cquired immune deficiency syndrome or AIDS has killed an estimated 25 million
people worldwide since 1982. Of these 25 million deaths, 12 million were children
who lived in Africa. AIDS is caused by a virus known as HIV or human immunodeficiency
virus, which attacks the host’s white blood cells leaving the person susceptible to many
different diseases. Sub-Saharan Africa (south of the Sahara Desert) accounts for two-thirds
of the 39.5 million worldwide cases of HIV/AIDS and 75 percent of deaths caused by
AIDS. The graphic to the right shows where in Africa HIV/AIDS is most prevalent.
Countries further south show much higher percentages of citizens with HIV/AIDS while
North African countries have very low rates of infection. In 2009, of the 10.6 million who
needed it, only 3.9 million patients with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa were given
antiretroviral therapy (ART); this treatment works to slow the progression of the HIV virus
and has shown great successes in reducing pain and suffering as well as death among HIV
victims. While efforts to treat and prevent HIV such as ART and PMTCT (Prevention of
Mother to Child Transmission) expand in sub-Saharan Africa, their coverage is still
unacceptably low in the region according to the World Health Organization.
