Create Your Acadia 100 Challenge!
Acadia National Park will celebrate its centennial in 2016. Friends of Acadia, Acadia National
Park, and community partners are planning a year-long, Maine-wide celebration highlighting
the previous hundred years of world-class conservation at the park and inspiring and
launching the next hundred years of stewardship of Acadia.
The Acadia 100 Challenge
The Acadia 100 Challenge is a special opportunity for teachers and their students to celebrate and deepen the relationship
of “tomorrow’s stewards” to their park. Teachers are encouraged to help students create a class project or individual
project to celebrate 100 years of Acadia: write a 100-word Acadia poem or 100 poems, take 100 photos of Acadia, walk 100
miles in Acadia, write 100 short stories about a field trip to or family visit to Acadia, read 100 books about Acadia, draw
100 pictures of Acadia, Create 100 posters of ways to protect Acadia, film 100 interviews with kids showcasing what they
love about Acadia…
Acadia invites teachers to create their own fun ideas for an Acadia 100 Challenge. Document your students’ completion of
the challenge in a way that’s suitable for your particular project—through photographs, text, lists, video, or any other
creative means. Include a class photo if you can. Submit this form along with your documentation when your students
have completed the challenge. It’s that easy!
We will share your students’ achievement on the Acadia Centennial website (www.acadiacentennial2016.org) and invite
others to take on the Acadia 100 Challenge. When your project is complete, we will share your final project and your class
photo (if you want) on the Centennial website. We will showcase the writing, art, ideas, and accomplishments of your
students—to give them credit for their efforts and to inspire others to participate.
Each Acadia 100 Challenge participant will receive an Acadia Centennial item (stickers with the centennial logo, etc.) and
become eligible to earn a free field trip to Acadia for their entire class (from a Maine location). Homeschoolers welcome!
How do I sign up to do an Acadia 100 Challenge with my students?
1) Decide as a class what your challenge will be. No need to fill out the application to participate UNTIL you finish
the challenge, but we'd love to hear from you so we can share your idea with others (contact info below).
2) If your plan involves a visit to Acadia National Park, please visit
http://www.nps.gov/acad/learn/education/classrooms/parks-as-classrooms.htm for additional information. Note
that activities done inside the park require a fee waiver form
(http://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/feewaivers.htm) to be completed for vehicles to access the park for free
and may require a special use permit (http://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/permits.htm) for other group
events. Activities in the park should be coordinated directly with the park by emailing [email protected]
with “Centennial School Activity Request in Acadia to receive assistance” in the subject line.
3) Complete your Acadia 100 Challenge within a time frame that makes sense for your class. Along the way,
document your activities through photographs, text, lists, video, or any other creative means.
4) Complete and submit this form, and include any relevant documentation and a class photograph if you wish.
If you have questions or would like to talk through your idea, feel free to contact Paige Steele
