Schilling: Johnson greatest lefty hurler of all time
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
http://m.dbacks.mlb.com/news/article/105958124/curtschilling-calls-randy-johnson-greatest-lefty-pitcher-of-all-time
Spring is officially on the horizon.
Major League Baseball announced the first Spring Training
workout dates for all 30 of its clubs on Thursday. Pitchers and
catchers for the reigning World Series champion Giants -- along
with the Phillies, Pirates and Reds -- will be the first to work out,
with a Feb. 19 start date. Thirteen other clubs will work out
pitchers and catchers for the first time the following day.
PHOENIX -- Curt Schilling was an accomplished pitcher before
the 2000 trade that brought him to the D-backs to team with
Randy Johnson, but over the four years that followed, Schilling
took his game to another level.
The right-hander joined the D-backs midway through the 2000
season, and one year later, he and Johnson combined to go 4312 as Arizona rolled to the National League West title.
Eventually, the pair would be named co-Most Valuable Player
Award winners after the D-backs' thrilling seven-game World
Series win against the Yankees.
That's right, folks: Just 42 days until the first pitches of the 2015
season are thrown.
The first full-squad workouts will take place on Feb. 24. Those
four teams will be joined by the Marlins, White Sox, Indians and
Tigers as the first to have their entire team begin working out.
"I picked up a lot," Schilling said of his time with Johnson. "I
don't know about him, but I was competing with him. That was
what made it fun. R.J. was like, I guess I would compare him to
like the early career of Tiger Woods -- every day you watched
him, you were pretty sure you were going to see one thing you
had never seen before. There were games that you saw a lot of
things that you've never seen before."
The Phillies will play the University of Tampa on March 1 in the
first Spring Training game for any team. Grapefruit and Cactus
League play will kick off two days later, with a slate that features
five games between big league clubs.
The Twins, Rays and Blue Jays will be the final three clubs to
begin working out, with pitchers and catchers set for action on
Feb. 23. The Rays and Twins won't go through their first fullsquad workouts until Feb. 28, the latest date for any team.
Johnson was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on
Tuesday with 97.3 percent of the vote, and while he put together
excellent seasons with the Mariners, his best four-year stretch
came with the D-backs.
Here's a full breakdown of the initial workout dates for pitchers
and catchers for each club (with the first full-squad workout in
parentheses).
From 1999-2002, Johnson won four straight NL Cy Young
Awards. Schilling was nearly as good, finishing second to
Johnson in the Cy Young voting in 2001 and 2002.
Thursday, Feb. 19
Cincinnati Reds (Feb. 24)
Philadelphia Phillies (Feb. 24)
Pittsburgh Pirates (Feb. 24)
San Francisco Giants (Feb. 24)
They were different personalities, though, with Schilling the
more outgoing of the two, whereas Johnson admitted to being
"wound pretty tight" during his career.
Friday, Feb. 20
Arizona Diamondbacks (Feb. 25)
Baltimore Orioles (Feb. 25)
Chicago Cubs (Feb. 25)
Chicago White Sox (Feb. 24)
Cleveland Indians (Feb. 24)
Detroit Tigers (Feb. 24)
Kansas City Royals (Feb. 25)
Los Angeles Angels (Feb. 25)
Los Angeles Dodgers (Feb. 26)
Miami Marlins (Feb. 24)
Oakland A's (Feb. 25)
St. Louis Cardinals (Feb. 25)
San Diego Padres (Feb. 25)
"I always thought, 'You've got to enjoy the game more,' but I
realized that I don't think he would have been who he was if he
had been like me," Schilling said. "If he had been outgoing and
all the other things. One of the things I took away is when you
watched him pitch when it was 10-1, he was still grinding. Like
hard. He didn't have a neutral, he didn't have a second or third
gear. It was pedal to the metal until the last out. That's certainly
not a modern-day mentality."
Schilling realized that Johnson set the bar for his performance so
high, it was almost impossible to reach it, yet with his talent,
work ethic and intensity he was able to achieve it.
"I got a chance to watch a guy that I think, if you take the era
into consideration, he's the greatest left-hander of all-time,"
Schilling said. "You can say what you want about other guys, but
no left-hander ever dominated the game. I mean look, [Sandy]
Koufax was phenomenal and he would have been great at any
time, but he didn't pitch in this era. Any pitcher that has a Hall
of Fame career in the era that R.J. had it in is a big deal, because
we played at the height of the era -- the steroids and everything."

With veteran infielder Cliff Pennington avoiding arbitration and

the odd man out appears to be Nick Ahmed.
D-backs' spring training tickets on sale Saturday; first
workout Feb. 20
By FOX Sports Arizona
http://www.foxsports.com/arizona/story/d-backs-springtraining-tickets-go-on-sale-saturday-first-workouts-on-feb-20010815
Appearing in 25 games with the Diamondbacks last season,
Ahmed, who hit .200 (14-for-70, one home run, four RBIs) was
on target to compete with Didi Gregorius for the shortstop
position and Owings to supplant Hill at second. Just before the
5
│
winter meetings last month, Gregorius was dealt to the Tigers
and then finally to the Yankees in a three-team transaction.
Position players report on Feb. 25 and officially work out for the
first time the following day.
In effect, the deal moved Hill back into the picture as the
everyday second baseman, Owings back to short, where he
played in the minors and Ahmed and Pennington as reserves.
The Cuban-born Tomas will be given an opportunity to win the
everyday job at third base this spring.
All workouts are open to the public and fans are encouraged to
park in the Desert Lot on the north side of the Salt River
complex.
Now, the Diamondbacks have a decision to make.
The Diamondbacks also announced tickets for all spring training
games at Salt River go on sale this Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
at Salt River ticket windows.
SPRING TRAINING TICKETS AVAIALBLE
Should Punto shine in spring training and awarded a spot on the
25-man roster, the Diamondbacks could send Ahmed back to
the minors. As well, Ahmed could be packaged in a late, offseason deal for a possible starting pitcher, a catcher, a lefthanded bat or additional help in the bullpen.
Ticket prices range from $9 to $28 for all games, including the
opener against Arizona State on March 3. General admission
lawn tickets, which holds 4,000 fans, are priced at $9 each and
seats in the bowl area are priced $19-28.
For now, Punto is not assured of a roster spot but his $2.75
million salary for 2015 will be picked up by Oakland, his last
employer.
The Diamondbacks set a complex attendance record of 12,871
for a game against Milwaukee last March 18.
Punto comes to camp with as a lifetime .245 hitter and played
for the Phillies, the Twins, the Cardinals, the Red Sox, the
Dodgers and the A’s. His best year was 2006 when the native of
San Diego hit .290 for Minnesota.
Their complex neighbors, the Colorado Rockies, supply the first
major league opposition of the spring with a game on March 4 at
1:10 p.m.

Band program receives a $5,000 D-backs grant
By Michelle Hirsh / Wrangler News
Colleague and SweetSpot contributor Mark Simon had a fun
idea: What were the 10 greatest games pitched by new Hall of
Famers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz?
(PDF attached)
The easiest way to determine those 10 games is by searching
Baseball-Reference for Game Score -- the metric Bill James
designed as a simple way to measure the effectiveness of a
pitcher’s start. James gives a point total based on the pitcher's
innings, strikeouts and runs, hits and walks allowed. A Game
Score of 90 is outstanding. There were just 21 such starts in the
majors in 2014.
US govt. clears Cuban flamethrower Lopez to sign
By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/106008448/united-statesgovernment-clears-cuban-flamethrower-yoan-lopez-to-sign
Cuban right-handed pitching prospect Yoan Lopez has been
cleared by the United States government, and he is expected to
sign with a Major League team before the start of Spring
Training, according to industry an source.
Not surprisingly, considering the volume of high-strikeout
games in his career, Johnson has more 90-plus Game Scores (20)
than Martinez (12) and Smoltz (6) combined.
The D-backs, Dodgers, Padres and Yankees are among the
teams to express strong interest in the 21-year-old starter,
although other clubs could be in the mix now that the pitcher
can officially sign a contract.
But we can't go just on Game Score alone. Too boring. So, using
some judgment on my part, here are the 10 greatest
performances from these pitchers with a link to each box score:
Lopez throws a cut fastball, a change, a curve and a slider, but he
is best known for a fastball that has reached 100 mph and usually
hovers in the 93-95 mph range. In Cuba, Lopez played three
seasons for Isla de la Juventud in Serie Nacional, the island's top
league. He sported a 3.12 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 11 walks
in 49 innings in his final season before defecting.
10. Randy Johnson: Nov. 4, 2001
Fun Johnson facts: Perhaps the two most memorable outings of
his career actually came in relief. The first came when he was
with the Mariners. In Game 5 of the 1995 Division Series against
the Yankees, Johnson entered in the ninth with two runners on
and no outs -- and escaped the inning. He pitched the 10th and
the 11th (giving up a run), but Edgar Martinez's double drove in
Joey Cora and Ken Griffey Jr. and the Mariners won their first
playoff series in history, saved baseball in Seattle, got Buck
Showalter fired and got Joe Torre hired ... which all led to the
Yankees dynasty that won four World Series in five years.
It's already been quite a journey for Lopez.
He established residency in Haiti and was declared a free agent
by Major League Baseball late last year. He was cleared by the
Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States
Department of the Treasury this week.
Then came Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, when Johnson,
then with the Diamondbacks, threw the 17 most important
pitches of his life. He had thrown seven innings the day before -and 104 pitches -- but when Curt Schilling couldn't finish off
Game 7, Johnson came on to get the final out of the eighth with
a runner on and then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth. After the
Diamondbacks rallied in the bottom of the ninth, Johnson had
his third win of the series and his only World Series
championship.
Lopez held a showcase for all teams in November, and he
participated in private workouts in the weeks that followed. He
has been working out in the Dominican Republic.
Because he is under 23 and did not play in a Cuban professional
league for at least five seasons, Lopez is subject to the
international signing guidelines. In accordance with the
Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team is allotted a
$700,000 base and a bonus pool based on the team's record in
2013 for the international signing period, which started on July
2.
9. John Smoltz: Sept. 6, 1998
Smoltz's best Game Score was a 93, not in his Game 7
performances against the Pirates in the 1991 NLCS or the 1991
World Series against the Twins. Not Game 5 of the 1996 World
Series against the Yankees. But rather this regular-season game
against the Mets.
It's uncertain how much money Lopez will command now that
he is eligible to sign. What is certain is the Yankees, Rays, Red
Sox and Angels have spent more than 15 percent of their
allotted bonus pools and are in the maximum penalty range for
the 2014-15 signing period. The penalty includes a 100 percent
tax on their pool overage and prohibits them from signing any
pool-eligible player for more than $300,000 during the next two
signing periods.
I've been to a few hundred Mets games, and this was definitely
the best-pitched one I’ve seen in person. (My father could top
me; he was at Jim Bunning’s perfect game.) Smoltz struck out
13, walked none and pitched a three-hitter that (at least
according to my memory) could easily have been a perfect game.
The Angels were thrust into the maximum penalty on Tuesday
after signing Cuban infielder Roberto Baldoquin for $8 million.
The Mets had a bit of a rough lineup that night, with Lenny
Harris hitting fifth and Jorge Fabregas hitting sixth, and Larry
Vanover (to my recollection) had a very wide plate -- six of the
strikeouts were looking -- but this 3-0 win was dominance at its
finest. --Mark Simon

│
8. Johnson: Sept. 16, 1992
At some point in 1992, a young, wild Johnson had a talk with
Nolan Ryan. Johnson points to that chat as a turning point for
his career. While 1993 was Johnson's breakout season, he
showed signs of what was to come during this late-season
outing. In a duel against former Mariner Mark Langston,
Johnson allowed just one hit in nine innings while striking out 15
and walking one, good for a Game Score of 97. The one hit was
a ground-ball single to Hubie Brooks in the fourth, and an error
later in the inning led to unearned run. Langston had a pretty fair
game himself: He pitched 10 innings and struck out 12. Neither
pitcher got a decision, though, as the game went 13 innings.
3. Martinez: Aug. 29, 2000
I remember watching this one on TV. Pedro nailed Gerald
Williams of the Devil Rays to lead off the bottom of the first,
triggering an ugly brawl. Williams may have knocked Pedro
down during the fight, but Martinez showed that you don't mess
with him. He pitched a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts,
earning a Game Score of 98. The only hit was John Flaherty's
leadoff single in the ninth.
2. Martinez: Sept. 10, 1999
When people talk about Pedro's greatest games, this -- or that
relief outing against the Indians -- is usually the one they
reference.
7. Smoltz: Oct. 17, 1991
As Mark mentioned, this wasn't the highest Game Score of
Smoltz's career, nor even his highest postseason Game Score,
but it came against the Pirates, on the road, in Game 7 of the
NLCS. He pitched a six-hit shutout with eight K's in a 4-0
victory, good for a Game Score of 82. He threw 123 pitches, 82
for strikes, but more important this was the game that got the
Braves' dynasty rolling and established Smoltz as the team's
postseason ace.
This game came against the powerful Yankees lineup that
featured Chuck Knoblauch, Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill, Bernie
Williams and Tino Martinez. Pedro allowed just one hit, no
walks and struck out 17, including the side in the bottom of the
ninth, and tied his career best in strikeouts. (I was at the other
game, a 1-0 loss to Steve Trachsel of Tampa Bay in 2000 in
which Trachsel struck out 11 and allowed just three hits.) The
Game Score of 98 matches Martinez's career high, set two other
times. The only flaw: The one hit was a Chili Davis home run in
the second inning, off what looked like a 1-1 changeup.
6. Pedro Martinez: Oct. 11, 1999
Pedro had started Game 1 of the Division Series but left after
four innings because of a bad back, which left him unable to
start Game 5. But with the game tied 8-8 in the fourth, Martinez
put his career on the line, entered the game and proceeded to
throw six hitless innings against a scary Cleveland lineup that
included Kenny Lofton, Roberto Alomar, Manny Ramirez, Jim
Thome, Harold Baines and Travis Fryman and had scored a
combined 1,009 runs. Here are the highlights of this legendary
relief appearance.
Here are highlights of the game. I love the Dominican flags
waving at Yankee Stadium.
1. Johnson: May 18, 2004
This was Johnson's perfect game against the Braves. He had 13
strikeouts and a Game Score of 100 -- one of just 11 nine-inning
games in history in which a pitcher recorded a Game Score of
100 or higher.
5. Johnson: May 8, 2001
This was Johnson's record-tying 20-strikeout game, good for a
Game Score of 97. It came in Arizona, but I have to discount it
just a bit: That was an ugly Reds lineup -- Donnie Sadler, Juan
Castro and Alex Ochoa hit first, second and cleanup -- and
Johnson also gave up a run, although he allowed just three hits
with no walks. Here are the highlights.
While 2004 was the first year players faced punishment for a
positive steroids test, it was still in the middle of the highoffense/small-strike-zone era. In fact, 2004 saw slightly more
runs scored per game than 2001, when Barry Bonds broke Mark
McGwire's home run record, or 1998, when McGwire and
Sammy Sosa eclipsed Roger Maris.
On the other hand, the Braves didn't roll out the toughest of
lineups that night. They did have Chipper Jones and Andruw
Jones hitting 3-4 and J.D. Drew sixth, but somebody named
Jesse Garcia hit leadoff (I have zero recollection of him, but he
played sparingly in seven different seasons with a career average
of .216); 45-year-old Julio Franco, who actually hit .309 that year,
batted second; and Mark DeRosa (who had some good years,
but hit just .239 in 2004) batted seventh, followed by Nick
Green. Johnson threw 117 pitches, 87 for strikes.
Johnson ended up with a no-decision as the game went extra
innings. Here's an interesting note: A starter has gone nine
innings and earned a Game Score of 97 or higher in 63 games.
The pitchers are 57-0 in those games. Two of the no-decisions
belong to Johnson. Two also belong to Walter Johnson. (Matt
Harvey and Van Mungo are the others.)
4. Martinez: June 3, 1995
Martinez never threw a no-hitter, but he came close for the
Expos in this game against the Padres. He actually threw nine
perfect innings but the score remained 0-0 as Joey Hamilton
matched Pedro. The Expos scored in the top of the 10th, so
Martinez went back out to the mound, but Bip Roberts led off
with a double to right. Even though Martinez had thrown only
96 pitches, Felipe Alou went to the bullpen. Mel Rojas managed
to get Montreal out of the inning, so at least Martinez got the
win.
Johnson had 46 starts in which he struck out more than 13
batters, but a perfect game is a perfect game. It's hard to argue
against this being his best ever. Here's the final out.

offseason business while acknowledging that there's still time for
its prognosis to change. Teams will be presented in reverse order
of finish from 2014.
Far less expected was the trade that sent rotation stalwart Miley
to the Red Sox. Miley, who is arbitration eligible for the first
time this winter, had regressed from his All-Star rookie season
but had nonetheless established himself as a valuable leagueaverage starter across 404 innings in the last two years. In return
for his final three team-controlled seasons, Stewart landed four
years of De La Rosa, all six of Webster's team-controlled seasons
and another 20-year-old lottery ticket in switch-hitting infielder
Raymel Flores. De La Rosa, Webster, and Ray will likely
compete for the fifth spot in the rotation in camp, with
Hellickson, who was acquired from the Rays in November,
taking over Miley's spot in the rotation.
Arizona Diamondbacks
2014 Results: 64-98 (.395), fifth place in NL West (Hot Stove
Preview)
Key Departures: C Miguel Montero, SS Didi Gregorius, LHP
Wade Miley
Key Arrivals: MGR Chip Hale, RF/3B Yasmany Tomas, RHP
Jeremy Hellickson, RHP Rubby De La Rosa, RHP Allen
Webster, RHP Robbie Ray
Hellickson, who turns 28 in April, has just two team-controlled
years remaining and hits arbitration this winter coming off a
$3.625 million salary (as well as a season largely lost to elbow
surgery), but there are reasons to be optimistic about him.
Hellickson's strikeout rate has increased each of the last three
seasons and his fielding independent pitching mark has
decreased each of the last two. Mix in the fact that the elbow
surgery was simply to remove some loose bodies, that he
finished the season healthy and in the Rays' rotation, and that his
poor September can be at least partially blamed on a spike in
batting average on balls in play, and there's reason to hope that
he can have a breakout season in his first year in the NL.
However, he will be moving from a pitcher-friendly ballpark to a
hitter-friendly one and is a fly-ball pitcher who could develop a
problematic home-run rate. Hellickson cost the Diamondbacks
teenage leftfielder Justin Williams, their second-round pick in
2013 and a legitimate prospect, and switch-hitting shortstop
Andrew Velazquez, who impressed as a 19-year-old in a repeat
of A-ball last year.
The Diamondbacks were one of just two teams that entered this
offseason without a notable member of their major league roster
reaching free agency, but rookie general manager Dave Stewart
managed to stay busy nonetheless. Over the winter, he's made
four big trades and landed one of the offseason's most highlyprized free-agent hitters: 24-year-old Cuban defector Yasmany
Tomas, an outfielder with big-time power whom the
Diamondbacks hope will be the major league's next Cuban star.
They're also hoping the strong-armed Tomas can be their third
baseman, which may be asking a bit much.
At worst, Tomas will be a one-tool power-hitter like Mark
Trumbo, whom the Angels briefly tried at the hot corner in
2012. However, his upside is significant enough for the
Diamondbacks to have signed him to a six-year, $68.5 million
contract. That contract has a curious structure, as $32.5 million
of those dollars are stashed in the final two seasons of that deal
as part of a two-year player option. That means that, after the
2018 season, Tomas, who will turn 28 that November, can either
opt out of his contract in search of a big payday or take the
guaranteed money for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. There is no
guarantee that Tomas will be an impact player, and he may
require some time in the minors to start the season since he
hasn't played competitive baseball for a full year, but he's at the
very least a fascinating and affordable gamble.
Unfinished Business: Catcher, third base
With Montero now a Cub, the only catchers on the
Diamondbacks' 40-man roster are 31-year-old backup Tuffy
Gosewisch and 21-year-old Rule 5 pick Oscar Hernandez, who
hadn't cracked A-ball before Arizona drafted him onto their 25man roster in December. Throw expected non-roster invitees
Jordan Pacheco, Matt Pagnozzi and Blake Lalli in the mix, and
Arizona still doesn't have a viable everyday major league catcher,
or even a workable platoon. Of course, there are still six weeks
until pitchers and catchers are due to report, so Stewart has time
to fill the position he only vacated a month ago. In the
immediate wake of the Montero trade, Stewart acknowledged
the Blue Jays' Dioner Navarro and the Tigers' Alex Avila as
potential trade targets, but said he was not interested in free
agent Geovany Soto, who is now the top remaining free agent
catcher on the market.
Of the four trades, two were expected. The Diamondbacks
finally pared down their shortstop glut by flipping Gregorius to
the Yankees in a three-way trade that netted pitching prospect
Ray and infield prospect Domingo Leyba from the Tigers.
Neither player is guaranteed to be anything at the major league
level, but Ray is a live lefthanded arm who made his major
league debut last year, and Leyba is a compelling second base
prospect who won't turn 20 until September. With Chris
Owings, who is a year and a half younger than Gregorius, having
claimed the shortstop job and slick-fielding Nick Ahmed
emerging as a team-controlled backup, Gregorius was
expendable, and Stewart did well to get two players with upside
for him.
The Diamondbacks are not likely to add a third baseman,
however, as they hope that Tomas will fill that position. They
also have prospects Jake Lamb, who made his major league
debut last year, and Brandon Drury, who cracked Double A last
year, in line behind him. However, Tomas seems unlikely to stick
at the hot corner, and Lamb, who hit .230/.263/.373 as the
primary third baseman in August and September of last year, is
no sure thing either. Drury, the better prospect of the two, is
unlikely to be ready this year and shouldn't be rushed.
Soon after trading Gregorius, Stewart sent Montero to the Cubs
in a straight salary dump, one that rid the team of a 31-year-old
catcher owed $40 million over the next three years. In exchange,
Arizona got a pair of minor league righthanders: Zack Godley, a
closer who turns 25 in April and will likely make his Double A
debut this season, and 20-year-old Jeferson Mejia, a scrawny, 6foot-7 lottery ticket.
Preliminary Grade: C-
9
│
The minus is for the lack of a replacement for Montero, a
situation I fully expect to be resolved by the time we do our final
grades in mid-February. The C reflects the fact that the
Diamondbacks' offseason, while compelling, has not obviously
improved the team. There's certainly upside to the moves
Stewart has made, and the logic behind dumping Montero's
contract, thinning the shortstop glut, and trading for rotation
depth and prospects is not difficult to suss out. Still, it's easy to
see it all fizzling, Tomas included (particularly given that he'll not
only be adjusting to a new country and league in March, but a
new position, as well).
My last day being Eddie Plank at the Hotel, first @MLB pitcher
to win 300 games.Been an amazing 3 days Thank-You
---It's a fitting name for Johnson to use. Plank pitched in the early
1900s and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946.
Hotel workers who are also baseball fans may be a little creeped
out by Plank's name on a reservation, but imagine their surprise
when Johnson shows up.
The Diamondbacks should be better in 2015 simply by virtue of
being healthier (Paul Goldschmidt, Owings, Trumbo,
centerfielder A.J. Pollock and ace Patrick Corbin, among others,
all missed significant time in 2014) and because it takes a team
far worse than this one to lose 98 games two years in a row. The
value of the players Stewart has added to the organization,
however, remains to be seen.

The Rotary Club of Reno will host the Reno Aces Hot Stove
Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 26, at Harrah's Reno. A buffetstyle lunch will be served prior to Aces radio broadcaster Ryan
Radtke leading a baseball panel discussion with Aces manager
Phil Nevin, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale and Arizona
Diamondbacks vice president/special assistant to the GM Bob
Gebhard.
Report: Chad Billingsley has received “multiple offers”
By D.J. Short / NBCSports.com
http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/08/report-chadbillingsley-has-received-multiple-offers/
FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the market for free
agent right-hander Chad Billingsley is “gaining momentum” and
he has received “multiple offers.”
The luncheon will be at Harrah's third floor Nevada Ballroom,
West Tower .
No word on who the offers are from, but we heard earlier this
offseason that the Diamondbacks were interested. It makes
sense as a potential fit on the surface, as Billingsley’s agent used
to be Dave Stewart, who is now the general manager for
Arizona. However, the Diamondbacks have a lot of options for
their rotation already and Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo
should be back by midseason after Tommy John surgery.
Tickets are $15 for season-ticket holders, $20 for general public
and $25 at the door. Space is limited on a first-come, first-serve
basis. The pre-sale ticket deadline is noon, Jan 19. To reserve
tickets call Aces communications manager Chad Seely at 775334-7089 or e-mail at [email protected].
The Aces open the 2015 season April 9 at Albuquerque, and
host the Isotopes April 17.
Billingsley hasn’t pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy
John surgery in April of 2013. The 30-year-old had another
surgery last June, this time to repair a torn flexor tendon in his
elbow, but he’s expected to be ready for spring training. He will
likely have to settle for an incentive-laden contract, similar to
what we saw with the Padres and Josh Johnson.
Nevin, Parrott, Gross all returning to Aces in 2015

The Aces' coaching staff is rounded out by pitching coach Mike
Parrott, hitting coach Greg Gross and coach Luis Urueta.
Athletic Trainer Joe Metz and Strength and Conditioning Coach
Mike Schofield will also return to the club. Parrott has been a
member of the Aces staff since the team moved to Reno in
2009.
Billingsley owns a 3.65 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 over
190 starts and 29 relief appearances in the majors.
Randy Johnson uses another Hall of Famer's name to
check into hotels
By Jasmine Watkins / Sporting News

Nevin, 43, was named the second manager in Reno Aces history
in November 2013. He guided the Aces to a Pacific Coast
League-best 81-63 record and a berth to the Pacific Coast
League Championship Series last season. The 81 wins tied the
2012 franchise record for most wins in a season.
Randy Johnson is big-time now.
The left-handed pitcher is so big he needs to use an alternate
name to check into hotels. What better name to use than Eddie
Plank? Like Johnson, Plank was a lefty and a good one to boot.
Gettysburg Eddie won 326 games, most of them with the
Philadelphia Athletics.
---Randy Johnson
Nevin starred at Cal-State Fullerton, leading the Titans to the
1992 College World Series where he was named the Most
Outstanding Player. He was also named the Golden Spikes
Award Winner and College Player of the Year by Collegiate
Baseball and Baseball America. He was drafted by the Houston
Astros as the first overall selection in the 1992 amateur draft.

Nevin spent 12 years in Major League Baseball, amassing over
1,200 games played. He was a National League All-Star in 2001
when he hit .306 with 41 home runs and 126 RBI.
Earlier this week, the defending Northwest League champion
Hillsboro Hops announced their coaching staff for the
upcoming 2015 season.
Parrott, 60, enters his 14th season as Arizona's Triple-A pitching
coach, and 19th overall with the organization. Under Parrott's
direction in 2014, the team's 4.36 ERA was a franchise-low.
Parrott was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles as the 15th overall
selection in the 1973 amateur draft. He spent one season with
the Orioles in 1977 and another four seasons with the Seattle
Mariners. He won 14 games with the Mariners in 1979 and threw
13 complete games.
The Hops will be managed by former Major League outfielder
Shelley Duncan. The third-year franchise’s coaching staff will
include 1990 National League Cy Young Award-winner Doug
Drabek, who returns to Hillsboro for his third year as Hops
pitching coach, plus Javier Colina, who spent 14 years as a
minor-league infielder. Hillsboro native and former major
leaguer Ben Petrick will be with the Hops for his third year as
consultant.
Gross, 62, returns for his third season as the Aces hitting coach
after spending 2010-12 as the hitting coach of the Philadelphia
Phillies. Under Gross, the Aces finished 2014 among offensive
league leaders in: hits (1st - 1,480), average (2nd - .293), doubles
(2nd - 296), triples (2nd - 51), OBP (2nd - .359), runs (2nd 790), total bases (3rd - 2,259) and OPS (3rd - .806). Gross served
as the bench coach for the Phillies in 2001 and the hitting coach
from 2002-04. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the
fourth round of the 1970 amateur draft. Gross spent 17 seasons
in Major League Baseball, playing with the Astros, Cubs and
Phillies. He hit .314 in his rookie campaign with the Astros,
garnering The Sporting News Rookie of the Year honors.
“I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the team, about
the organization, the city, the whole atmosphere up there,” said
Duncan, who will be in his first season as a manager. “I’m
extremely excited about getting the opportunity to manage, and
to do it up in the Northwest, in the Portland area, is great. My
wife, Elyse, and I came to Portland for the Triple-A All-Star
Game in 2009, and we’ve loved it ever since.”
Duncan played at the University of Arizona and was drafted by
the New York Yankees in the second round in 2001. Six years
later, he made his major league debut with New York. He spent
parts of seven seasons in the major leagues — three with the
Yankees (2007-09), three with Cleveland (2010-12) and one with
Tampa Bay (2013).
Urueta, 33, enters his 14th season with the Diamondbacks
organization, and ninth in a coaching/coordinator role. He spent
the past two seasons as the manager of the Arizona League Dbacks. Urueta signed with the D-backs in 1998 as the first
Colombian to play for the organization. He went on to play five
Minor League seasons.
“We look forward to adding Shelley Duncan’s major league
experience and especially his postseason experience with the
Yankees to our staff,” said Hops general manager K.L.
Wombacher. “Doug Drabek is one of the best pitching coaches
at any level, and we’re really fortunate to get him back. And
Javier Colina and Ben Petrick have a wealth of baseball
experience and knowledge they will bring to our young players.”
Metz, 30, enters his fourth season as Athletic Trainer with Reno.
He is in his seventh season with the Diamondbacks medical
staff, beginning his professional career in 2009 with the Rookielevel Missoula Osprey. Schofield, 28, returns to the Aces for his
third consecutive season as the Strength and Conditioning
Coach. It's Schofield's sixth season with the Diamondbacks
organization, working his way up from Rookie-level Missoula in
2010.
Drabek enters his sixth year with the Diamondbacks, and his
third with Hillsboro. Last season, his championship-winning
pitching staff had the lowest ERA in the Northwest League
(3.64). He spent 13 seasons in the major leagues, mostly with the
Pirates and Astros.
The Aces open the 2015 season on April 9 at Albuquerque and
host the Isotopes on April 17 at 6:35 p.m. in the home opener at
Aces Ballpark.
Colina’s professional playing career was spent mostly in the
Rockies and White Sox organizations. He hit .271 in more than
5,000 at-bats, seeing his last action as a player in 2012. This will
be his second year in the Diamondbacks organization.
Petrick, a lifelong Hillsboro resident, returns to the Hops’
coaching staff for his third year. A second-round draft selection
of the Rockies out of Glencoe in 1995, he spent parts of five
seasons in the major leagues with the Rockies and Detroit
Tigers.
J.R. House, the Hops’ title-winning manager in 2014, has been
promoted to Visalia, the D-backs’ affiliate in the Advanced-A
California League. Hitting coach Mark Grace has been elevated
to the Diamondbacks’ big-league staff, where he will serve as an
assistant hitting instructor.
