Professional Development
Corporate Development this week had a
divulge discussion board open to the class
on Friday from 8-9. They did it on the song
“You Were Meant For Me” and had 42
comments. They had a successful
discussion and asked questions such as “Do
you think little things can lead to a big
breakup?”
Professional Development created a fun
activity to demonstrate the varieties of
personalities throughout the world. It was
easy to understand and not presented in
a garble way. We created small figures
with our special personalities and added
them to the globe they created. It was a
creative and great way for the students to
connect with the quick write “What is the

DAY 1- QUICK WRITE
We answered the question “What Is the Best Thing
About Yourself?”. This caused students to really evaluate
themselves and think about what really is the best thing
about themselves. They had the time of two songs to
complete the quick write so they had to recoup and
recoil from lost time while thinking. Some students
students were hesitant to share because they did not
want to reek of selfishness and talk about how great
they are. Overall, this quick write was very engaging and
enlightening and got students thinking. Some traits
students shared were that they cared about others, were
athletic, and smart. We pointed out our values and what
makes other people valuable by their personality traits.
DAY 2- SONG
On day two we analyzed the song “You Were Meant For Me” by
Jewel. She grew up near a rivulet in Alaska before her singing
career living in her car. She was relentless in her pursuit of music. It’s
an American song written in 1994 in the country genre. The
instruments in the song are sad and go along with the demure lyrics
which are also gloomy. Her voice quavers with the instruments. This
song caused for a lot of discussion. Most students comported with
each other stating that the song was about a girl who had just
broken up with her boyfriend. In the beginning of the discussion
students had to concise in the way of just blowing over some of
the lyrics in the song that had a deeper meaning to it. As the
discussion grew, students realized that throughout the song
there were hints as to why he left her. Another part of the
discussion in the class that was thought to be brevity turned
into a long discussion as to how long their relationship had
been. We concluded that her old “lover” was very valuable to
her even through the ups and downs. This connects to her
values because she realized how valuable the relationship was
after it ended.

DAY 3- POEM
This week, our class analyzed the poem “To An Athlete Dying
Young” by A.E. Housman. This poem was written in 1896 and was
later republished in a book of poetry in 1902. The author was a
proponent of early death. His writing was often considered
staccato , or different in style than most. He only published about
forty poems. This poem fits in the genre of “people dying young”.
It brings up many interesting points such as whether it’s better to
die young at life’s peak, or die old as it has been. Housman makes
the reader realize that they should not squander their time as an
amazing athlete, but enjoy it. The poem mentions a runner as he
enjoys being the star athlete of the town The idea that all hyped up
athletes eventually are replaced by someone better is mentioned
several times. While it is not an official statute of any kind, it’s true
that most athletes become coaches, which is a reason for readers to
believe that it is better to live a long life than die young. This poem
is meant to make readers think whether dying young and at their
peak or dying old and faded out is better. It points out the
depreciation of accomplishments as life goes on as their fame
deteriorates. He can forestall his future by dying young. His
accomplishments as an athlete make it valuable which connects to
his message if dying early is worth it.
