ADOPTION CRITERIA Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded shelters may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit your home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future. She knows some basic obedience already, such as sit and down. She is house and crate-trained, but does need some work learning to walk on a leash. She is great with other dogs as long as she is properly introduced. She would do best with another young/active dog as a playmate. Sadie is around 5 years old. She already knows some basic commands like sit, down, and shake and is very food motivated! She is also crate-trained. Sadie will need to be an only dog as she is not dog friendly. It would be best if Sadie’s family had a fenced in back yard. She also would probably do better in a home with no young children because of her large size. LAURA BUENNING Where I lived growing up in rural areas of north-central United States, dogs ate table scraps, augmented by rabbits and gophers and whatever else they could snag on their own. Some got dog food too, but not all. Cats, mostly barn-cats, were expected to catch their own dinner. Some also got milk squirted straight from the cow into their mouths or in a bowl when the milking was finished, which they had to share among their barnyard buddies. It never occurred to my neighbors and family that some people food might be hazardous to their pet’s health. True, most families thought of their cats and dogs as meat eaters and bone chewers, with the occasional cooked peas, corn, broccoli, or mashed potatoes and gravy thrown in. Few would have given their pets fruit or raw vegetables. But since most pets lived outdoors and in the barn, people usually didn’t pay attention to whatever else they might get into. I don’t recall hearing about foods or substances being unsafe for pets, except perhaps antifreeze, which is sweet and attracts animals to ingest dangerously large quantities. So, when I began to adopt companion animals of my own, it was a surprise to me—and perhaps it was to you too—to learn that numerous peoplefoods and household items are toxic and could damage their health. Grapes, avocados, macadamia nuts, and—who knew—creamy, satisfying chocolate? Luckily, the Internet has lots of information about foods, plants, and household items that pose a threat to your pets. Most important of all, according to a website maintained by the ASPCA (www.aspca.org/pet-care/ animal-poison-control), “Don’t panic. Rapid response is important, but panicking can interfere with the process of helping your pet.” Of course different kinds of animals have individual sensitivities, but as a guideline here is a list of commonly named foods that may be dangerous to your pet’s health. • Caffeine—coffee grounds, beans, chocolatecovered espresso beans, and tea. • Chocolate candy—which is toxic to dogs, cats, and ferrets—and any candy or gum containing the toxic sweetener Xylitol. • Apple seeds, apricot, cherry, and peach pits contain amygdalin, a form of cyanide. Peach and apricot pits have it in potentially harmful amounts. • Avocados—birds and rodents are especially sensitive to avocado poisoning. Some ingestion may even be fatal. • Grapes and raisins toxicity is well documented in dogs; can cause kidney failure. • Garlic, onions, onion powder, and chives—cats are more susceptible but dogs are also at risk if a large enough amount is consumed; can cause gastrointestinal irritation and lead to red blood cell damage. • Hops (used in home beer brewing)—can be highly toxic to some breeds of dogs (Golden Retrievers and especially Greyhounds have been documented). • Macadamia nuts— have caused weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and elevated temperatures in dogs. • Moldy foods contain mycotoxins—dogs, cats, and even wildlife at risk. PAGE 16 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2014 • Mushrooms—while the majority of mushrooms are considered non-toxic, some may result in severe clinical signs (even death). Accurate mushroom identification can be difficult, and should be left to the experts (mycologists). • Salt—while commonly used for cooking in the kitchen, is quite poisonous to dogs and cats. Avoid heavily salted table scraps. • Alcohol—besides in beverages, alcohol can be found in foods such as rum-soaked fruitcake or unbaked yeast dough. Also, yeast dough expands in the stomach causes bloating and can lead to the more serious condition called twisted stomach. Detailed information about toxic foods, plants, and household items can be found on the following web sites.
