How can objects tell us about people in the past? Pupils encounter highlights from the diverse collection at The Hunt Museum in a fun and accessible way. Pupils will build their observation skills through problem-solving, investigation, drawing and discussion. In an age-appropriate way, children explore artistic elements such as shape, line, colour, and texture. Children encounter simple historical concepts such as objects as evidence. What kinds of animals are hidden in the collection? Why do artists draw animals? How do artists imagine the animal? Do the animals look like animals you have seen in real life? Hunt for animals in the Museum’s galleries! Pupils will discover how animals have been depicted in art from ancient to modern times. Pupils will also encounter real and mythological animals. They will look at genuine artefacts from the era in the Hunt Museum’s Collections, examining these artefacts for clues on their use, construction and significance. Workshops are €3 per student (teachers go free) Duration: 1hr 30mins Learning outcomes • • • • Describe with more confidence aspects of their chosen time period Describe objects and their uses Explain key points about the importance of art in society, including in religious practice, myths and legends Explain key aspects of life from their chosen period such as diet, clothing and living conditions Collection Tours Discover the secrets of the Hunt Museum’s collection with our expert guides. Children will learn about the Hunt family, why museums are important and see real artefacts from the stone age to ancient Egypt to paintings by Picasso and Renoir. These boxes contain objects which can be used in class to aid learning. They provide hands on, active learning experiences to complement the curriculum. The boxes available are Archaeology and Vikings. Both come with a teacher’s pack to assist with lesson planning. Loan boxes can be collected from the museum and kept at your school for up to 10 days. There is also the option to have the box brought out to your school by a museum Docent (volunteer). Docents will deliver sessions in the school with the objects from the box. There are half day and full day options available as Docents can go to more than one class when they visit your school. Lessons will be tailored to the abilities of each class level. Participants will learn about the clothing of the past and the societies that wore it. Students will have the opportunity to dress up as Elizabethan nobility or medieval serfs. Yeats Suitable for 1st – 6th class Price: €3 pp Duration: 1hr 30mins Dante’s Inferno, Gerry Andrews Children will participate in an interactive tour of the Gerry Andrews Faces and Places photography exhibition, which will be peppered with activities enabling them to explore diverse geographical cultures and traditions. Through group work, they will identify different countries featured in exhibition photographs and will then locate them on a large map. There will also be plenty of discussion and creative activities enabling pupils to draw from and build on their existing knowledge of the world and its many different cultures. Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry: Contrasting Visions of Ireland Yeats and Henry had the ability to capture in their painting snapshots of the real Ireland. Yeats achieved this through his examination of Ireland’s rich sporting heritage and Henry through his landscapes of the west of Ireland. Through a short interactive tour, students will explore and interpret the work of these artists. Their visual literacy will be increased as they become familiar with key terms associated these paintings. Inspired by these artworks they will be asked to produce a postcard scene. They will imagine they live in this world and will write a note home to their family. Suitable for 1st – 6th class Price: €3 pp Duration: 1hr 30mins Teachers go free Bee Loud Glade: The Hunt Museum Bee Garden In connection with the conservation plan for the ‘Bee Loud Glade’ bee garden the Hunt Museum is offering school workshops about the importance of bees. Busy Bees workshops consist of a talk about the life of bees, meeting the bee keeper and getting to handle bee keeping tools. The children will then go and ’meet the bees’ – from a safe distance! At the end of the workshop they will make their own buzzy bee to take home with them to remind them how important bees are to our planet. Duration: 1hr 30mins Workshops cost €3 per student.
