GUEST CONDUCTORS MAREK JANOWSKI AND JURAJ VALČUHA LEAD THE SAN FRANCISCO
SYMPHONY IN TWO DYNAMIC PROGRAMS
Violinist Arabella Steinbacher gives first SFS performance of the Hindemith Violin Concerto March 9–
12; violinist Gil Shaham performs Barber’s Violin Concerto March 16–18
Concerts also include Brahms’s Symphony No. 4 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7
SAN FRANCISCO, February 24 — Guest conductors Marek Janowski and Juraj Valčuha lead the San Francisco
Symphony (SFS) in two concerts next month. On March 9–12, Marek Janowski leads the SFS in an all-German
program that features the first SFS performance of Hindemith’s virtuosic and rarely-performed Violin Concerto, led by
violinist Arabella Steinbacher. Part of an all-German program that includes two composers’ confrontations with warfare,
the violin concerto is paired with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, a portrayal of a Roman general’s vengeful attack on
his homeland. Brahms’s Symphony No. 4 concludes the program.
The following week, Slovak conductor Juraj Valčuha leads the SFS in a bold concert program on March 16–18 that
includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Schreker’s Chamber Symphony and Barber’s lush and sweeping Violin
Concerto featuring venerated violinist Gil Shaham. Schreker wrote his Chamber Symphony in late 1916 as a centennial
piece for the Vienna Music Academy and it remains one of his most widely performed works today.
