Placeholders: A placeholder is simply a space on your slide where you eventually put things. It’s a box with dotted borders, and these boxes hold your titles, text, and objects, such as charts, images, and tables. Template: a file that contains the styles in a presentation, including the type and size of bullets and fonts; placeholder sizes and positions; background design; fill color schemes; and more. Using a template is the best way to make sure that your entire presentation has a uniform look and feel. CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 4 2016 This is the opening slide for a PowerPoint presentation. PowerPoint also includes other types of placeholders like the one pictured here. This is a quick way to add tables, charts, and pictures. When you add a slide to your presentation, you can select the layout for the new slide at the same time: o On the Home tab, in the Slides group, click the arrow next to New Slide. CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 8 2016 Exercise #2 1. Now, add a slide to your presentation – choose the Title and Content Layout 2. Type Practice for the Title 3. Type 3 names for the Content [press ENTER after each name] 9 Exercise #3 1. Add another slide without choosing the layout first. [It should default to the same layout as the previous slide.] 2. Click on Layout and select the Two Content layout. 3. Type More Practice in the Title area. 4. In the left content area, type the days (Monday – Friday) of the week, pressing Enter after each day, so that it is a list. 5. Add a New Slide with a layout of Picture with Caption. 2. On the Insert tab, click Picture, double-click the Sample Pictures folder, then select and insert a picture. 3. Add an appropriate title in place of the title placeholder. 4. Add “Picture taken by Your Name” to the text placeholder. 12 Tools tabs • When you click some parts of your slides, such as pictures, shapes, SmartArt or text boxes, you might see a colorful new tab appear. CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 • Picture Tools appears when you select a picture. • Drawing Tools appears when you click a shape or text box. • Other tabs include: SmartArt Tools, Chart Tools, Table Tools and Video Tools. • These tabs disappear or change when you click something else in your presentation. 13 2016 Tool tab: PICTURE TOOLS Adjust •Picture brightness •Recolor •Add artistic effects CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 Picture Styles Size •Add a border or frame •Change shape •Add picture effects 14 •Crop •Resize 2016 Exercise #5 1. Click on the picture you selected in Exercise #4 to activate the Picture Tools tab. 2. Select a Picture Style. [Notice that it “previews” each selection as you mouse over it.] 3. Adjust the color and add an artistic effect. You can also Reset Picture to revert back to original picture. 15 Tool tab: DRAWING TOOLS Insert Shapes •Lines •Arrows •Boxes •Geometric shapes CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 Shape Styles •Change shape •Add color or an outline •Add shape effects 16 •Make text stand out with special effects 2016 Exercise #6 Let’s add a shape to a slide. 1. Add a New Slide with a Blank layout. 2. In the Illustrations group, select a Shape and click anywhere on your slide. This opens the Drawing Tools tab. 3. Add other shapes. 4. Experiment with the various tools. 17 Toolbar: DESIGN Using the Design toolbar, you can select: • An overall theme • Color scheme • Slide and handout orientation (landscape vs. portrait) CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 18 2016 Toolbar: SLIDE SHOW Using the Slide Show toolbar, you can: • View your presentation from the Beginning • View from Current Slide • Set up your presentation to manually advance slides, use predetermined timings, or loop continuously CLPL Beginning PowerPoint 2013 19 2016 File Tab – Office Backstage • Open • Save | Save As • Print (including Print Preview) • Share CLPL - Beginning Excel 2013 20 File Tab – Save | Save As While you’ll use Save to save an existing presentation in its current location, you need to use Save As to save your presentation in a different location or to create a copy of your presentation in the same or another location. Click File > Save As Pick the place where you want to save your presentation. For example, to save to your desktop or in a folder on your computer, click Computer. Select the desired location 21 File Tab - Open • Click the File tab Click Open Choose from the list of the recently used presentations, or Search other locations 22 File Tab – Print | Print Preview • Click on the File Tab and select Print • You get a Preview of your presentation and have access to Print Settings: • Print layouts • Handouts • Printing in color, grayscale, or black and white CLPL - Beginning Excel 2013 23 File Tab – Share 24 PowerPoint Templates Microsoft offers templates for business, education and personal use One advantage is that all of the formatting has been done for you – you just need to fill in the blanks To see these templates, click on the File Tab and select New 25 CLPL - Beginning Excel 2013 Going Forward Learning Express Library and lynda.com Online computer skills tutorials.
