Florence and the Renaissance: the Art of Magnificence
Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and produced an unparalleled level of
artistic production and genius over three centuries. This lecture will examine the art,
architecture and history that makes this city and its art so extraordinary.
Aperitif and appetizers during the lecture followed by a Florentine Family Style Dinner with wine.
Rocky Ruggiero is originally from Cranston, RI and a graduate of Bishop
Hendricken High School (Class of ’91) and of the College of the Holy Cross
(Class of ’95). In 1996, he was the recipient of a prestigious “Florence
Fellowship” from Syracuse University and continued his studies in art
history at a graduate level in Florence, Italy. He lived in Florence, Italy, for
twenty years, teaching for various American universities such as Kent St.,
Syracuse and Boston College. Ruggiero has appeared as an expert witness on
various documentaries concerning the Italian Renaissance such as the History
Channel’s series “Engineering and Empire: Da Vinci’s World” and “Museum
Secrets: the Uffizi Gallery”, as well as the recent National Geographic/PBS Nova
special entitled “Great Cathedral Mystery”.
In 2008, Ruggiero and his wife, Emilie, founded Rocky Ruggiero Cultural
Programs in Italy, a company which offers opportunities for educational
travel in various cities throughout Italy, covering subjects such as art history,
the culinary arts, Italian language and studio arts. In 2015, Ruggiero and his
family moved to East Greenwich, RI and he now divides his time between the
US and Italy. In the US, Cultural Programs offer specialized lectures in art and
architectural history, cultural events and educational seminars in Rhode Island
and throughout the US.
