SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT Mountain Dew Lantern Amanda Bowman| Mrs. McNees| Syracuse Junior High School STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM • Can you make a bottle of Mountain Dew glow with just a few ingredients? RESEARCH • Summarize your research here in three to five significant facts: – You can make a nightlight by mixing household ingredients. – It calls for Mountain Dew, but you may not even need soda to make it work. – You can get a chemiluminescence reaction from this experiment. • Citations (your sources of where you found the information) Include Author, Title of the work, Year published, and page # – http://chemistry.about.com/b/2013/05/23/glow-in-the-dark-mountain-dew-2.htm – http://www.pinterest.com/pin/26880928995836499/ HYPOTHESIS • If you mix all the ingredients together and shake the bottle to mix them, then it will glow because of the chemiluminescence reaction. PROCEDURE: MATERIALS • ½ cup Mountain Dew in a plastic bottle • ½ teaspoon of dish soap • The contents from 1 or more glow sticks • 3 capfuls of hydrogen peroxide • 2 pinches of baking soda PROCEDURE: STEPS 1. Pour out all but ½ cup of Mountain Dew from the bottle. 2. Add the dish soap. 3. Cut open the glow sticks and pour in the contents. 4. Add the hydrogen peroxide. 5. Add the baking soda. 6. Place lid on bottle and turn off lights. 7. Shake the bottle vigorously for about 20 seconds. 8. Watch it glow! VARIABLES • Constants: The amount of Mountain Dew and the size of the bottle. • Controlled variables: The amount of the other ingredients will be tested. • Independent (manipulated) variable: The amount of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. • Dependent (measured) variable: The brightness of the Mountain Dew lantern and the amount of time it glows. DATA/OBSERVATIONS • We tested this experiment twice. • The first time the glow wasn’t very bright because we didn’t use enough ingredients and didn’t shake it up long enough. • The second time we used more ingredients to get a larger and brighter glow. It worked much better after shaking for a longer period of time as well. CONCLUSION • It was stated on the internet that this did not work for some people. It worked well for us after the second time and testing different amounts of ingredients. • The chemiluminescence reaction really does work when following the instructions in this experiment. • My hypothesis was supported by the data in this experiment and it really did work.
