Roots of the Antislavery
Movement
• religious beliefs led some
Americans to oppose slavery.
To many, all people were equal
in the eyes of God.
• by 1804, all states from PA
to New England had promised
to free slaves over time.
• in 1800, there were 50,000
slaves in the North; over
1,000,000 were in the South.

• One proposal was the
Colonization Movement,
which was presented by the
American Colonization
Society.
• Under this plan in 1822,
President Monroe helped the
society found the nation of
Liberia in Africa.
• some blacks favored
colonization, most did not.
Nearly all blacks in 1822 had
been born in the United
States and wanted to live in
their homeland.
• only a few thousand blacks
went to settle in Liberia.

Abolitionist Movement grows
• abolitionists wanted
to end slavery
completely in the
United States.
• there were many free
black abolitionists, such
as Samuel Cornish &
John Russwurm who set
up an abolitionist
newspaper called
Freedom's Journal.

• David Walker
encouraged
enslaved blacks to
free themselves by
any means
necessary. He wrote
a book entitled An
Appeal to the
Colored Citizens of
the World.

• The most famous black
abolitionist was Frederick
Douglass.
• as a child, he defied the slaves
codes & learned to read!
• he escaped in 1838 and went on
to talk about the sorrows of
slavery.
• He lectured extensively in
America & England.
• In 1847, he began publishing the
paper North Star.

South. Abolitionists made
enemies in both the
North and South,
however.
