half of its UV protection. Don‘t put sunscreen around your child‘s eyes – it will probably sting. Try to get them to wear a hat. Or as soon as they can wear sunglasses, think about getting them a good quality pair of wraparound sunglasses to protect their eyes. Toy sunglasses may be fun but they can do more harm than good. Don‘t use baby oil as a moisturizer before your child goes outside. The oil will make the effect of the sun stronger and could cause your child to burn faster. On an extra piece of paper, arrange your leaves and flowers in a circle, to get an idea of what you would like to make with them. 2. Using a pencil, lightly draw a circle on the paper you‘re going to use for your print. You can make the circle round by tracing around a plate. 3. Make a dot on the circle at the top centre and the bottom centre. 4. Brush paint on the back of a leaf, and place it carefully on the circle you‘ve drawn. Make sure not to move it around, or the paint will smudge. (If you like, you can practice first on scrap paper.) 5. Cover the leaf with a tissue and smooth it down lightly. After a few seconds, lift the tissue and gently peel off the leaf. 6. Repeat the process with other leaves and flowers, working your way down one side of the circle and then the other. Then, you see a vine and you watch it, watch it. Then, you see a watermelon and you pick it, pick it. Then, you slice it up and you eat it, eat it. If you find a seed, then you plant it, plant it. And start all over again! Adapted Traditional FIVE BIG BUBBLES Five big bubbles floating all around. Until one popped when it landed on the ground. Four big bubbles floating high and free. Until one popped when it landed in a tree. Three big bubbles floating quite as a mouse. Until one popped when it landed on the house. Two big bubbles floating down to land. Until one popped when it landed in my hand. One big bubble still floating in the air. Until it popped when it landed in my hair. Jean Warren THERE ARE BUBBLES IN THE AIR Tune: ―If You‘re Happy And You Know It.‖ There are bubbles in the air, in the air. There are bubbles in my hair, in my hair. There are bubbles in the air, There are bubbles in my hair. There are bubbles everywhere, everywhere! THREE LITTLE FROGS Three little frogs Sitting on a log On a sunny day. Three little frogs Jumped off the log And then they hopped away. SHELLS ON THE SEASHORE Tune: "Down By The Station" TINY TIM I had a little turtle, his name was Tiny Tim. I put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim. He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap. And now he's sick in bed, with a bubble in his throat! (Hiccup!) Down at the seashore, Early in the morning. See the little shells All along the shore. See the great big waves Splashing on the shore. When they pull back, Kamloops Child Care Resource and Referral 7 Summer Time Games Summer Carnival Duck Duck Squirt Put on a miniature summer carnival for your children. You can play a simpler variety of all of the traditional carnival games (fish pond, throw a ball to knock over blocks, apple bob, relay races, balance beam, etc). Shark! Put hula hoops or beach towels on the ground to serve as dens for all the "fish." One child gets to be the shark. When the shark calls, "Fishy, fishy, cross my ocean," the fish have to move to a different den. If, while out of a den, the shark tags them, they get to be sharks as well. The last remaining fish becomes the first shark next time. Adults can also remove dens, forcing kids to stand together on one. Tip: For extra fun, the shark can tickle the fish. Variations: The shark can be a T. rex, and the fish can be vegetarian brachiosaurs. Bird lovers can be hawks and mice. Construction buffs can be loaders and boulders, and so on. Optimal age: 3 and up Number of players: 4 or more A parent observes "There's nothing like a shark-empowered 4-year-old to keep three big kids huddled in a hula hoop." Required: Squirt gun/bottle and clean bucket of water Players: Small to medium groups All players sit or stand in a circle. Pick a person to be it. They are to go around the circle like Duck, Duck, Goose but they say " Duck, Duck, Squirt". They then squirt a player and the chase begins. The "squirter" is to run around the circle and back to players position without getting tagged by the person that was squirted. Mouse Tails Tuck pieces of string or yarn about a foot long into the backs of the kids' shoes. After you yell "Go!," the kids try to step on each other's tails. When all the tails are lost, replace and repeat. Tip: Have extra string on hand. Variations: Tuck white socks into waistbands for Bunny Tails, which other players grab. Optimal age: 2 and up Number of players: 3 or more A parent observes: "My daughter had as much fun braiding the tails as playing the game." Kamloops Child Care Resource and Referral 8 Summer Time Crafts Paint With Clouds Put a lump of shaving cream on a piece of finger paint paper. Add a drop or two of food coloring to the shaving cream for color and let the kids paint with the shaving cream "clouds." Fuzzy Head Craft Project Materials 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. old knee hi or cut off panty hose, grass seed, dirt, 2 small elastics, and decorations Have the children put 2 tsp of grass seed in the bottom of toe of the panty hose. Add 1-2 cups of dirt. Make sure the seeds stay in the top of the head, otherwise you‘ll have hair sprouting from under the eyes. Use the small elastic to pinch off a nose about half way up the head. Use the second elastic to tie off the bottom. The children can decorate by pasting on eyes, mouth, ears, or what ever else intrigues the kids. Use paper, felt, colored plastic, markers, pipe cleaners, any materials you have on hand. Keep the Fuzzy Head in a small dish with water in the bottom. The ‗hair‘ should sprout in less than a week. Kids can style the hair with elastics, clips and scissors. Oobleck For those of you who want all the fun and twice the mess of a dilatants fluid without the chemicals, then I suggest the following recipe for oobleck: Corn Starch Water You only want about a tablespoon of water per cup of corn starch. This makes a fluid that flows easily in your hands, but will harden when it is handled quickly. It can be really fun and inexpensive to put about 50 lbs of corn starch into a kid's swimming pool (empty the pool first!) and then add enough water to get the desired consistency.
