General Membership Meeting Minutes
March 21, 2017 – 6pm
The general membership meeting of the PS/IS 119 PTA was called to order at 6:10pm on
Monday, January 30, 2017. There were 14PTA members in attendance, including 3
Executive Board members: Robert Campana – President, Susan Centrone – Second
Vice President, Debra Campana – Secretary.
Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance
Approval of minutes – January and February’s minutes were approved and are now posted on
the website.
Treasurer’s Report: There is not Report due to the current Audit
We cannot have fundraisers or collect donations at this time. We hope to have audit status very
soon.
Presidents Report & Announcements:
Audit Concerns: Parents have concerns about events like graduations and field days where the
PTA provides budgeted funds for supplies, decorations and refreshments. Unfortunately our
hands are tied until the audit is concluded.
New Photographer for pictures: Irving Simon Photography. The PTA is happy with the change
because it is a larger company with a larger customer service system. The PTA will no longer be
the middle man. If you can believe it, Nicole Rini is still dealing with picture issues. Also if the
new incoming PTA would like to switch to an online platform, that would be even more
convenient for parents and the PTA. As it stands now, Next year will use the paper envelopes the
same as years prior. Irving Simon matched all packages of Class Act.
NYC Council RESO-A funding ballots- $100,000 was set aside to share among the schools with the
highest percent of returned ballots. If we are one of the school we will get one of the three things.
The 3 things may include auditorium stage repair, Auditorium curtains or an updating of the
main entrance. Ballots will be distributed by March 24th, every child will vote from ages 12 and up.
For the younger ones parents will vote. Councilperson Crowley is the first to do this.
Met’s Night, May 5th – The Mets event is still happening. The site is still being developed but once
we hear that it is ready we will promote the game. The tickets are $55 when purchased online
which includes the $12 voucher for merchandise or food. The PTA gets no money from this event.
Last year this event was very fun. If there is a better deal out there please inform the PTA for
years to come.
Box Tops – We do plan to have a spring Box Top challenge. Unfortunately we are unable to
purchase pizza for the past winners, which is in the process of being figured out. We enjoyed the
box top challenge and think the kids did too. It brought a good competitiveness among the
classrooms.
Next General Membership Meeting: April 4, 2017 at 6pm
* The meeting will include another audit update
* The formation of a nominating committee
* The formation of an auditing committee
* Rob will conduct a presentation on all the executive board positions so all is aware of the jobs
and their responsibilities.
New Business:
* Audit committee – no volunteers at the last meeting
* PTA was asking for Accountant recommendations or volunteers for the year to come.
* Rename of the school – The renaming of the school after Bernadette Boyle.
The parents were not in support of a name change. The money could go to something better.
Students of the Month Presentation
Member’s Questions or Concerns:
Several members are concerned about the audit and how it is hurting the kids. There have been
recommendations to put flowers in the front of the building. There have been concerns about the
end of the year events and the PTA’s involvement in those events. What would happen if there
was not a PTA? If there were no PTA, parents would complain about nothing getting done. All
the positions will remain open until filled. We hope people will step up to fill the positions to
help out their children’s school. A parent brought up a possible option to get more attendance at
the meetings, a Skype or have webinar meetings. That could be an option but an individual must
be present to be included in any votes. Parents have busy lives. It is understandable. The
meetings are one night a month as per the memberships vote last year. It has been decided that
as the bylaws get revised a survey will be sent out to parents to get a better time to work with
everyone. A parent was clarifying what happened, a couple parents complained an went to the
top, presidents council? The process was clarified for that parent. There was a blank line on a
financial report that was later completed after speaking to the treasurer. Years prior, the interim
financial report was never provided for the general membership to approve. In this situation the
parent did not start at the bottom of the ladder with Rob Campana, the PTA President or event
Nicole Rini the parent coordinator, they went right to the top and now our children suffer. We
hope that now, after this experience people use the ladder of referral.
Thank you for coming, meeting adjourned.
