St-Boniface Hospital Foundation pledges
$2 million for dedicated cardiac CT scanner
Province of Manitoba to
match funds with additional
$2 million
Thanks to a generous $1 million donation
to St-Boniface Hospital Foundation from Russ and
Edna Edwards, an additional $1 million in community
donations, and a $2 million commitment from the
provincial government – Manitoba will soon have
a state-of-the-art dedicated cardiac computerized
tomography (CT) scanner at St-Boniface Hospital.
Manitoba Health Minister Theresa Oswald was at
St-Boniface Hospital on June 13, 2011, to personally
thank the community for its support and announce
that the Province of Manitoba would match funds
raised by St-Boniface Hospital Foundation. In addition
to its initial investment, the provincial government has
also committed to providing funding for operational
expenses associated with the dedicated cardiac
CT scanner.

“Changes in technology and new advances in
medicine mean that we must continually upgrade
equipment to ensure quality care,” says Oswald.
Once installed, St-Boniface Hospital’s dedicated
cardiac CT scanner will be the first in Manitoba
with the ability to take detailed digitized images of
blockages in coronary arteries.
“This new technology will allow cardiologists to
accommodate the increasing demand for emergency
cardiac CT scans, reduce the need for invasive catheter
coronary angiograms, and reduce the current wait
times of eight to ten months for elective catheter
angiograms,” says Dr. Alan Menkis, Medical Director of
the WRHA Cardiac Sciences Program. “Fifteen invasive
catheter angiograms are performed at St-Boniface
Hospital each day. These procedures require a
minimum of three hours to perform. A cardiac CT scan
can be done in less than one hour.”
Building a tradition
of philanthropy
When Russ and Edna Edwards got married
43 years ago, they aspired to start their own
business. Little did they know that these hopes and
dreams would spawn the industrial and agricultural
manufacturing business known today as WGI
Westman Group Inc.
Russ Edwards started the business in 1975 with only
six employees. Today, WGI Westman has 26 operating
facilities across North America, 1,400 employees and
$400 million in annual sales.
“We started with nothing. We learnt the business from
working for other people in the business,” says Russ.
“When I went out on my own I told Edna, ‘give me
five years and we’ll be worth a million,’ and I didn’t let
her down.”
Russ and
Edna
Edwards
St-Boniface Hospital Foundation began its dedicated
cardiac CT scanner fundraising campaign in 2008,
with Mr. Albert El Tassi, President, Peerless Garments,
leading the initiative.
“This announcement would not be possible had it not
been for Mr. El Tassi’s tireless campaigning, generous
commitment of both his time and personal donation
to this project, and the support of all our donors,” says
Chuck LaFlèche, President & CEO, St-Boniface Hospital
Foundation.
St-Boniface Hospital, which is home to the Winnipeg
Regional Health Authority’s Cardiac Sciences
Program, has become a centre of cardiac excellence
in Manitoba. The dedicated cardiac CT scanner has a
long list of clinical and research applications that will
further improve the cardiac services already offered at
St-Boniface Hospital.
While Russ was building WGI Westman from the ground
up, Edna was working at St-Boniface Hospital as a
nurse. Edna spent 27 years, from 1960 to 1987, working
for the Hospital in Ambulatory Care, Emergency and
Mental Health. During this time, the couple also raised
three children. Their daughter Margaret followed in
her mother’s footsteps and became a nurse. Margaret,
known as Maggie by her co-workers, spent many years
working for St-Boniface Hospital, as did her sister-in-law
Linda.
In 1986, Russ and Edna’s twin grandsons were born
prematurely at St-Boniface Hospital. The Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit staff worked tirelessly to save both
boys, but despite their best efforts, only one survived.
That same year, Russ and Edna made their first donation
to St-Boniface Hospital Foundation (SBHF). They
purchased important blood testing equipment for the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, through SBHF, to make it
easier for nurses to care for premature and sick infants
like their grandsons.
From 1988 to 2008, Russ and Edna made donations to
SBHF almost every year. They continued to reserve a
special place in their heart for the institution that had
been a workplace, health care facility and beacon of
hope and healing for their family.
In 2009, after meeting with SBHF staff and learning of the
Hospital’s need for a dedicated cardiac CT scanner, Russ
and Edna pledged $1 million to SBHF to purchase the
equipment.
“It has always been our philosophy, especially since our
company started to grow, that we should give back to
the communities that we work and do business with,”
says Russ. “We hope that we will set a good example for
other people, they will see us giving back and know that
they can do it too.”

Message from the President
I was recently watching the
classic 1982 movie “Gandhi” in
which Ben Kingsley ably portrays the
political and ideological leader of
India during the Indian independence movement and
I was reminded of one of my favourite Mahatma Gandhi
quotes: “You must be the change you wish to see in the
world.” This is a great philosophy, a great way to live
your life, and a great way to describe the people that
are highlighted in this edition of Believe.
Russ and Edna Edwards embody this philosophy.
Mr. Edwards built a significant company that currently
employs 1,400 people. Edna Edwards worked as a nurse
at St-Boniface Hospital for 27 years. After successfully
building their business and raising their family
they chose to give back to the Hospital and to their
community and they are bringing positive change
to the world.
Fateme Shams also embodies this philosophy. This
pioneering nurse came half way across the world and
embraced the compassionate care delivered by the
Grey Nuns. After 25 years as a nurse educator, through
her philanthropy, she continues to embrace and enable
that compassionate care.

Message from the Chairman
Summer is finally here, and we
can all feel the excitement in the air!
That same excitement can be felt
throughout St-Boniface Hospital Foundation.
So far this year, the Foundation has celebrated many
successes. Congratulations to Joseph Jaskiewicz,
the $75,000 grand prize winner of the 2011 Spring
Into Summer Lottery! Thank you to everyone who
purchased a ticket for the Lottery, which helped us raise
important funds for St-Boniface Hospital.
Thank you also to all who participated in the 8th annual
La Soirée chocolatée on June 9, 2011, at Théâtre Cercle
Molière. The event was a sweet success – congratulations
to the volunteer committee and Event Chair Brigitte
Léger for all their hard work. If you missed the event, turn
to page seven to read more about the evening.
Recently, St-Boniface Hospital was one of the charitable
organizations that received proceeds from the Players
Cup, hosted by Winnipeg’s own Jonathan Toews,
captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, which took place
July 11 to 17, 2011. I enjoyed watching the next crop of
PGA Tour stars golf for a good cause, and thoroughly
enjoyed participating in the Cardiac Classic Canadian
Tour Pro Am, on July 13, 2011.
On behalf of the St-Boniface Hospital Foundation Board of
Directors, many thanks to all who support the wonderful
work at St-Boniface Hospital. Through your donations,
lottery purchases, and volunteerism, you are helping make
a difference in health care in Manitoba and beyond.

Donor funded research
will change breast cancer
treatment
Research conducted BY
Dr. Davinder S. Jassal, Principal
Investigator at St-Boniface
Hospital Research, and published
in the Journal of the American
College of Cardiology, has
groundbreaking implications
for breast cancer treatment.
When used in conjunction with
chemotherapy, Herceptin is
extremely effective in reducing
mortality and the reoccurrence of
cancer in patients that are HER2
positive. In Manitoba, 800 women
are diagnosed with breast cancer
each year and 70 of those women
will be treated with Herceptin.
Herceptin has also been shown to
cause cardiac injury. In a previous
study led by Dr. Jassal, one third of
breast cancer patients treated with
Herceptin developed heart failure.
“Women with breast cancer have
been asked to potentially trade one
deadly disease for another: cancer for
heart failure,” says Dr. Jassal. “My goal
is to reduce and eliminate this risk.”
In his lab, Dr. Jassal was able to
detect subtle changes in the heart’s
pumping function in mice treated
with Herceptin on the first day of
treatment, using echocardiography
and Tissue Doppler imaging.
Between 2008 and 2010, Dr. Jassal
performed a clinical trial on 42
HER2 positive women in Manitoba,
who were being treated with
chemotherapy and Herceptin.
Dr. Jassal conducted blood
tests, Tissue Doppler imaging,
echocardiography, and cardiac MRIs
at the beginning of the study, three
months, six months and one year
after treatment had begun.
Dr. Jassal studies heart images
with a student.
As early as three months into
treatment, Tissue Doppler imaging
could detect subtle changes in
cardiac pumping function, prior to
significant damage taking place.
“We believe Dr. Jassal’s research has
the potential to revolutionize cancer
treatment worldwide by saving the
lives of breast cancer patients,” says
Dr. Grant Pierce, Executive Director
of Research at St-Boniface Hospital.
Dr. Jassal’s research study would
not have been possible without
the support of St-Boniface Hospital
Foundation’s thousands of donors,
including many monthly and annual
giving donors.
A new space for
mothers and families
On June 20, 2011, St-Boniface Hospital
opened newly renovated Mother Child Units within
its Woman and Child Program. The opening of
the new, modern facilities will be beneficial to all
mothers and their families.
The new units feature additional private rooms for
patients, which will encourage moms to keep their
babies with them in their rooms. The private space will
also allow room for a support person to stay overnight,
and encourage breastfeeding and bonding, as well as
family participation in caring for the newborn.
Patient rooms are now equipped with softer lighting,
wider doors for accessibility and larger closets. These
changes were made in order to increase patient
comfort and satisfaction, as well as ensure that mothers
get more sleep.
Thanks to a donation from Canada Safeway Limited, the
unit will also feature a newly refurbished family lounge.
“At Canada Safeway, we believe in supporting families
in the community,” says John Graham, Director of Public
A comfortable space for new moms and their families, thanks
to a donation from Canada Safeway Limited
Affairs and Government Relations, Canada Safeway
Limited. “We are proud to support the great care
patients receive at St-Boniface Hospital.”
The room was in need of new furniture for the families
and visitors who come to visit moms and their babies.
“We’re pleased to provide the Woman and Child
Program at St-Boniface Hospital with a new space for
families to bond,” says Graham. “We hope families will
continue to enjoy this space for many years to come.”

Donor embraces mission of the Grey Nuns
Fateme Shams knew from a young age that she wanted
to be a nurse. After graduating from high school, she joined the Red
Lion and Sun (Red Cross) School of Nursing in her native Iran. Fateme
became one of the first nurses in her country to graduate from this
program in 1959.
In 1970, Fateme moved to Winnipeg.
She was refused employment at
one health care institution because
of her religious beliefs, before she
interviewed for a position at StBoniface Hospital.
“During my interview at St-Boniface
Hospital, I told Sister Gauthier ‘I am
a Muslim,’” says Fateme. “I thought I
should tell her right from the start.”
Fateme remembers Sister Gauthier’s
reply and kind words fondly to
this day.
“She said, ‘my dear young lady.
In this Hospital, our philosophy
is to give holistic care. We have
Muslims, Jews, Christians and other
denominations all working here,
together.’ And that really impressed
me. I said to myself, this is where I
want to work.”
Fateme worked as a nurse
educator in St-Boniface Hospital’s
School of Nursing from 1971
until her retirement in 1996.
She truly believes that the Grey
Nuns were focused on providing
compassionate care and finding
innovative ways to treat patients
in need.
“The Grey Nuns had a great
presence within the Hospital. It was
all about patient care, as it continues
to be today.”
Fateme’s belief in the Grey Nun’s
mission of compassionate care
has led her to support programs
such as Mental Health, Emergency
and Cardiac Sciences through StBoniface Hospital Foundation. She
is proud to give back to the Hospital
that, 40 years ago, gave her so much
hope for a new life in Canada.
Creating a
lasting legacy
Susan Macdonald joined the St-Boniface
family in 1984, where she was Head of the
Physiotherapy Department and then Head of
Rehabilitation Services. She passed away suddenly
on November 26, 1995, at 37 years of age.
Susan was well respected and loved by all who knew her.
To honour her memory, Susan’s friends, colleagues and
family established the Susan Macdonald Memorial Fund,
creating a lasting legacy in her name which supports
her life’s work and passion – Rehabilitation Services at
St-Boniface Hospital.
