Fishers of men
In the ancient world, fishing was a metaphor
for two distinct activities: judgment and teaching.
Fishing for people meant bringing them to justice
by dragging them out of their hiding places and
setting them before the judge. Fishing as teaching people
meant leading them from ignorance to wisdom.
Both cases involved a radical change of environment,
a break with a former way of life and an entrance upon
a new way of life. We are the fish dragged out of the water
in the nets to die so that God may give us a resurrection,
a new life, a new family, a new future, all under God's control,
all within the kingdom of heaven which has come near
in Jesus. We have very little control over our own lives,
but as fish caught in the net of God's love, we can trust that
we are under God's control. We have to believe that
being captured by God's love, being commanded by him
to repent, die to self and obey him, and being raised
to a new life by God, is not only right for us, but is a message
we need to share with the entire world.
Come after me
and I will make you fishers of men.

There are moments in life when something unexpected
happens which makes all the difference. It happens to us.
It happens in us. These are events which change the
course of our life, often in a radical manner. Such was
the case of the four fishermen: Simon & Andrew, James
& John, the borders of whose world coincided with the
area of the Lake of Galilee, until the day they met Jesus.
“Come after me!” said he. And immediately they
abandoned their boats, their nets, their crew, their
relatives and became his followers – the first recruits
of a peaceful army tasked to conquer the world. An
unexpected invitation, a prompt response, an immediate
departure for an unknown destination. Four hearts were
set aflame. Four lives would never be the same again.
What impelled Simon, Andrew, James & John to leave
everything behind and follow Jesus? There was his
promise, of course, that he would make them fishers of
men. An intriguing prospect, whatever those words could
mean. But what moved those four fishermen to be so
radical in their response was the fascinating personality
of the Caller: JESUS. They saw him, they hear d him,
they made up their minds. Their hearts had been
conquered by him. It was like falling in love, when
everybody else in the world seems to vanish from sight
or become unattractive, and all that remains and counts
is just “the beloved one.” Ever since the days of Jesus,
the world has become like a vast Sea of Galilee, teeming
with numberless people busy with so many things.
You and I are part of the crowd. Jesus passes by, a man
among men, but with a heart trained to love the way God
does. He may chance upon you and me and pronounce
our name the way no mere man can do, or make promises that sound like riddles. When that happens, we should
remember the four fishermen from Galilee and how
they answered Jesus’ invitation.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
Entrance Antiphon
I am sure I shall see the Lord's goodness
in the land of the living.
Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord !
R.
O sing a new song to the Lord;
Sing to the Lord all the earth. In his
presence are majesty and splendour,
strength and honour in his holy place.
A reading from the 1st letter of St Paul
A reading from the prophet Isaiah 8:23 - 9:3 to the Corinthians
1:10-13. 17
In days past the Lord humbled the land
of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
but in days to come he will confer glory
on the Way of the Sea on the far side
of Jordan, province of the nations.
I appeal to you, brothers, for the sake of
our Lord Jesus Christ, to make up
the differences between you, and instead
of disagreeing among yourselves, to be
united again in your belief and practice.
The people that walked in darkness
From what Chloe's people have been
has seen a great light;
telling me, my dear brothers, it is clear that
on those who live in a land of deep shadow there are serious differences among you.
a light has shone.
What I mean are all these slogans that
You have made their gladness greater,
you have, like: 'I am for Paul', 'I am
you have made their joy increase;
for Apollo', 'I am for Cephas', 'I am
they rejoice in your presence
for Christ'. Has Christ been parcelled out?
as men rejoice at harvest time,
Was it Paul that was crucified for you?
as men are happy
Were you baptised in the name of Paul?
when they are dividing the spoils.
For Christ did not send me to baptise,
For the yoke that was weighing on him,
but to preach the Good News, and not
the bar across his shoulders,
to preach that in the terms of philosophy
the rod of his oppressor,
in which the crucifixion of Christ cannot
these you break as on the day of Midian.
be expressed.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
26:1. 4. 13-14
R.
Acclamation:
Thanks be to God.
Mt 4:23
Alleluia, alleluia!
Jesus preached the Good News
of the kingdom
and healed all who were sick. Alleluia!
The Lord is my light
and my salvation.
The Lord is my light and my help;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
before whom shall I shrink?
The word of the Lord.
R.
There is one thing I ask of the Lord,
for this I long,
to live in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life,
to savour the sweetness of the Lord,
to behold his temple.

A reading from the holy Gospel
according to Matthew
4:12-23
Hearing that John had been arrested
Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving
Nazareth he went and settled
in Capernaum, a lakeside town
on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali.
In this way the prophecy of Isaiah was
to be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali!
Way of the sea on the far side of Jordan,
Galilee of the nations!
The people that lived in darkness
has seen a great light;
on those who dwell in the land
and shadow of death a light has dawned.
From that moment Jesus began
his preaching with the message, 'Repent,
for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand'
As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee
he saw two brothers, Simon, who
was called Peter, and his brother Andrew;
they were making a cast in the lake
with their net, for they were fishermen.
And he said to them, 'Follow me and
I will make you fishers of men.' And they
left their nets at once and followed him.
Going on from there he saw another pair
of brothers, James son of Zebedee and
his brother John; they were in their boat
with their father Zebedee, mending their
nets, and he called them. At once, leaving
the boat and their father, they followed him
He went round the whole of Galilee
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming
the Good News of the kingdom and curing
all kinds of diseases and sickness among
the people.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
