ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business rates are $300/150/75/35
for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and
$200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility
animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals
are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded shelters
may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that will
be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit your
home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these animals
have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to ensure
their safety and happiness in the future.

Bronson was abandoned on the side of the road
in Sevier County. He is a sweet and loving boy
who was starved, covered with fleas and sores,
and heartworm positive. He is now UTD on shots,
being treated for the heartworms and getting daily
vitamins and quality food. He will be available for
adoption as soon as he is healthy enough to be
neutered. He is a big boy and is housetrained and
crate-trained. He will benefit from some obedience
classes.

Emory Pup
Schotzie turned 1 year old
in July of 2013. She knows
some basic obedience
already, such as sit and
down. She is house and
crate-trained, but does need
some work learning to walk
on a leash. She is great
with other dogs as long as
she is properly introduced.
She would do best with
another young/active dog
as a playmate.
Sadie is around 5 years old.
She already knows some
basic commands like sit,
down, and shake and is very
food motivated! She is also
crate-trained. Sadie will need
to be an only dog as she is
not dog friendly. It would be
best if Sadie’s family had a
fenced in back yard. She also
would probably do better in a
home with no young children
because of her large size.

Sky (left), a 4 year old

years. She found it fun to
chase raccoons in the yard,
which spilled over to chasing
the cat in the house. Sky
is somewhat timid when at
adoption events but loves

What’s a bassador? Well, it’s a
mix of two great dogs, a Basset
and a Labrador. We think that’s
what Bella (left) is.
Buddy Woodstock (right)
came from a backyard breeder/
hoarding situation in Woodstock,
GA. We suspect that he never
left the trailer in which he was
born. He’s between 1 and
2 years old, and is an oddly
marked purebred. Buddy’s had
hard times and wants to be
someone’s special buddy.
She has short stocky Basset
legs and a long body, but the
head of a lab. She loves her
foster mom; the feeling is
mutual. Bella is a great cuddlle
buddy and loves going for walks.
Flash Gordon (left) is an 8
month old Boston Terrier mix.
He had a rough beginning to
his life but is fully healed now.
Flash is a very active puppy;
he gets along well with cats,
dogs, and children. He isn’t
a lap dog, unless he is really,
really tired.

Keep Your Chocolate To Yourself!
LAURA BUENNING
Where I lived growing up in rural areas of north-central United States, dogs ate table scraps, augmented by
rabbits and gophers and whatever else they could snag on their own. Some got dog food too, but not all.
Cats, mostly barn-cats, were expected to catch their own dinner. Some also got milk squirted straight from
the cow into their mouths or in a bowl when the milking was finished, which they had to share among their
barnyard buddies.
It never occurred to my neighbors and family that some people food might be hazardous to their pet’s health.
True, most families thought of their cats and dogs as meat eaters and bone chewers, with the occasional
cooked peas, corn, broccoli, or mashed potatoes and gravy thrown in. Few would have given their pets fruit
or raw vegetables. But since most pets lived outdoors and in the barn, people usually didn’t pay attention to
whatever else they might get into.
I don’t recall hearing about foods or substances being unsafe for pets, except perhaps antifreeze, which is
sweet and attracts animals to ingest dangerously large quantities. So, when I began to adopt companion
animals of my own, it was a surprise to me—and perhaps it was to you too—to learn that numerous peoplefoods and household items are toxic and could damage their health. Grapes, avocados, macadamia nuts,
and—who knew—creamy, satisfying chocolate?
Luckily, the Internet has lots of information about foods, plants, and household items that pose a threat to
your pets. Most important of all, according to a website maintained by the ASPCA (www.aspca.org/pet-care/
animal-poison-control), “Don’t panic. Rapid response is important, but panicking can interfere with the process
of helping your pet.”
Of course different kinds of animals have individual sensitivities, but as a guideline here is a list of commonly
named foods that may be dangerous to your pet’s health.
• Caffeine—coffee grounds, beans, chocolatecovered espresso beans, and tea.
• Chocolate candy—which is toxic to dogs, cats,
and ferrets—and any candy or gum containing
the toxic sweetener Xylitol.
• Apple seeds, apricot, cherry, and peach pits
contain amygdalin, a form of cyanide. Peach and
apricot pits have it in potentially harmful amounts.
• Avocados—birds and rodents are especially
sensitive to avocado poisoning. Some ingestion
may even be fatal. • Grapes and raisins toxicity is well documented in
dogs; can cause kidney failure.
• Garlic, onions, onion powder, and chives—cats
are more susceptible but dogs are also at risk if
a large enough amount is consumed; can cause
gastrointestinal irritation and lead to red blood
cell damage.
• Hops (used in home beer brewing)—can be
highly toxic to some breeds of dogs (Golden
Retrievers and especially Greyhounds have
been documented). • Macadamia nuts— have caused weakness,
depression, vomiting, tremors and elevated
temperatures in dogs.
• Moldy foods contain mycotoxins—dogs, cats,
and even wildlife at risk.
PAGE 16 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2014
• Mushrooms—while the majority of mushrooms
are considered non-toxic, some may result in
severe clinical signs (even death). Accurate
mushroom identification can be difficult, and
should be left to the experts (mycologists).
• Salt—while commonly used for cooking in the
kitchen, is quite poisonous to dogs and cats.
Avoid heavily salted table scraps.
• Alcohol—besides in beverages, alcohol can be
found in foods such as rum-soaked fruitcake
or unbaked yeast dough. Also, yeast dough
expands in the stomach causes bloating and can
lead to the more serious condition called twisted
stomach.
Detailed information about toxic foods, plants, and
household items can be found on the following web
sites.

The American College of Veterinary
Surgeons (ACVS) certifies veterinarians as
specialists in surgery. When your dog or
cat needs advanced surgery, they depend
on you to find a veterinarian with sufficient
experience and training to perform that
surgery. A Board-Certified ACVS Surgeon
provides unconditional reassurance of
advanced training and expertise. . . giving
you the confidence that your pet is in the best
hands. www.acvs.org

ETPBR dogs complete obedience, manners, and social skills training
prior to adoption.
Jedediah (left) is between
1 and 2 years old. He likes
his crate, has nice house
manners, and is great on
leash. He likes most dogs
and greets everyone. Jed’s
size and mild manner make
him great for any living
situation.
Please see our
animals on page 18!
Blossom (right) was thin and
battling skin issues when she
was rescued. She is about 7
months old. Blossem seems
to like almost anything except
perhaps the cone she wears
to keep her from bothering a
wound on her back leg where
the vet removed a small mass.
S.A.R.G., a 501(c)3 organization, was
formed in January, 1996, and is dedicated
to giving animals from the Oak Ridge
Animal Shelter a second chance at life.
