In the 1930s the National Socialist Worker’s Party came to power in Germany. They wanted to get rid of all Jews in
Europe because they thought they were bad.
When Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933 , he passed many laws that took away the rights of Jews. They
had to wear a yellow star on their clothes. Many were afraid of the Nazis and tried to escape.
Soon thousands of Jews were arrested and taken to special camps. Others had to live in overcrowded parts of cities , called ghettos.
In 1942 the Nazis met near Berlin and decided that all Jews should be killed. All over Europe concentration camps
were built. The biggest ones were in Poland.
Those who were lucky became slaves in these camps and had to work. But they didn’t get enough to eat and many
of them starved. Most Jews were brought to gas chambers, which looked like big showers. They were killed with
poison gas , then their bodies were burned.
Many countries that fought Hitler knew about the death camps but they couldn’t do anything about them. When the
Allied soldiers entered Germany in 1945 they freed the concentration camps.
After the Second World War most Jews had no place to go. In 1948 the United Nations decided to give homeless
Jews a new place to live—Israel.
Today there are museums and memorials all over the world that show the world the horrors that happened over 60
years ago.
