This Really Good Stuff® product includes: • 2 Multiplication Spinners with answer key • This Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide Meeting Common Core State Standards This Really Good Stuff® Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Set is aligned with the following Common Core State Mathematics Standards for Operations and Algebraic Thinking: 3.OA.5. Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. 3.OA.7. Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 x 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers. Assembly and Use of the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Set Before using the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Set, make copies of this Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com. Introducing the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Set Hold up one of the double Spinners to show to students. Explain that this is an activity for students to use to create and solve multiplication facts. Demonstrate how to use the Spinner by having a student come forward and spin the blue Spinner. Have the student use a dry erase marker to write the Spinner number on the classroom whiteboard, along with a multiplication sign. Then, have a second student come forward, spin the green Spinner, and use a dry erase marker to write the number on the whiteboard, along with an equal sign. Ask for a volunteer to come forward to solve the resulting multiplication problem. Show students the answer key on the back of the Spinner by holding it up and explaining that they can use it to check their work. Once you have introduced the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Set, use the Spinners for the individual, partner, small group, and whole group activities that follow. Spin-a-Fact™ Center Create a math fact center for individuals using the Spinners. Place a Spinner, copies of the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Facts Reproducible, pencils, and a copy of the appropriate Answer Key Reproducible in a zippered plastic bag at your math center. Or create at-your-seat centers, by placing a Spinner, copies of the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Facts Reproducible, pencils, and a copy of the appropriate Answer Key Reproducible in separate zippered plastic bags. Allow students to check out a bag to take to their seats. Partner Spin Off Place the Spinners in a zippered plastic bag with copies of the Spin-aFact™ Multiplication Facts Reproducible, two pencils, and a copy of the appropriate Answer Key Reproducible. Choose partners for this activity: Each student spins both the blue and green circles on his or her Spinner and writes the resulting problems on a copy of the Spina-Fact™ Multiplication Facts Reproducible. When a player has completed 10 problems, he or she is the winner. They then use either the Answer Key on the back of the Spinner or a copy of the Answer Key Reproducible to check the winner’s work. If the work is correct, the winner is declared official and the partners play another time. If the work is not correct, the second player finishes his or her 10 problems and the work is checked. Spin-a-Fact™ Math Relay Reinforce fact fluency with this whole-class activity. Divide the class into two equal teams, with one or two students held out to play the roles of Spinner and Recorder. If you have an odd number of students, you can play one of these roles so the teams are even. Place a Spinner on a table at the front of the room so all students can see it. Assign each team a space on the classroom whiteboard and give each team a dry erase whiteboard marker and eraser. Give the Recorder a marker and a copy of the Answer Key Reproducible, and have him or her write each team’s name on the board. To play, one student from each team comes up to the whiteboard with a dry erase marker. The Spinner spins both the blue and green Spinners and says the resulting problem in this format: x times x equals. Both students at the board try to write the correct answer on the board as fast as they can. The student that writes the correct answer first gets a point for their team, which the Recorder writes as a tally mark under the team name. Students erase the answer and the next pair of students comes forward to do the next problem. The first team to reach a predetermined number of points (10 or 20, depending on how long you want the activity to be), wins. For a variation, do this activity orally, with the student who calls out the correct answer to the problem first earning a point for their team. Student Take-Home Practice Spinner Make and distribute copies of the Student Take-Home Practice Spinner Reproducible. Have students color the circles different colors and cut out the spinner. Give each student two brads and two small paper clips. Have the students attach the paper clips with the brads to each circle so they spin freely. Have students take their practice spinners along with a copy of the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Facts Reproducible home for extra multiplication-facts practice. All activity guides can be found online. © 2012 Really Good Stuff® 1-800-366-1920 www.reallygoodstuff.com Made in Guangzhou, China #160562 For a multiplication activity, individual students spin both the blue and green Spinners, write the resulting multiplication problem on the Spin-a-Fact™ Multiplication Facts Reproducible, and solve the problem. They spin to create, record, and solve up to 20 problems. Once they solve the problems, they use a copy of the Answer Key Reproducible or the Answer Key on the back of the Spinner to check their work.
