It is a place of prayer & pilgrimage with: • Perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament • Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary • Frequent celebration of the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation • Integrated formation of the person (spiritual, moral, intellectual and emotional) Page 2 Our Lady of Peace June 26th, 2016 Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine Dear Parishioners, This coming Wednesday June 29th, we will celebrate, in union with the whole Church, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. These two Apostles, whom the liturgy calls the “Princes of the Apostles,” and were associated by the mysterious plan of divine Providence, despite their personal and cultural differences, in a single apostolic adventure. I thought it will be helpful for all of us in order to prepare ourselves for this great solemnity to reflect on the liturgical prayers for that day since they let us see the richness and importance of the celebration. First of all, we must say that these two saints have always been coupled together in the devotion of the Christian people. Saint Peter, a fisherman of Bethsaida, was chosen by Christ to be the foundation stone of his Church. Saint Paul, struck down on the road to Damascus, went from being a persecutor of Christians to the Apostle of the Gentiles. They both ended their life with martyrdom in the city of Rome, as we will read in the Preface, “Both shared a martyr’s death.” Through them the Lord “gave the Church the firstfruits of the Christian faith” (cf. Collect of the Mass in their honor). In the Opening Prayer of the Mass for the feast we’ll read that through the apostles Peter and Paul the Church “first received the faith,” and in the Opening Prayer of the Vigil (evening of June 28) we’ll refer to them as the “apostles who strengthened the faith of the infant Church.” In the Prayer after Communion for the vigil we’ll profess that this faith had its beginning in the teaching of these apostles. This apostolic faith is manifested, as it was at Jerusalem, in the breaking of the bread, the teaching of the apostles, the community that is of one heart and should through charity, and the prayers of the apostles. Consequently, we will pray for “love and unity” in the Prayer over the Gifts. In Rome, the city of the two apostles, the monument in the Palatine hill from which Caesar Augustus issued his decrees is reduced to archaeological ruins, but the Apostolic See which, according to St. Ignatius of Antioch, “presides over the charity of all the churches,” is rightly acclaimed as the Church of Rome, a Rome that was crimsoned by the blood of these two great leaders (cf. Office of Readings). Rightly, then, do we sing in the hymn of Morning Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours: Rejoice, O Rome this day; thy walls they once did sign With princely blood, who now their glory share with thee. What city’s vesture glows with crimson deep as thine? What beauty else has earth that may compare with thee. It is in the city of Rome where the successors of St. Peter have governed the Church for two-thousands years. Finally, the martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul is also a symbol of the unity of the Church, as St. Augustine says in the Office of Reading: “Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one.” This solemnity then, remind us all to pray for the Pope –Vicar of Christ and successor of Saint Peter– and all the bishops in union with him. They are the ones who manifest and preserve the apostolic tradition in the world. (Cf. II Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium, 20) To conclude, I leave you with St. Ignatius of Antioch’s advice: “Remain submitted to your bishop, just as Christ submitted himself to the Father…do not do anything against his will…united to the bishop, just as the Church is united to Christ and Christ to the Father, in order that, in all things, the harmony of unity may reign.” (Letter 66. VIII, 1) May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles and Mother of the Church, keep us always in the one flock of our Lord Jesus Christ. May God bless you all! Fr. LETTER FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Every six years the Institute of the Incarnate Word celebrates a General Chapter. Having been chosen to be one of the Chapter Fathers representing the Province of the Immaculate Conception, I will be absent from the parish during the whole month of July to take part in an 8-day Spiritual Exercises and later to participate on the General Chapter itself. However, all scheduled activities in our parish will continue to run as smoothly as always. Remember that this is a very busy summer and I’ll love to hear from my brothers priests who stay here that you are taking part of all the events in great numbers. If all goes as planned, I’ll look forward to seeing you all on my return. Until then…have a wonderful summer! Please, keep me in your prayers as I will keep all of you in mines, especially during the sacrifice of the Mass. God bless you all! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE Pastor of Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine. This program consists of 33 days of prayer and exercises which help purify souls to prepare one for Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary. In this program, there are two different periods assigned to these exercises: The first period includes 12 days of exercises employed in casting off the spirit of the world which is contrary to Jesus Christ The second period consists of 3 weeks: the first devoted to the Knowledge of Ourselves, the second devoted to the Knowledge of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the third devoted to that of Jesus Christ. The program also includes going to Confession prior to Consecration and Holy Communion on consecration day with the intention of giving oneself to Jesus Christ as slaves of love by the hands of Mary. A prayer book with information and instructions will be provided at the start of the program. There will also be Spiritual Talks by IVE and guest priests starting with an Introductory Talk on the first Saturday at the onset of the 33 days, and every Saturday thereafter until one’s consecration day on November 19, 2016.
