LEADERSHIP TEAM 2015 ANNOUNCED
FAREWELL TO KING’S STAFF
Four long serving and highly valued staff members
were farewelled from King’s at a special assembly on
Thursday. Judith Rosie (seated left), Garry Kyle (seated
right) and Mark Bennett (standing) have all played a
huge
role
in
educating
King’s
boys
for
many…many…..many years. Mr Wright’s role has been
more like friendly prison warden and, if you are
wondering why all staff members know when your
birthday is, you can blame Mr Wright – the birthday
board was his initiative.
THE LEADERSHIP TEAM FOR 2015 ARE (FROM LEFT)
NATHANIEL OATLEY – DEPUTY HEAD BOY
NATHAN MCDONNELL – HEAD BOY
AVANISH SHASTRI – DEPUTY HEAD BOY
JIMMY FLANNAGAN – DEPUTY HEAD BOY
SCHOOL PRIZE GIVING 2014
WHERE WILL WE BE WITHOUT THEM?
Class of 2014
Reality hit home on Tuesday night when “The Sleeves” took
the stage at Prize Giving, giving their final performance as
‘our boys’. The applause for their original song “Live it Up”
was resounding and after playing, the boys were called
onstage to receive a gift from Mr Reddiex. As a school, we’d
like to thank Jake, Tane and Damin for their contribution to;
school assemblies, Open Nights, school fairs, Sports Prize
Givings, Blues assemblies, Roadshows……the list is never
ending.
We will miss these guys a lot and will the first to jump up
and yell, “I knew them at school!!” when they walk across the
stage to receive their Tui, MTV and Grammy awards in the
future.

Year 10 Speech Competition
Our Year 10 speech competition was held at the end of last
week. With a high calibre of students speaking on a range of
topics, the scores were very close with only two points
separating 2nd and 3rd placegetters.
The standard of speechmaking is certainly improving at
King’s and we wish winner, Max Beale all the best when he
appears in the Otago Speech Competition at the PAC next
month.

Copper (3rd).
Mana Pounamu Awards Ceremony Celebrates
Success
Tame Govaerts and Paul Zinzan Smith were this year’s
winners of the Manu Pounamu Young Achievers Awards.
These awards recognise both achievement and potential and
recipients are selected by the school.
Both Tame and Zinzan possess qualities that gain them the
respect of their peers and staff alike and both are humble
achievers who set truly high expectations of themselves. ExKing’s boy James Piho, who won the award in 2002, was the
guest speaker.
Surfing
Rowing
During Labour Weekend the King's under 16 boys' eight
competed at the Cromwell to Clyde regatta.
The boys rowed well and consistently over the whole
17kms with the second half of the race being in quite
challenging conditions. They were placed 28th out of 67
teams and finished in 1 hour 17 mins.
The Kings’ Board Riders have been running their weekly
interschool ladders competition and it has been notable for
the amount of talent that is coming through. Leading the
points race is Jacob Stevenson in the seniors (in white
below) and Jack McLeod in the juniors (in orange). At least
half a dozen of our King’s boys have been ripping in the
shore-break on a day-to-day basis and it’s incredible to
watch their development.
Three of the boys were novice rowers, including cox Gray
Gibson, whose leadership was brilliant. The team consisted
of Hamish Wallace, Quinn Hawthorne, Paul Whiley, Feng
Goldsmith, Dylan Hughes, Kyle Hughes, Josh Wallace and
Campbell Booth (and Cox Gray Gibson).
Attached is a photo of the boys pulling ahead of one of the
other boats about half way through the race,
JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL REPORT
The Junior Volleyball teams had a successful weekend. The B
Team captained by Chase Iti had an excellent 2-1 win over
Taieri and the A team won a quadrangular tournament on
Saturday. Despite losing 2-1 to John McGlashan the team
beat Southland Under 15 convincingly 2 – 0 and Bayfield 2-0
to win on count back. Captain Felix Pese and also Logan
Taimalie and Matt Monga were named in a tournament
team. Other squad members included Esekia Satau, Malachi
Buschl, Will Patu, Chance Pieta and David Matenga. It is a
busy time for this group with Otago Champs next Friday and
the South Island Champs in 3 weeks. We hope they continue
to improve and achieve their goal of a top 8 placing at South
Island’s.

SUPPORT BRIGHTON SURF CLUB
The Brighton Surf Life Saving Club has made it to the finals
for the national win an IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat)
competition. As a small club, we rely heavily on these kinds
of opportunities to expand our capability to protect the
public – you and your families – from the dangers the surf
presents. With 9 in 10 of our rescues utilising the IRB, they
are a cornerstone of our rescue efforts, both in patrol and
search and rescue operations. We are also a key club in
supporting the Otago Marine Search and Rescue operations
and Helicopters Otago for our Southern Coastline including
our involvement in many rescues off the south coast such as
Taieri Mouth.
We are asking tour local community to get behind us to
support us and help us win by way of sending out the link to
their mailing lists for the next 3 weeks and voting every day
to click to vote.
EACH INDIVIDUAL CAN VOTE EVERY DAY.
It only takes 30 seconds to give us a vote at the address
below OR VIA FACEBOOK and it would be incredibly
appreciated, by the Brighton Surf Life Saving and this is a
one in a lifetime opportunity for us to have the chance to win
a $25,000 boat package from BP.
