DeLaSalle Education Center was established in 1971 by a group of educators and business leaders to offer an immediate educational intervention for young people who needed another, and sometimes last, opportunity to complete their schooling. As a tuition-free, independent school, students between the ages of 14 and 20 living in the Kansas City, MO school district can enter DeLaSalle Charter High School at any time throughout the school year. There is no entrance test or other requirement except that each young person commit to a willingness to learn. 1 WHAT IS DELASALLE? DeLaSalle is an innovative high school serving urban students in need of an alternative to the traditional school. Students find success at DeLaSalle because of small class sizes and a focus on three core areas: personalized education that provides a unique learning plan designed holistic services supporting the whole child; and workforce development through experiential learning to enrich for each student; student opportunities. DeLaSalle students rely on active community support and compassionate faculty and staff to gain the skills students need to be successful. 2 PERSONALIZED EDUCATION Post-Secondary Exploration Program DeLaSalle’s individualized learning plan and approach is bolstered by several unique programs. This course requires upcoming graduates to explore post-secondary college and career options. Each senior must participate in community service, job readiness training including mock interviews, and college campus tours. Personalized Education Differentiated Instruction Teachers offer customized approaches for each course they teach so that all students receive the attention, focus and information they need to be successful and earn course credit. Pathways This program allows DeLaSalle students the opportunity to enroll in college courses at Penn Valley Community College while still enrolled in high school. Pathways allows students the experience of a college setting before actually enrolling in college to gain confidence. The more education and training they receive, the better their chances to increase lifetime earnings. Summary of Graduation Requirements The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requires each student to earn 24 credits in English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Practical Arts, Fine Arts, Physical Education/ Health, Personal Finance, and Electives to receive a high school diploma. To graduate, DeLaSalle students must also pass the United States Constitution test, and complete all aspects of the Post-Secondary Exploration class. 3 HOLISTIC SERVICES In efforts to support the whole child, DeLaSalle offers students a wide array of support services in a non-judgmental atmosphere for major life interventions. Students are not stigmatized for participating in parenting education, mental health treatment, substance abuse prevention/treatment, or violence and gang-involvement mediations. The services are provided on-site and are interwoven into their educational foundation. DeLaSalle’s holistic services include: Team of Care The Team of Care (TOC) continually develops and refines its innovative and highly individualized treatment options based on the needs of its students. TOC collaborates with partnering agencies to ensure students have school graduation. While we realize it is important to measure a student’s traditional academic performance, we also know that for DeLaSalle students, it is only a partial measure of their progress. We look at indicators that reflect growth and progress in our three key focus areas. Personalized Education 90% of students in Pathways Program received a “C” or better in their college courses at Penn Valley College for a combined GPA of 3.4 78% of 2011 graduates planned to attend two/four-year colleges. 80% increase in the number of students scoring in the basic or above range of the State of Missouri End of Course Exams. 55% showed above typical growth in language usage. 46% showed above typical growth in math. Retention and Attendance Rates Because DeLaSalle serves a special needs population while still expecting high performance and outcomes from its student body, the school applies an individualized approach to all student issues and challenges. We employ numerous intervention strategies to increase attendance as well as decrease student dimissals. Further, the school operates a Recovery Center to intervene into serious attendance and behavior problems. As a result, the retention rate has remained steady over the last four school years, and there has been an increase in the average rate of attendance. Retention is based on how many students remain, graduate or transfer successfully to another school during the current year.
