Access to Higher Education
Suitable combinations of subjects allow you to progress to a wide variety
of higher education degree courses.
What is the Access Course?
The Access Course is a programme of study for mature students students who have been out of education for some time. It leads to the
nationally recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma for entry to
university in this country.
The course can be used to enhance your career prospects - the Access
course is especially designed for mature students who are returning to
study. We offer a combination of daytime and evening classes to suit
your individual needs
What are the entry requirements?
See individual subjects for their entry requirements. When we receive
your application we will invite you into College for an informal
discussion with one of our experienced adult guidance staff.
What will you do on the course?
To achieve the full Access Diploma you will study three modules
over one or two years. This qualifies you for university entrance and
gives you the nationally recognised diploma. Each module requires
approximately three hours attendance at College each week and you
are expected to spend time completing private study. As the courses
are intensive, full attendance of lessons is essential in order for you to
be successful. If you are a daytime student you will also have tutorial
sessions. Wherever possible, daytime classes are timetabled between
9.30am and 3.00pm to enable children to be taken to and collected
from school. Full details of the modules are enclosed. To achieve
the full Access Diploma, you will also need to complete the Study
Skills Module which will be completed alongside one of your subject
modules.
Access to Higher Education
How is the course assessed?
You are fully supported by your teachers so don’t worry about this. Much
of the assessment is by coursework, assignments and written projects
throughout the year however in some modules there are end of course
examinations.
What does it cost?
Students who are 24 or older
You can apply for an FE loan from April 2014. The amount of the loan
will cover 100% of the cost of your course. You can go to the College’s
website for further information on loans - www.qeliz.ac.uk/24+
Advanced Learning Loans.
Students who are between the age of 19 - 23
There are tuition and examination fees but if you are in receipt of
certain benefits or if you have a certain educational profile, your
fees may be significantly reduced. For students on low income, the
College’s Learner Support Fund can provide assistance with resources.
Full details of the College’s fees are available on request.
Benefit entitlement?
If you are in receipt of benefits they will not be affected as long as you
fulfil the conditions for receiving them. We can offer advice on this.
What do you do now?
If you are interested, read on to find out more about the modules. The
course begins in September but we are enrolling students now. We
recommend early application.
If you require a College application form, further information or advice

with the aid of a calculator. Advice will be given at the start of the course
regarding the purchase of an appropriate calculator.

and written language around you! You will develop your skills of analysis in a
supportive group atmosphere. There will be emphasis on discussion, group work
and oral presentation as well as on independent research.

the skills and confidence necessary for the advanced study of the subject.
It will enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the past through
explanation and analysis and to make informed judgements of historical
concepts and contexts within a specific period. You will examine a range of
historical sources, consider historical controversies and produce a number of

The course provides a foundation for study at a higher level in biological
sciences or health studies. While on the course you will develop a knowledge
and understanding of cell biology and human physiology; an understanding
of the basic chemical concepts involved in metabolic and physiological
process; laboratory skills and the ability to analyse and present data.
Previous experience in the Science/Biology field is a huge advantage. Students
should note that most university midwifery courses require a distinction in
Human Biology Access. Entry requirements: GCSE Science grade C or above.
This course is offered during the day and also on an evening Thursday 6.30pm to 9.30pm.
Subjects

embraces activities as varied as the crime of bigamy to the law on clinical
negligence and copyright. The legal system is undergoing a period of
enormous change and new areas of law are emerging in the 21st Century.
This course aims to provide you with an appreciation of the role that law plays
in modern life and an understanding of the legal system. More importantly, it
aims to develop core legal skills that will equip you for study at degree level.

This is an evening course - Monday 6.30pm to 9.30pm.
Psychology
Fascinated by human behaviour and want to find out more?
Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour. It is a rapidly growing subject
