Mrs. Chausse’s Chemistry Lesson Plan: Unit 5 Periodic Table October 10 – 19, 2016 Monday, October 10, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT determine the number of valence electrons for various elements in order to draw the Lewis structures (electron dot diagram) by using the electron configurations and by looking at the group numbers of the periodic table at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, notes, video Lesson plan: Do now: Students will copy the new table of contents for the unit Students will review the material from the previous two units (atomic numbers, how to calculate neutrons, write electron configuration) Students will watch a short video clip about Mendeleev and how he developed the periodic table https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPnwBITSmgU Students will take notes on Periodic Law and Lewis Structures Students will determine the number of valence electrons by writing the electron configurations for various elements and then drawing the Lewis structures for them in the periodic table Homework: finish worksheet Tuesday, October 11, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT code the periodic table for the different types of elements at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, colored pencils, periodic table, textbook Lesson plan: Do now: Students will draw the Lewis structures for three elements Students will review the answers to the previous day’s work Students will color code the periodic table Students will read the section of the textbook about the types of elements and take notes on some facts about each group Homework: finish color coding if not finished Wednesday, October 12, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT explain three different trends in the periodic table based on the number of electrons in each orbital at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, notes Lesson plan: Do now: Students will identify various elements as the type of element Students will draw a Bohr model for their given element on the piece of paper. The class will organize the papers so that we can notice a trend in atomic size across each period and down each group. Student will take notes on and discuss the three trends: atomic size, electronegativity, and ionization. Students will answer questions with their partners about the trends Homework: finish questions; make up day is tomorrow for quizzes and tests Thursday, October 13, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT write a lab report based on a lab manual at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, lab manual, loose-leaf paper Lesson plan: Do now: Students will identify the larger atom of two and state which one has a higher electronegativity and ionization by looking at their locations on the periodic table Students will review the work from the previous day; Students who are making up quizzes or tests will be allowed to make them up today in class but must be responsible for writing the lab report over the weekend. Students will review the format necessary for writing a lab report Students will use the class period to write their lab reports and create the data tables. Complete lab reports and data tables are required in order to complete the lab on Monday. No lab report, no lab. Students will have an alternative assignment! Homework: finish lab report Friday, October 14, 2016 –NO SCHOOL –TEACHER PD/RECORDS DAY GLE/Standard: Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now: Homework: Objective: SWBAT Monday, October 17 , 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT conduct a lab on element properties at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now: Students will gather safety apparel and put on the goggles and aprons. Students will review the procedure for the lab and safety measures. Students will identify element properties and the types of elements while conducting a lab Students will answer analysis questions based on their data from the experiment Homework: finish the lab report Tuesday, October 18, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT complete a review for the unit 5 test at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now: Students will submit their lab reports Students will review the material for the test Students will work with a partner on the study guide for the test Homework: study for test tomorrow Wednesday, October 19, 2016 GLE/Standard: Materials: periodic table, test Lesson plan: Do now: Students will get in their test taking seats Students will take the test Homework: none Objective: SWBAT take a test on unit 5 at 85% accuracy.
