The life of the congregation is enriched by the many different kinds of service that
members offer. This represents an expression of Paul’s great picture of the church
as the body of Christ, with each member contributing to the health of the whole.
(I Corinthians 12)

Congregational leadership is one important area of service in the church. Each
year, members of First Presbyterian Church are called by the congregation to exercise a ministry of leadership within the church as Elders and Deacons. These are

Elders in Class 2019
MIKE CHARLTON*
Jill and I joined in 2001, shortly after we moved to San Antonio. My wife, Jill, and I have been married for almost 17
years. We have three children, Meredith (13), Max (9), and
Annabelle (8). Jill and all of my children were baptized at
FPC San Antonio. My parents, Tom and Ethel, regularly attend worship at FPC San Antonio as winter Texans. I have
an older sister (Linda) and younger brother (William) who
occasionally attends worship at FPC. I am the Assistant Vice President for Risk
Management and Safety at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San
Antonio. We have built $900M of education, research, and patient care facilities
during my 16 years at the Health Science Center. I also teach two graduate level
courses in Medical Health Physics for physicians, residents, fellows/graduate students and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2006. I have been actively involved
in the children’s and youth ministry for the past several years. I have been blessed
to teach an OT and NT Bible course for the children of FPC almost every Sunday since 2010. Unequivocally, the absolute most rewarding aspect of teaching is
watching these young Christians grow in their knowledge and understanding of
Holy Scripture. I am also currently enrolled in Princeton Theological Seminary’s
Certificate of Theology and Ministry and will graduate in Dec 2016. The PTSEM
program is extremely challenging, but also deeply rewarding.
NANCY CROSS
Nancy joined FPC 27 years ago. She and her husband Ed
are parents of two grown children, Ted and Charlie.
Nancy had a very satisfying career as a stay-at-home-mom
and as a volunteer, primarily in national Presbyterian renewal organizations. She has served in many roles at FPC,
but counts her service with the church’s welcoming and
belonging ministries, in strategic planning, and as teacher
of adult Sunday School as most integral to her ministry.
JERRY HARDWICK*
Maggie and I began to worship and fellowship at FPC with
our children after graduating from Austin Presbyterian
Theological Seminary in 1985. Now you will see our grandchildren growing in the Lord here with us. Our full time
vocation has been as missionary-evangelists, as a USAF
Chaplain and in parachurch ministries. Maggie is an active
deacon and we currently serve FPC leading The Bereans
Sunday School Class and on various committees. There are so many wonderful
things about FPC that excite us, but especially the emphasis on missions.
JIM MCCANN*
Sherry and I have been members at FPC for over thirty-three years. We have two children—James (32) works
at Douglass W. King and is involved with the Beethoven
Hall and chorus; Ryan (29) works part time at the administrative offices of the Majestic Theatre. Both live here in
San Antonio. I am a CPA and the Chief Financial Officer
at Insco Distributing, Inc., a wholesale distributor of air
conditioning equipment and supplies. The most rewarding ministry I have been
involved with at FPC has been the Joy Ministry. When Ron Baker started this
ministry, we were invited to be a part of this group since Ryan is on the autism
spectrum. Having lived with and worked through the all the issues raising a child
with such disabilities, we were aware of the challenges that this ministry faced. It
was personally very satisfying to see the church embrace this ministry and reach
out to those families impacted.
ED MOORE
Ed joined this church family 30 years ago. He met his wonderful wife Trudy at church and they have been married 24
years. He has served the church as a youth leader, Sunday
school teacher, worship leader, deacon and elder, and currently chairs the Worship Committee. “This continues to
be a wonderful church family for me, where people continue to encourage me in my relationship with God and in
following the footsteps of Jesus in our community and world. Serving the church
and encouraging others to be disciples continues to be my greatest joy.”
DAVID YOUNGQUIST
David Youngquist joined First Presbyterian Church on July
7, 1985. He met his wife Holly in the McCullough room
of the church and they were married on May 12, 1990 in
the Sanctuary. Their two children Hunt (23) and Lucy (20)
were Baptized in the church. David is self-employed in
the construction business and enjoys snow skiing. He has
helped start a Sunday School class, taught 7th grade Sunday
school, works with new members and he and Holly host a monthly dinner for recent college graduates. The most rewarding work he has done at First Presbyterian Church was watching the Church fill with joy when he helped with the “Come
Home for Christmas” project last Advent season.
Elders in Class 2019
BOB STEVENS*
Bob joined First Presbyterian Church in 1989. Bob married Gina in 1993 at First Presbyterian Church. They are
the proud parents of Emily, Matthew and Tyler whom have
all been baptized and have grown up in the church. Bob
has worked at CPS Energy for 30+ years in various roles.
First Presbyterian Church has a long tradition of promoting a strong Biblical Education Program. Bob has greatly
enjoyed what he has learned through these programs on Wednesday nights and
Sunday School, but has also enjoyed shepherding/teaching and seeing the word of
God revealed through the eyes of the children at First Presbyterian Church.
MICHAEL WOOD*
I have been attending FPC for about 30 yrs. I officially became a member when Ron Scates was here during
confirmation in 1989. I have been married to Jodi for 18
years; my son Michael is 15 years old and a freshman in
high school. My daughter, Payton, is 12 years old and in
6th grade. I am a Private Wealth Advisor in a boutique arm
of Merrill Lynch’s Private Banking and Investment Group.
There are too many things to name the most rewarding. One thing is watching
my children grow in their faith.
Elders in Class 2018
LYNNDA BARNES
Field and I joined the church in 1980. We have one grown
daughter and a son in law. Over the years I have been active
in Presbyterian Women, served on the Diaconate, Session,
taught Sunday School, participated in Bible Study and been
a member of many committees. The most impactful aspect
of FPC has been the fact that this is my church family and
is as important to me as my nuclear family. I look forward
to the best years ahead.
BOXY HORNBERGER
Boxy and his wife Janet have been members of FPC for 34
years, and Boxy has served as an Elder for several terms.
In the past, he has served on many committees and taught
Sunday School in the elementary grades for many years.
He also has served as Moderator of the Board of Deacons.
He and Janet have been married for 37 years, and they
have three grown children, Elizabeth Fry (Casey), Charles
Hornberger (Caroline), and Sarah (engaged to Kyle Palmer), as well as two grandsons, Conrad and Wallace.
Elder in Class 2017
MIKE MUNROE
I first joined First Presbyterian with my mother and father
in 1985, and after living and working in other cities, I
re-joined in 2007. Mary Claire and I have two wonderful
daughters: Sarah (in Chicago) and Amy (in St. Paul). I
believe that the greatest joy in life is being a disciple of Jesus
Christ – abiding in Him, learning from Him, thanking Him
and imitating Him in our own lives. In my service to the
church, God has especially blessed me through mission experiences, from swinging hammers at Project 240 to having fellowship with fellow Christians in India,
Malawi and Mexico. It is certainly true that in Christ, there is no East or West,
and that His kingdom is one great fellowship throughout the whole wide Earth.
Deacons in Class 2019
JANE BLACKBURN*
I joined First Presbyterian Church San Antonio in May
1986 by transfer of letter from FPC Amarillo. After attending Hanover College, I recieved a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from University of Texas Medical Branch.
My four children, John, David, Paul and Heather, live
around San Antonio, and I’m blessed with six grandchildren and one great grandson. The most fulfilling aspect of
my ministry at FPC has been as a longtime member of the Sanctuary Choir. As a
choir member, directed and supported by gifted musicians who take seriously the
mission to prepare music that serves the church and honors the Lord, I encountered the majesty and love of God.
BARBARA DORSEY*
I joined FPC in October 2004. I am single and am retired
from a career in Civil Service spent primarily at the Defense Language Institute English Language Center and the
USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. The most rewarding
aspect of my time at FPC has been the deep friendships I’ve
formed with faithful Christian women, and the growth of
my own faith and discipleship. I’ve particularly enjoyed
the Tuesday morning Ladies’ Bible Study, and the year I served as Historian for
Presbyterian Women which gave me the opportunity to witness the exceptional
outreach programs of this wonderful group of ladies.
ANNE HILLER*
My husband and I began attending FPC in the spring of
2001 shortly after we were married and officially joined one
or two years later. I have been married to Greg HIller since
March 2001 and we have twin boys, Payton and Preston,
who are 9 years old. I am a Pediatric Physical Therapist.
The most life-changing aspect of my ministry at FPC was
co-teaching Basecamp Sunday school for several years.
SAMMY VERHEUL*
Sammy Verheul has been involved in the young adult
program at FPC since 2012 and became a member in 2014.
She and her husband, Hunter, have been married for almost
4 years and are both avid Spurs and Aggie fans. Sammy
is a financial analyst at Tesoro Corporation where she has
worked for 6 years. Sammy is part of the FPC team that
will be traveling to Malawi at the end of April and is excited
to see how God will use her in that experience!
Deacons in Class 2019
JONATHAN BARKER*
I Joined FPC in January 2009 through declaration of faith
and baptism by John Seiders after several years of attending
with my parents. I have been married to Michele since 2008
when we were married at FPC by Rich Kannwischer, and we
have a two year old daughter, Caroline. I am a commercial
real estate appraiser with CBRE, where I have worked since
2011. The most rewarding aspect of my (admittedly limited)
ministry at FPC has been the service we have been able to provide through Project
240 and our sponsorship of a child in Malawi through World Vision.
NINA JORDAN
After attending FPC for several years, Nina and her husband, Rick, joined the church in 2002. Their daughters,
Hannah and Emily, were later confirmed as members of
FPC. Nina spent many years teaching Children’s Day Out
as a pre-school teacher, helping with worship in Children’s
Sunday School, and has loved being a stay at home mom
and volunteer. Her most inspiring work for Jesus has been
in the YoungLives ministry held weekly at FPC as an outreach to at risk teens and
teen moms from Healy Murphy and Seton Home.
TRUDY MOORE
Trudy was baptized into this church family and grew up
at FPC. She met her wonderful husband Ed at church and
they have been married 24 years. She has served as a youth
leader, deacon, volunteer with the front desk ministry, and
more recently as a “reading buddy” with a group from the
church that are serving second graders at Cameron Elementary School on the East Side of San Antonio. “I am
passionate about my calling to serve and always excited about where that takes
me, both literally and spiritually.”
LOUISE PETERS
Loren and I Joined FPC in 1998. My two daughters, Loren’s
two daughters and our five grandchildren are spread across
Texas from Texarkana to College station, across greater
Houston and then Lubbock. Since retiring in 2006, the
Diaconate, Prayer Ministry and our Sunday School class
“Christian Thinkers Through the Ages” have been my
favorite ways to be active at FPC.
HARRIETT RANEY
Doug and I joined First Presbyterian in 1992. Doug has
owned Actec Rental Inc. since 1970. We have two grown
children and six grandchildren that all live in San Antonio.
I have been richly blessed since we joined First Pres but my
small group on Thursday morning bible study has been the
source of many special friendships and blessings.
HOLLY YOUNGQUIST
Holly Youngquist has been a member at FPC since 1985.
She and her husband David met in the McCullough room
and were part of the Young Adult Ministry until they
married in May of 1990. They have two children, Hunt (a
graduate student at Baylor) and Lucy (a sophomore at Baylor). Holly has been blessed to be able to stay at home and
raise her children and now fills her days with volunteering,
thrifting, traveling and occasionally playing Mah Jhong. Her most rewarding
ministries at FPC have been her involvement with Children’s Day Out, High
School Mission Trips and a Lifegroup she and David hosted for Young Married
couples.
Deacons in Class 2019
JOHN CARTER
John Carter joined First Presbyterian Church by Transfer of
Letter in 2003. His wife Ann is a lifelong member of FPC and
teaches at Alamo Heights HS, and their three children Jeanne
Ann, Robert and Grace have all grown up in the church;
Jeanne Ann recently graduated from the Savannah College of
Art and Design, and Robert is a freshman at Eckerd College.
John works in Healthcare Administration and is the Central
Region Ancillary Lead for United Healthcare. John has previously served as an Elder at FPC and on several Officer Nominating Committees. John has a passion for
Christian Education and Biblical Literacy and has enjoyed teaching Adult Sunday
School classes at FPC and serving on the Adult Education Committee, as well as
working to develop small group and discipleship opportunities.
ED CROSS*
Nancy and I joined FPC in 1989 after the birth of our first
son, Teddy. He, and his younger brother Charlie, are now
both grown and out of the house. I am involved in commercial real estate as the CEO of San Antonio Commercial Advisors and as an investor and owner of downtown
apartment complexes. My most rewarding and life-changing ministry has been with Dennis Jones as his caregiver at
church and as his effective legal guardian in life. I look forward to my service as a
deacon.
RICH LANGE
My wife, Kitty, and I have been married for 46 years and
have one son, Casey, who is 38, and one granddaughter,
Eloise, who is 8. Kitty and I joined First Presbyterian
Church on June 5, 1988, so we’ve been members almost 28
years. I’ve been a deacon three previous times and chair
of the deacons in the 1999-2000 millennial year. I’ve also
served on Children’s Ministry, and for a dozen years or so
coordinated the various groups at First Pres for feeding the homeless under the
bridge. Kitty and I started The Acorn School 36 years ago, and I am blessed to
work with those joyful, inquisitive, creative preschool and kindergarten children
every school day. It certainly keeps me young and smiling!
CHARLOTTE MILNER
Charlotte joined FPC in 1994. She has one daughter,
Martha, a freshman at Alabama. She is a Insurance Broker
specializing in Estate Planning - Life, Health & Long Term
Care. Genesis II/ Bridges Sunday School class has been
special to her. This group has shared wonderful Bible Study
as well as births, deaths, disease and joys of graduations
and weddings and lots of wonderful meals. Charlotte loves
Alabama football, cooking and golf.
ADAM SHARPE*
My wife, Sara, and I dated through college at Texas A&M
and got married in 2005. We joined FPC in 2007 before we
had our two little girls, Sarita (7), and Anna (5). I work with
my family at Brad Sharpe Pools Construction. The most
rewarding aspect of FPC for me has been ushering- I’ve
met some great friends and it’s something I really enjoy and
look forward to.
GORDON SMITH
I joined the church in December 1991. I am married to
Martha, and we have two children, Helen and Graham. I
work in the title business handling real estate transactions.
I have enjoyed serving as a deacon before, as well as serving
as an adult chaperone on middle school Breakaway retreats,
and Martha and I have also enjoyed teaching elementary
school Sunday School.
FORREST (SONNY) SPARKS JR.*
I joined FPCSA on Easter of 2014.
My family that are members of FPCSA are Vietta Sparks,
and Lynnda and Field Barnes. My three grown children
are Kaegan (27), Sarah (24) married to Jake, and my son
Forrest III (23) in South Korea. I have always been in sales:
industrial products, commercial real estate, and retirement
and estate planning insurance products. My greatest joy
and privilege has been to glorify my GOD by being a member of the magnificent
choral and music dept led by Tom Dooling and Jae Ha.
Deacons in Class 2018
BILL BURNETT*
Bill and his wife Jane joined the church in 1987, transferring from Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. They were
drawn to this Church by the breadth of its missionary
focus and the biblical foundation of everything FPC does.
They have four married adult children living in Austin,
Memphis, TN, and Washington, D.C. Bill is a CPA, former
partner with Arthur Andersen LLC and is on the Board of
NuStar GP Holdings LLC. Bill has been spiritually rewarded by participating in
many FPC activities, but two especially meaningful ones have been the Sunday
school classes and Thursday Bible study sessions.
GEORGE CASE
My family and I joined First Pres in 1986. Kay and I have
two wonderful sons, two beautiful daughters in law and five
of the coolest grandkids around. I practiced Urology for 40
years, retiring two years ago. The most rewarding aspect of
my ministry at First Pres was my first rotation as a Deacon,
followed closely by five medical mission trips to places such
as Kenya, Haiti, and Mexico.
JACQUE PATTON
Jacque joined FPC in 1985. She is a semi-retired pediatric
audiologist and a Listening and Spoken Language Auditory-Verbal Therapist for children with hearing loss and their
families. She finds fulfillment in serving in various mission
projects in the city and around the world, worshipping in
the contemporary service, hosting and participating in a
small group Bible study and fellowship, and serving communion to the congregation. Jacque is married to Frank Patton, with two grown
step-daughters and five growing grandchildren.
CAROLYN WALTHALL
I am married to Walter Walthall III and became a member
of First Presbyterian Church San Antonio over 35 years ago.
All 3 of our children—Walter IV, Laura and Ellen— grew
up in this church, and three of our six grandchildren now
have that privilege; the other three live in Georgia. Over the
years I have taught children’s Sunday school, Bible School,
and children’s choir. It has been a great blessing for me to
have been involved in the Women of the Church Circles 6 and 11 as well as the
Ruhmann’s Tuesday night Small Group. This church has nurtured me, helped me
grow spiritually, and continues to bring me great joy in Christian worship and
fellowship. I have previously served two rotations as a deacon.
JOHN WHITSETT
I am in the commercial real estate business and have been
a member of First Presbyterian Church since the 1980’s. I
look forward to the opportunity to again serve Christ and
His people as a Deacon after an extended layoff. My wife,
Catherine, artist extraordinaire to the Children’s Ministry, is
mom to our son Jamey, an aspiring writer, who is currently
enjoying a “Gap Year” while taking core classes at SAC.
EDWYNA YARBROUGH
In 1997, when Leroy was called as Minister of Music at FPC,
we became Presbyterians and joined this wonderful congregation. Following Leroy’s death, in search of opportunities
other than music for service, I participated in four Yucatan
Mission Trips, served on Global Mission Committee, three
Trinity Student Discipleships, as well as continuing with Friday Singer. As a Deacon and retired nurse, it was a blessing
and privilege to visit hospitalized members, but the most fulfilling ministry was
sharing my experiences with grief and walking that path with new widows. My
greatest gift from God, other than Leroy, is our two wonderful daughters, sons in
law (living in Houston and Dallas) and five terrific grandchildren.
If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies.
I Peter 4:11 NKJV
