Sometimes the color difference between the mark and its background may be very slight: in these cases, contrast sensors with variable color LED light sources are beneficial. The color of the LED light source is important, and the appropriate choice of color for the light source, or using a unit that has variable color sources, can allow detection of very slight contrasts. For example, a green color LED light source is more likely to detect a contrast between red and blue than a contrast between green and blue. A common application for contrast sensors is a converting operation. A web of printed media may need to be cut into individual sheets, and registration marks are printed in certain locations to signal the machine controller to cut the media. For example, a continuous sheet of margarine wrappers is cut into individual wrappers with the printing centered on each individual sheet. The registration marks can be used to trigger other operations, like folding or the application of an adhesive. Contrast sensors can also be used to detect the expiration dates on containers or printed lot codes on pill bottles. They can be used to determine if certain small electrical components are facing in the correct direction by programming the contrast sensor to recognize one side of the component as the target condition and the other side (a different color) as the background condition. Contrast sensors can position bottles for label placement by detecting a mark or other label on the bottle for proper alignment. They can be used for hole detection or to detect small printing on IC chips. Laser source versions can detect small marks on shafts for speed control when it is not possible to mount a sensor close to the shaft. Detection of registration marks controls cutting of webstock. Verification of glue strip presence on carton flap. Verification of presence of foil insert in bottle caps. 642 Subjecttomodificationswithoutnotice Pepperl+FuchsGroup USA:+13304860001 www.pepperl-fuchs.com [email protected] Germany:+496217760 [email protected] CopyrightPepperl+Fuchs Singapore:+6567799091 [email protected] Photoelectric Sensors DK10 Contrast Sensors Specifications Sensing Characteristics Yes Yes Relative Sensitivity DK10-9.5/92/110 DK10-9.5/A/92/110 DK10-9.5/79b/92/110 DK10-9.5/A/79b/92/110 4-in-1* 4-in-1* 4-in-1*, and analog 0.3-10 mA (load ≤ 600 Ω) 4-in-1*, and analog 0.3-10 mA (load ≤ 600 Ω) LOAD CURRENT 200 mA max. 200 mA max. The greater the number of times that the sensitivity adjustment is turned in Step 6, the larger the contrast is. 1.Connect the supply voltage to the wires noted in the wiring diagram. 2.Set the Light on/dark on switch for Light On. Light On mode is represented by the clear circle, and Dark On mode is represented by the black circle. DK(E)20/DK34 Programming 3.Aim the light spot at the lighter color object (either the target or the background). For glossy or reflective surfaces, the sensor should be angled at 10º to 15º off the perpendicular axis from the target. If the yellow LED turns on, turn the sensitivity adjustment in the direction of “-” until the LED turns off. If the yellow LED is not on, go to the next step. 2.Aim the light spot at the target mark. For glossy or reflective surfaces, the sensor should be angled at 10º to 15º off the perpendicular axis from the target. 4.Turn the sensitivity adjustment in the direction of “+” and stop as soon as the yellow LED turns on. 5.Aim the light spot at the darker color object (opposite of the object chosen in Step 3) and confirm that the yellow LED turns off. 6.Turn the sensitivity adjustment in the direction of “+” while counting the number of turns and stop as soon as the yellow LED turns on. 7.Turn the sensitivity adjustment in the direction of “-” by half the number of turns counted in Step 6. 8.If Dark On operation is desired, change the Light on/dark on switch to Dark On. The LED should flash slowly (at a rate of approximately 1Hz). 4.Aim the light spot at the background. 5.Press the Teach push button on the sensor or apply V+ to the Teach Input for a minimum of 50ms. The LED will now turn on when the target mark is present and off when it is absent after a successful teach. If the teach was not successful or the contrast was not sufficient, the LED flashes quickly (at a rate of approximately 4Hz). Programming the DK(E)20 as indicated above sets the switching threshold exactly in the middle of the target and background values. The above procedure is for Light On mode. For Dark On mode, reverse steps 2 and 4. The yellow and green LEDs will flash alternately at 2.5Hz. The sensor’s light spot should be moved to the background at the sensing range. 1.Connect the supply voltage to the wires noted in the wiring diagram. 2.Aim the light spot at the background for Light On mode, or at the target mark for Dark On mode. For glossy or reflective surfaces, the sensor should be angled at 10º to 15º off the perpendicular axis from the target. 3.Move the potentiometer to S (Switch) position. If the teach was successful, the sensor will be ready for operation with the yellow LED indicating output status. If the teach was not successful due to insufficient contrast, the yellow and green LEDs will flash fast alternately (8Hz). 3.Press and hold the Teach push button on the sensor or apply V+ continuously to the Teach Input wire for a minimum of 50 ms. • Steps 1 and 2 can be reversed. 4.Move the target mark into the light spot for a minimum of 1ms for Light On mode, or move the background into the light spot for a minimum of 1ms for Dark On mode. 5.Release the Teach push button or remove the V+ signal to the Teach Input wire, and the programming ends 50ms afterwards. The LED will turn on when the target mark is present and off when it is absent after a successful teach. If the teach was not successful or the contrast was not sufficient, the LED flashes quickly (at a rate of approximately 4 Hz). Programming the DK(E)21 as indicated above sets the switching threshold exactly in the middle of the target and background values. • When re-teaching, it is possible to only re-teach one setting (target or background) and keep the previous teach of the other setting. Dynamic Mode By Potentiometer 1.Aim the sensor’s light spot at the background at the sensing range. 2.Move the potentiometer to TD (Teach Dynamic) position for at least 1 second. The yellow and green LEDs will flash simultaneously at 1Hz. 3.Move the sensor’s light spot onto or through the target. The potentiometer should be moved to S (Switch) position. Programming Hints • The maximum color variation from the background in Step 3 is taught as the target. DK12 Programming The DK12 can be programmed in one of two teach modes. Static Mode By External Teach Input 1.Static Mode is when the target and background are taught in two separate steps. The target and background can be programmed in either order. 1.The potentiometer should remain in the default setting of S (Switch) position. 2.Dynamic Mode is when the target and background are taught in one continuous, non-stop step. This mode allows “on-the-fly” detection of moving targets, usually for time-critical applications. Programming Hints The DK12 can be programmed by one of two teach methods. 1.The 4-position potentiometer on the housing can be used. 2.An external teach input to the sensor can enact a teach cycle. A controller can initiate a teach cycle to the sensor for a rapid and automatic change to a new contrast. Static Mode By Potentiometer 2.Apply a V+ pulse of width 220ms –250ms to the Teach Input wire. The yellow and green LEDs will flash simultaneously at 2.5Hz. The sensor’s light spot should be moved to the target at the sensing range. 3.Apply a V+ pulse of width 320ms – 350ms to the Teach Input wire. The yellow and green LEDs will flash alternately at 2.5Hz. The sensor’s light spot should be moved to the background at the sensing range. 4.Apply a V+ pulse of width 120ms – 150ms to the Teach Input wire. If the teach was successful, the sensor will be ready for operation with the yellow LED indicating output status. If the teach was not successful due to insufficient contrast, the yellow and green LEDs will flash fast alternately (8Hz). 1.Move the potentiometer to TM (Teach Mark) position for at least 1 second. The yellow and green LEDs will flash simultaneously at 2.5Hz. The sensor’s light spot should be moved to the target at the sensing range. 654 Subjecttomodificationswithoutnotice Pepperl+FuchsGroup USA:+13304860001 www.pepperl-fuchs.com [email protected] Germany:+496217760 [email protected] CopyrightPepperl+Fuchs Singapore:+6567799091 [email protected] Photoelectric Sensors Contrast Sensor Programming DK12 Programming (cont.) Other Programming Notes: When programming by potentiometer, the potentiometer can be turned in either direction and must be in each position for at least one second. The LEDs will acknowledge completion of each step as indicated in the programming information. When the potentiometer position changes, the last seen color is stored as the taught value. When a teach is successful, the DK12 automatically selects the most suitable color transmitter (either red, green, or blue) for the application. The switching threshold is set to halfway between the target color and the background color. The complementary outputs change state when the mark is detected.
