Spring is definitely in the air and with it comes news of sporting activities, of summer events and changes in our community…..which is often a welcome opportunity to revisit and refresh. Talking of which TT has a new Facebook page….read on! But first a little flag waving in Clifton. COMMONWEALTH FLAG RAISED IN CLIFTON The flag of the Commonwealth of Nations was raised in Clifton on Commonwealth Day in March at a special ceremony outside St Kenelm’s Church attended by children from Clifton Primary School and the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Sir Anthony Winnington. The flag was raised by three of the schoolchildren: Olivia Griffiths, Toby Gilmour and Bill Ling, all from Eagles’ Class. The Commonwealth Affirmation was read by local resident, 92-year-old Charles Knowles. The ceremony was one of 850 similar flag-raising ceremonies held throughout Britain. MARK’S 500 MILE HIKE FOR CHARITY Clifton’s Mark Stevens will be setting out in May on a 500 mile hike along one of the world’s oldest pilgrimage routes, from southern France to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, to raise nearly £5,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. “I’m starting the month long walk on 13th May “ he told us, “and I have to walk the 500 miles over the 30 days completing nearly a marathon each day, in order to make my flight home.” Mark has been training since Christmas 2014. “My aim is to raise at least £4,460, which is the amount it costs to pay for every Marie Curie nurse in the UK for one hour. When my father passed away he received really good care in hospital so I asked my mother who to raise money for and she wanted the money to go to an organisation that cared for people with a terminal illness.” You can follow Mark’s progress via his bloghttps://markscaminoblog.wordpress.com and if you would like to donate, you can do so through his justgiving page: http://www.justgiving.com/markscamino www.temetriangle.net 3 97952 Teme Triangle April 2016_Triangle April 04.qxd 29/03/2016 13:29 page 4 UPPER SAPEY KEEP FIT The Keep Fit group at Upper Sapey Village Hall on Monday mornings welcomes both men and women who want to do more than armchair exercises but are not able to undertake strenuous exercises. The group is led by physiotherapist Angela Lane who is very mindful of any aches and pains experienced by individuals. “It’s not competitive but very friendly, with the focal points being stretching, posture, balance and muscle tone,” says Angela. For more information, telephone Angela on 01684 564334 or join the group on Monday mornings at 10.30am at Upper Sapey Village Hall. There are other Keep Fit classes of various sorts at Abberley Village Hall, Great Witley Village Hall and other venues so you have no excuse at all! 4 www.temetriangle.net 97952 Teme Triangle April 2016_Triangle April 04.qxd 29/03/2016 13:29 page 5 POINT TO POINT SEASON GETS UNDER WAY Shooting and hunting is finished so the Point to Point season begins. The orchestra is a group of twelve or so string players who regularly give concerts at home and occasionally abroad. They perform without a conductor and enjoy playing a variety of music from different centuries right up to the current day. Their concerts are renowned for appealing to a wide audience and also for the delight they give through their sensitive interpretations of the music. The concert on 6th May will include the trumpet concerto by Neruda. This most attractive work is packed full of good tunes. The soloist will be Francis Sinfield who is the grandson of Angela Richey (Haigh) who with Megan Webb founded Volante Strings seventeen years ago. The orchestra will also be playing works by Dvorak and Elgar, and some lively Tangos. Tickets are £12.50 each with students under 18 free and include interval refreshments. To book your place contact 01299 896771 or email [email protected] All welcome. St Mary’s Church is on the B4203 Stourport to Bromyard road about one mile towards Bromyard from Stanford Bridge and has a car park. CELEBRATION TO MARK THE 90TH BIRTHDAY OF H.M. Plus a cake stall and a raffle. And we shall be playing the bells for you all to hear! THE HISTORY OF THE RINGERS The original group was founded 39 years ago and played a set of handbells borrowed from Shelsley Church - encouraged by Rev. Donald Heggie, the then Vicar at St Kenelm’s. A few years later, when these bells had to be returned to the church, the group rallied together and bought their own set of bells. Fundraising events reimbursed each group member their original outlay. American bells were purchased as these were available in six months, whereas bells from an English foundry would take three years, such was the waiting list. Since then, the group have purchased more bells and look forward to the old and new teams joining forces and playing all these bells. A year ago, five new members approached us and asked if they could learn to play. We were so pleased. Now, as we extend our repertoire, we are looking for opportunities and venues at which to play. We have already played at the Talbot Christmas Fair at Knightwick, at Clifton and Martley Carol Services, and at Councillor Barbara Williams Civic Service in February at Martley Church. At each event we received some very encouraging compliments, and enquiries about future bookings - all very exciting! As well as purchasing new music to keep the new players happy, the bells need costly maintenance and TLC. Therefore, we are planning some more fund raising events. White jasmine flowers, maracas, lanterns, a smattering of Spanish, singing new songs, cakes, coffee… and lots of people who joined in to make it a very special morning. With churches across the benefice, and around the world, we remembered the Women of Cuba who kept the church and faith alive when priests were conscripted, or emigrated, under communism. We learned how Christian values underpin society there, and why the prayers of women matter. Two guest speakers, Janet Hann and Janet Lawrence from Clifton, spoke of their recent visits to Cuba – of the warmth and friendliness of the islanders’ welcome, and the creativity of the local women without many resources. We remembered how, in many cultures, women and children were regarded as chattels and, even now, can be second-class citizens. On the theme, chosen by Cuban women, ‘Receive Children, Receive Me’, we reflected on how Jesus accepts and loves us just as we are. Everyone is precious to God, regardless of age, gender, colour, religion, status… each of us is unique. Just as we are open to children and welcome them, we are invited to put aside cynicism and pre-conceptions and be open to Jesus. It was a lovely day of prayer and celebration. Many thanks to all who contributed in such a variety of ways to make it special. The future for our churches - could you help to keep them open? Find out more on page 27. 14 www.temetriangle.net 97952 Teme Triangle April 2016_Triangle April 04.qxd 29/03/2016 13:29 page 15 LOWER SAPEY NEWS with Margaret Griffiths Winter is still with us and we have had some pleasant sunny days recently, but sadly, it hasn’t warmed the garden soil up enough to work on yet and the ploughed fields look quite wet still. The very damp winter seems to have been good for moles though, as they are flourishing in our garden. Has anyone a fool-proof method of getting rid of them - for ever! However, the cricket season is round the corner, something I so look forward to and the daffodils are looking lovely in many gardens. We had a vibrant and enjoyable ‘Songs of Praise’ service in St Bartholomew’s Church recently, with everyone choosing their favourite hymns and readings and Jane Dallow, our local poet, read us two of her poems. Before the service, we enjoyed two afternoons of informal singing practice at ‘The Hope’, with tea and cake. These were great fun. Thanks go to Candy who organised these and to Dot for also helping with the service. We are so lucky in our village to have a wealth of talent in our midst and indeed, to have such a friendly community. Our Church is the focal point and the threat of it being closed concerns us all. Surely this cannot happen. NOTICES Flowers for April will be in the hands of Marion West and cleaning of the Church will be looked after by Suzanne Richards. For Easter, we would appreciate it if our ladies (or gentlemen?) decorated a window as usual in the Church. Our Mobile Library will call on Friday March 15th at 10.20 and 10.40am Our Ladies Bible Group for April will be in the home of Margaret Griffiths on April 12th. We are now starting a new study course, looking at 100 selected Bible readings and also lives of some of the Saints. www.temetriangle.net 15 97952 Teme Triangle April 2016_Triangle April 04.qxd 29/03/2016 13:29 page 16 A LOCAL QUEST – CAN YOU HELP? Robin Fidoe who lives in Bristol is appealing for help in identifying two photos, which he believes are of his ancestors. His family originates from this area and he has made numerous visits here but has now come to a dead end. These photos are, he says, highly significant in his research. Can anyone help? If so contact Robin on Mob 07711 903301, email [email protected] The Soldier The uniform is a British Army overseas non battle dress dated post WW1. The details on the back of the photograph probably relate to the portrait gallery as they are not recognised army numbers. The wording is ‘ Worcester W 71319 Pritchard 111Y8 urgent’ portrait by Horace Dudley 165 High Street, West Bromwich. The picture has been advertised in the Black Country Bugle and has been seen by The Mercian Regiment Museum Worcestershire but to no avail. PRITCHARD has to be the soldier’s surname so can anyone recognise him? 16 The Gentleman This photo was probably taken somewhere between 1911 - 1920. Surname could be Davis or Davies with possible link to Menithwood / Pensax or Knighton upon Teme. www.temetriangle.net 97952 Teme Triangle April 2016_Triangle April 04.qxd 29/03/2016 13:29 page 17 MORE EVENTS BLUEBELL CROSS COUNTRY FUN RIDE WICHENFORD,WR6 6XYin aid of Air Ambulance St Richards Hospice and local charities Sunday 8th May 2016 and Monday the following weekend by appointment only. Apologies: Mr T Taylor, Mrs C Warren and District Councillor Mrs Palethorpe. Declaration of Interest: None. Minutes: The minutes for January 8th were approved as a true record and signed. Public Question Time: None. County Councillor’s report: County Councillor’s Report: Dr Pollock expanded on the written report circulated before the meeting. 1 Superfast Broadband. This will be rolled out to 90% of the county by June. Some of the properties in Shelsley Kings on the Great Witley cabinet will be able to apply for superfast broadband then but for properties in Shelsley Beauchamp and Shelsley Walsh it will not be available until 2017. Fibre will be connected to the Shelsley Walsh cabinet at some point enabling those within one mile to have superfast broadband. 2 Speeding. It was suggested that a 30 mph speed limit be imposed at Shelsley Walsh in the same manner as the other two wards of the Shelsleys. Failing that a temporary speed limit be imposed on Hill Climb event days. Another suggestion was suggested advisory speed limit signs. A police presence on event days may also deter speeding. 3 B4203. Two stretches of the B4203 have been resurfaced, the area in front of The Green is on the list to be resurfaced. There is also concern about the safety of the rippled edges below Stirt Farm. 4 Ham and New Mill bridges are in a bad state with accumulated rubbish. 5 Mud on roads caused by farmers and contractors not clearing it from the roads. The tree’s roots have caused blocked drains in the neighbourhood. A defibrillator is to be housed in the Pavilion. CLIFTON NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The draft version of the Neighbourhood Plan for Clifton upon Teme was formally approved by the Parish Council last month (March) and a series of public consultation events have since been held at which copies of the Plan were made available for local residents to look at and comment on. Helen Winer, Chair of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, said she was pleased with the response to the latest draft of the Plan. “We have had some very encouraging feedback from parishioners but we urge everyone to take a moment to comment on it and let us have their feedback,” she added. CLIFTON PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES Due to a change in administrative arrangements the Clifton Parish Council’s formal Minutes will, from now on, be published later than is practicable for Teme Triangle and so will be posted on the Parish Council website rather than in printed form. We shall however endeavour to keep you abreast of important issues that are raised, in our news section. For Minutes go to: www.temetriangle.net - then go to the Parish council page. Shelsleys’ Parish Council minutes will continue to be published by us in draft abbreviated form immediately after meetings. ST KENELM’S CHURCH FLOWER FESTIVAL – ADVANCE NOTICE Open Gardens and Mini Flower Festival on the first weekend in July Please put these dates in your diaries: Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July 2016. As before, we shall offer a ‘trail’ on the Saturday down the Old Road. Parking at the New Inn, for those not able to walk far, is available this time and already booked. (However, please remember to patronise the pub afterwards if you do park there!) On Sunday Clifton Village will open up gardens large and small and the whole weekend will end with The Friends’ Tea Party at Ayngstree – for all those who support the work of St Kenelms in whatever way. We’ll hopefully be arranging a jolly for the Saturday evening too – watch out for more details. Alice Sumner 26 www.temetriangle.net 97952 Teme Triangle April 2016_Triangle April 04.qxd 29/03/2016 13:29 page 27 COULD YOU HELP SAVE ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH? This winter we have had several large funerals at All Saints’ in Shelsley Beauchamp, we have welcomed a local family for the baptism of their children and later this year my own daughter is to be married. All these events bring the community together in different ways. Sadly this month discussions have begun to decide what will happen in our churches when John and Alice Sumner retire in September. One thing is for sure John will not be replaced by a priest. John told us: “The theme of death and resurrection goes all though Christianity and indeed all through life and this maybe happening right now in Shelsley Beauchamp. The old team of church wardens and Parochial Church Council members, worthy and hardworking as they were, is retiring or moving on and church attendances are regularly in single figures. The future is uncertain and we will soon have a vacuum which will threaten the legal and spiritual existence of All Saints, though it may still function for festivals.” “However a vacuum can create a space where new ideas and new people can feel free to step up.” “The tasks can be shared and include: Treasurer Buildings advisor Church warden to head a team (not needing to do everything themselves). Members of a welcome team.” “Oh and we pray and sing hymns too – that’s rather important!” Most local activities now operate on a rota system, as people have less and less time; church cleaning, flower rotas, Neighbourhood Watch. Teme Triangle itself has a team of guest editors so that no one person has to commit every month. You may have never thought of volunteering to help but please consider it now, if you want your church community to survive. Just a little time given by a group of people could ensure that our local church can continue to bring us together. For more information contact: Rev.
