Think sales and marketing when creating your profile. If you were a potential client, what would prompt you to contact someone? If your profile is complete and optimized (for keywords), you are most likely to be found online and attract clients. Give examples of successes you’ve had in your business or career and tell stories. Let your work speak for itself. Just like in writing: show don’t tell. Use your vanity URL (name you are known by) if available in your signature, cards, etc. As an example, mine is: http://www.linkedin.com/in/joguerra. Create your profile in Word so you can run a spell check. Plus if you happen not to save it on LinkedIn by accident, you’ll still have a copy. I’ve listed parts of my profile information in black as examples. You’ll need to fill out the blank lines that are in red. When you have finished filling this out, you will have a pretty complete profile. However, LinkedIn will give you suggestions on how to get it 100% complete and how to optimize it beyond the 100%. Don’t forget to save your profile as you are editing. If you are new to LinkedIn or don’t have a complete profile, set aside a few hours to concentrate on getting it 100% complete.
