Heartland FM The Voice of Perthshire Join the #Heartland FM Family History Heartland began broadcasting in 1989 for short periods from Mrs Honeyman’s big shed, then began live outside broadcasts from the Aberfeldy Raft race and gained a community radio license in 1992, moved into a permanent premises at Pitlochry curling rink. Initially, the output was limited to 17.00-22.00 Monday to Friday and 08.00-22.00 at the weekend. However, the hours were extended and now the station broadcasts 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Furthermore, our license is commercial as opposed to the community license. 97.5 & 106.6 fm and online In 2009 the station moved to new premises, which was financed by a LEADER grant matched by P&K. The move into Pitlochry town centre made the premises more accessible for the public and brought new enthusiasm with more presenters coming forward and a change in key personnel. At the beginning of 2011 HFM bought the license to broadcast on 106.6 in Perth from the former Perth FM. As a result we have a number of new presenters from Perth on air, strong links with the Arts in Perth, St Johnstone FC, the city music scene, as well a new audience potentially increasing our listenership eightfold. Throughout our daytime programming, we include local interviews to promote events, groups and organisations plus the free What’s On service. This is open to all community groups, non-profit organisations as well as tourist orientated operations helping to raise awareness of services and attractions. Various regular features are broadcast, including television reviews, cinema listings, local sports, health and beauty, political, theatre and nature news being a few examples. Importantly, we read out up to date travel information and school closures. We find this extremely important in the winter, with a great deal of our catchment area being rural. Our community links continue on our website and social media where we continually feature a story of local importance on our homepage. We also dedicate a space on our homepage to ‘Local band of the month’ which correlates with our involvement in Battle of the Bands- allowing Heartland to be a platform for unsigned, local talent. The web allows us to stream online giving a potential worldwide audience and provides a platform for Perthshire to showcase itself to the world through art performances and the spoken word. Future plans Future plans are to have a purpose built station with satellite studios around the county allowing those further afield to access our station, for example with live performances, more outside broadcasts, debates on local issues or live political discussion . We want Heartland to become a major voice for Perthshire across Scotland by providing training in all aspects of the media from basic music presenting to journalism, editing, producing, copy writing and engineering and using these skills to increase and improve its output as well as helping Perthshire people into a career, which may not necessarily be in radio, or simply to boost self confidence and get themselves back into a working routine.
