Please read the following pair of novels: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison* One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn 1. After reading both novels, write two paragraphs comparing and contrasting the theme of invisibility. Be sure to include evidence from both of the texts to support your response. I do not want a formal essay, merely, your connections between these two novels in terms of invisibility/visibility. Consider the following questions: How are the narrator and Ivan alike? Different? How do the main characters perceive their visibility? What circumstances are each dealing with? How do their respective societies influence their invisibility? 2. Include another paragraph commenting on the structure of both Invisible Man and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Consider the following questions: How does the structure of the novel enhance the meaning of the work as a whole/theme? What is the author’s purpose in organizing the novel in this fashion? 3. In a final paragraph, make a personal connection by relating to a time when you have felt invisible or wanted to feel invisible. Relate your situation to Ivan or the narrator or both. These written responses must be typed and are due on the first day of school, Monday, August 7, 2017, to be turned in at the beginning of class, and then uploaded into Canvas (at a later date), so keep an electronic copy! If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] *Please do NOT read The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells
