Minister’s Musings, by Reverend Stefanie Etzbach-Dale
Minister’s
Musings
Reverend
Stefanie
EtzbachDale
It’s hard to believe that we’re already six months into the year! The past few
months have been a whirlwind of activity at UUFRC – inspiring generosity on
behalf of next year’s budget, leadership for our Board of Trustees and various
committees, assessment of and gratitude for “what’s working well”, as well as
encouragement to “simplify” things where necessary. Our staff, leadership,
members and friends bring so much to this community and to our ability to bring our
mission to life!
Along those lines all members are urged to attend the June 5th Annual
Meeting – an opportunity to participate in the spiritual practice of “congregational
polity in action”. The following week everyone is invited to participate in the
annual ritual of “Flower Communion” during the youth-led service. Do plan to
bring along a few cut flowers to place on our altar as an affirmation of renewed
commitment to celebrate and protect diversity! You may also wish to join me, Jeri
Hover and our Youth Group at the 4th Annual San Mateo LGBTQ Pride festival on
June 4th.
I’ll be heading out on summer leave as of June 20th – and am so looking
forward to getting lots of rest, drawing, catching up on reading, cloud-watching and
collecting a few drops of water from Bash-Bish Falls in Massachusetts (for our
Water Communion in September). I’ll be readily available to meet again in mid
August, and back in our pulpit again August 21st.
During the time when I’m “off the grid” pastoral needs can be directed to our
new Caring Committee co-chairs, Danielle Stagner and Sharon Gee. Meanwhile,
do let me know if you’d like to set up a time to talk before then. May you enjoy the
summer in good health and with much joy!
In Awe & Gratitude, Rev. Stefanie Etzbach-Dale

SHARE THE PLATE: June 19th
This month’s Share the Plate recipient is Dignity on Wheels, a program created by
East Palo Alto’s Project WeHOPE – offering showers and laundry service to our
homeless neighbors in Redwood City, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Their mobile truck
trailer is outfitted with two showers and two washer/dryers. In one four-hour site
visit, they provide up to 30 showers and 14 single loads of laundry. The program has
been so successful that they are hoping to purchase a second mobile truck trailer to
better meet existing needs. Our congregation has been donating soaps, shampoos,
and toothbrushes to Dignity on Wheels for quite some time - but this is a chance to
make a greater impact by providing funds for them to expand their work. Please
give generously on June 19th!

CONNECTING WITH YOUR MINISTER
Rev. Stefanie will be on summer leave as of June 20th - so be sure to reach out now if you need to schedule an
appointment to talk about spiritual resources available to you this summer. (She can best be reached before
then via email at [email protected].) In the event of an urgent pastoral matter over the summer, please
contact our Caring Committee co-chairs. You may also reach out to any member of the (newly renamed)
Committee on Ministries: John Anning, Liz Sloan, David Stoutamire, and DeeDee Stovel.
NEW CARING COMMITTEE LEADERSHIP: Danielle Stagner and Sharon Gee
Many thanks to Karen Gibson and Annie Tate for all their “behind the scenes” efforts these past few years in
coordinating meals, rides and friendly visits for members in need! Most recently, they have been connecting
with Danielle Stagner and Sharon Gee, our new Caring Committee Co-Chairs! Please be sure to contact
them directly if you are in need of support.
THEME BASED MINISTRY 2016-2017
We’re taking a break from monthly themes over the summer and will be starting up again in September. If
you have resources to recommend for any of the 2016-2017 themes listed below (such as poems, book/film
recommendations, or service project ideas), please be sure to send them to Rev. Stefanie well in advance so
they can be woven into that month’s focus!

News Flash -- Nourish and Grow Pledge Drive a Tremendous Success!!
Thank you Fellowship! The Nourish and Grow Pledge Drive has been VERY
successful. We reached 99.4% of our stretch goal of $280,000! As of today we have
pledge commitments of $278,332.
With gratitude,

Cindy Johnson, Connections Coordinator
Summer approaches and I can feel the Fellowship taking a collective deep breath and exhaling:
We’re nearly though the church year!
A brief review of the highlights of our year tells me why we’re ready to slow way down for the
summer. Look what we’ve accomplished:
•
Our lawns have been “be-goned” and UUFRC is now surrounded by
native and drought tolerant plants. This was a huge project, made possible by many willing
hands (and backs). Member Carolyn Chaney was given a reward by our Pacific Central District
for her work and dedication in making this happen.
•
Rev. Stefanie’s Installation took place in January. Preparations for this celebration of our settled
minister included the design and creation of a beautiful, colorful mobile now hanging from our
Sanctuary ceiling (thank you Dave Reese).
•
We continue to increase outreach beyond our walls, joining UUSM in “Black Lives Matter”
conversations, joining with Muslims in a food sorting program, donating food to Second
Harvest, shower supplies to the Dignity on Wheels program, and school supplies to Roosevelt
School. Rev. Stefanie has been holding office hours in local coffee shops to increase our
visibility and provide the opportunity to hold conversations with others about Unitarian
Universalism.
•
UUFRC has created a brand new committee: the Interfaith Committee, to help us come
together with other faith communities, building better understanding as well as opportunities to
work together.
•
We have accomplished the creation of a new Fellowship Photo Directory, which will be in your
hands in early June.
•
We’ve now had one full year with our new Youth Advisor, Jeri Joseph-Hover, and our new
Music Director, Dawn Reyen. Both continue to develop their respective programs and share
their knowledge, insight, and gifts with us.
Together, we’ve created that which we could not do alone. Thank you to each and every one of
you for all you’ve given, shared, created, and worked for and on.
I hope you will make time this summer to relax, pause, breathe, rest, smile, dream, write, walk,
sing. Fill yourselves after all of your giving. I will be doing the same, taking the summer off from my
job as your Connections Coordinator. I’ll look forward to seeing you all in the fall with renewed
energy and enthusiasm!

Flower Communion. Whenever our children or youth share their thoughts with our community in
a worship service, I always get comments from adults about how much they enjoy the experience.
We usually have a few such opportunities per year, depending on what programs are happening
that year: Age of Reason graduation (3rd & 4th graders), Coming of Age recognition (8th-10th
graders), senior bridging (12th graders), and the Wild & Precious Life service (representatives from
ages 0-10 and 11-20).
We will have another opportunity to hear from some of our youth on June 12, our annual Flower
Communion service. Our youth chose to work with Rev. Stefanie on this service, and will
contribute a song, a poem, a skit and some personal reflections. This service will reflect on
diversity, which is at the root of the original Flower Communion (get it? flowers, roots). Come
support our youth, come hear their thoughts, come worship together and build beloved community!
Summer. It is upon us. The Flower Communion, a multigenerational service, marks the end of the
children’s religious education calendar. Next year’s children’s religious education calendar begins
on September 11 with another multigenerational service, the Gathering of the Waters. Sunday
school classes start September 18.
Between June 12 and September 11, we will have child care, as usual, for ages 6 and under in the
Block Room on Sunday mornings from 10 am to noon. There will not be any other planned
children’s activities over the summer.
As usual, my term ends mid-June (June 19) and starts anew in mid-August (August 15). Happy
summer to you all!
See you in church.

UUFRC T-SHIRTS AVAILABLE!
The long wait for official UUFRC T-shirts is finally over! The nine original designs were
crafted at our November retreat and then the Connections Committee winnowed the entries
to three finalists to allow members and friends to vote to choose the winner. Once that was
done the committee researched vendors and engaged Vistaprint.
Sara Morgan's beautiful pencil sketch emerged as our favorite. In order for the design to
stand out on a shirt Ninarose Roybal digitized and added color (similar to our web site
theme) and produced a JPEG file. You can see the final result on this page.
Part of Vistaprint's appeal was their ability to create our own URL for ordering. You can get
UUFRC-logo shirts in black or white and tote bags easily. There are two versions of the
design; one intended for printing on white shirts, the other for black. To order, point your
browser to: http://UUFRC.biz.vistaprint.com
If you would like other items with the design on the site, please contact Alex Stagner
([email protected]) and he will arrange it with the vendor.
Have you been one of the friendly, smiling faces that hands out Orders of Service at a
Sunday service? Yes? Then, wouldn't you like to do it again? No? Then, would you like to be?
Participating as a Greeter is a great opportunity to contribute and to become better known to
others in the community. And it's fun! The Connections Committee would like to make it easy
for you. Check your calendar now and go to our online sign-up form.
Sign up for as many dates as you like!

From our Music Director, Dawn Reyen. . .
As I near the end of my first year as Music Director for the church, I am reflecting on all that
has happened during this time. Many special events and celebrations have come and gone,
many Sundays have brought new insights and reflections, many hymns have been sung, and
many hours have been spent by choir members, singing and laughing together. I confess
that my favorite times in the church are Thursday nights, when we come to the sanctuary as
a team dedicated to creating beauty, and take an hour and a half from our week to focus on
just that.
The amount of talent in our congregation is astounding. We are all extremely lucky to have
so many gifts represented in our congregants, and that these gifts are so freely shared.
Musically, we are treated to a wealth of sounds and styles. Visually, our sanctuary becomes
ever more beautiful and meditative as time passes (I particularly enjoy viewing the wall
hangings each week as the choir rehearses). I am very grateful to be a part of this
community, and am already eagerly looking forward to next year.
Plans for Music for Summer Sundays
are being finalized. Expect a wide variety of
musical offerings each week, in addition to
hymns. On June 26, we'll hear Tim Mauro, a
new face at UUFRC who is a guitarist, singer
and songwriter. On July 10 and 17, we'll hear
Anne Zheng, a professional pianist and
another new face at our fellowship. Watch for
more Summer Sunday music details in the
next newsletter.

Happy Trails Hiking Club for June
We're off to Butano State Park for our June 4 hike. This is one of my favorite hikes
because of its variety. We hike into a deep forest, out onto open rocky hillsides, and
back into the woods again. So, even though it's 11 miles long and involves a couple of
steep climbs, I like to do it every few years.
The first mile is a steep 600-foot climb up Año Nuevo Trail to Doe Ridge. At the top of
Doe Ridge we can see the Pacific Ocean. We'll walk along the ridge through Douglas fir
and then descend into a dense oak and madrone forest in Little Butano Creek Canyon.
We climb back up along the north side of the canyon into chaparral and pine for good
views of the forested canyon below us. The last three miles are an easy walk along
Jackson Flats Trail through fern gardens, redwoods, and moss-covered Douglas firs.
You can also do a 6.5-mile loop hike up and down Doe Ridge to see the Candelabra
Tree. We'll hike up Ano Nuevo Trail together and then those that wish can turn right
down the Candelabra Trail. I think the tree is a little less than one mile down the trail. It's
a huge redwood with massive forking branches that does look very much like a giant
candelabra. Return back up the Candelabra Trail and cross the Gazos Trail to hike down
Goat Hill Trail to the main park road. Cross the road and turn left (towards the ocean) on
Creek Trail. Cross the road again, walk toward the campfire center, and turn right on Six
Bridges Trail to get back to the trailhead.
Meet at the Fellowship shortly before 9am, June 4, to carpool. We’ll return about 4pm.
Bring lunch and water.

Book Discussion Group
Our book discussion group will meet Monday, June 6 at 7:30
in the back lounge, and our book, The Storied Life of AJ
Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, is on the Book Club shelves at
Keppler’s with a 20% discount.
For July 4 we’ve chosen a classic: The Age of Innocence by
Edith Wharton. Yes, July 4, so we’ll try to have some red,
white & blue M&Ms or something good. In August, we are
reading The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Always
(or almost always) the first Monday of the month at 7:30.
Everyone is welcome!

Committee on Ministries
What is the Committee on Ministries, (COM), formerly known as the Committee on Shared
Ministry? The current committee has been meeting since the fall, spending the first months
focusing on the installation and since that wonderful celebration studying ways to move forward
and to articulate our purpose to the fellowship. This effort has included conversation with UUA
staff, a study of the UUS materials on these committees and discussions amongst ourselves and
with Rev. Stefanie.
We feel the name “Committee on Ministries” more accurately describes our role, than Committee
on Shared Ministry which led to endless confusion. Everything we do together to fulfill UUFRC’s
mission is ministry. The COM is concerned with all the ministries of the congregation and making
sure they succeed in fulfilling the fellowship’s mission. There are many ministries and they
overlap. Some ministries are named committees, others are the quiet work of individuals and still
others are paid positions.
A specific function of the COM is to independently meet with the major ministries of the
fellowship to offer assessment and appreciation of their work. Each ministry’s work needs to be
linked to the overall mission in a way that allows feedback. COM can also help facilitate
cooperation between the ministries, assess the minister’s effectiveness in fulfilling the mission
and assist in the cultivation of long term relationships beyond the walls of the church.
The COM is an advisory body to the minister and the Board of Trustees works to ensure that the
big picture doesn’t get lost in the absorption with day to day operations. The COM is appointed
by the Board of Trustees in consultation with the minister.
Please contact any of us if you have questions or comments. John Anning, Jennifer BahrDavidson, Liz Sloan, DeeDee Stovel, David Stoutamire
Summertime and MOCA is easy!
Our MOCA (Ministry of Culinary Arts) teams deserve a huge round of applause and thanks for
organizing our social hour snacks every single Sunday for ten months of the church year. The
teams are going to take a much needed break in July and August.
We’d like to be able to continue offering our after service snacks during the summer. In order to
do so, we need volunteers! We’ll keep things simple by providing only cookies and beverages.
Set-up and clean-up are simple, and can easily be done with two people for each. Instructions
will be provided, and orientation is available.
Please look for the MOCA sign-up Board that will soon appear in the Social Hall and help fill in
the blank spots. Thank you for your help! If you have any
questions, please contact our Connections Coordinator, Cindy Johnson at:
[email protected]

Third International UU Women's Convocation
Imagine a world where women and girls can make choices: get an education, have a business,
earn equal pay for equal work, participate in politics, and live free from violence and
discrimination. Through the International Women’s Convocation (IWC), you can help to
advance women’s rights and support women’s empowerment.
Please consider joining us at Asilomar, February 16 - 19, 2017. Check the website for more
information - early-bird discount through the end of June. www.intlwomensconvo.org. Check
with Geri Kennedy if you have any questions or would like to carpool.
Tutoring
Fools Mission now offers free tutoring for grade schools kids
and parents on two evenings each week. We’re seeking
volunteer tutors for these events to cover an increasing
number of students. If you would like to experience the
supreme satisfaction of assisting some terrific kids with
reading, math, or homework, and are available on a Monday
or Wednesday to give it a try, please contact Thomas Atwood
at [email protected].
Compassion Through Music
As you might already know, Fools Mission presents an informal singalong on the fourth Tuesday
evening of each month in the sanctuary. We call it a Music Jam, and we already have interest and
volunteer teachers for separate classes in guitar/ukulele and voice/ear training. In March, we were
saddened to learn of the passing of a favorite grandfather related to three participating families.
Naturally, the extended family was in shock and unable to be with us that night. So we decided to
record a video of one of our favorites (John Lennon’s Imagine) in his honor.
Our own Michael Withers has started offering bicycle repair
services in the community beyond our walls in addition to
his stellar service to the UUFRC community. He’s also
graciously agreed to partner with Fools Mission to combine
his community service with outreach and visibility for our
ministry of accompaniment. When he repairs bikes at
Maple Street Shelter, St. Anthony’s Dining Room, or in the
neighborhoods, he will now be sporting this snazzy new
sign! Thanks for your great contribution to the work of the
fools, Michael!
